Sony HPA-1 / HPA-2
« on: September 09, 2013, 12:34:57 AM »

Is the TI based chip amp in the Sony HPA-1 / HPA-2 any good? I have interest in the HPA-1/HPA-2, but I've heard that TI chip before, probably in less than ideal implementations, and I did not like it at all.

I wish Sony would make the HPA-X with their own S-master stuff. Damn Sony. That's just like them.

You mean the PHA-1? I can send mine your way if you're interested.

I was just wondering the same thing when I saw it on the For Sale section here somewhere.
but 10 O output impedance sounds a bit much maybe for IEMs which I would be using it for.

10 ohms actually works well with UERM for me. UERM has a tendency of sounding a bit too dry. 50 ohms not so much.

hmm right. mine are 17 Ohm (RE-600) and are already not very dry. didn't sound all that good with the V-Moda DAC/amp combination, I thought. I believe it has a bit higher Output Impedance as well.

PHA1 sounded terribly slow to me, but so did the ALO MK3B. I wasn't particularly interested after that.

Didn't test the DAC portion though.

From a technology standpoint, if we're talking about the TPA6120, the built-in buck-boost converter which makes the negative rail isn't as well matched to the positive rail as it should be. It runs out of juice a bit early and it's a bit noisier.

I do wonder what this would sound like if we did some hack-a-mod on it and bypassed the 10 Ohm output resistors with some bad-A transformer. Look... drawbacks all around, but I do wonder if it'd actually be cool. We use transformers all the time in live sound, so why not here?
