AKG K712 Pro... needs a mod?
« on: August 23, 2013, 01:55:22 PM »

So AKG made some updates with the K712 Pro that have me interested but I think it'll need something akin to a Rabid Dawg mod based on the newly posted charts at Headroom compared to the HD800.

Try Headroom's raw charts (change the number one down in their chart-o-matic url). You'll see the difference immediately.
Headroom uses way too much smoothing.

No hyperlink, as the forum fails to properly parse it. You'll have to copy and paste that.

As you can see, there is a highest end dip and a 2.5k blip that's likely resonance, which would manifest in a bit of shout. They don't do CSDs, pity.

Thanks for sharing the raw chart. It looks to me like I'll want to look into three areas of improvement for my tastes. 1) something to tame the sub-1kHz bloat, and 2) something to tame the 6kHz peak, and 3) subtle improvements between 1-4kHz. That last one isn't so critical, though.

AKG can never seem to get rid of that 2khz lump in their headphones.

How could they? It's the same driver being reused over and over again it seems.

Well, the K240s, K340 and K400 here all have that "AKG love bump" (I think I've read this somewhere) between 2k and 3k.
Seems all their full sized open cans have this? I'd say it's sadly part of their target curve, so it's there by design...

Oh well, maybe Sean Olive can persuade them to change it.

That was the worst part about the K702 AE. It was hard on my ears. You can definitely tune it down with damping mods in front of or behind the driver. It's just hard finding a mod that doesn't have too many trade offs.

At least they've removed the headband bumps. Those were the bane of my existence until I sold the AKG K702s.

I've spared myself from bumpy headbands thus far so my noggin' is quite comfortable. Funny that some are having trouble with the 2kHz-ish bump 'cause I don't. Yeah, I wanna tame it but it doesn't bug me. My K171's don't have that so when I first heard phones with it (yeah... Grado SR225i) I was hearing all sorts of new stuff in the music as a messed up FR has a way of doing. So I discovered the primary anomaly at 2kHz and bumped my EQ on my AKG's and suddenly I heard the same stuff. There was, of course, one huge difference between the phones. When the babe I was listening to on the Grado's s-s-started s-s-singing, the s-s-sibilance felt like a cat clawing on my eardrums :-0. I thought Grado's were supposed to be good... but my ears knew better.

So... I never had an issue with the 2kHz bump as others have had, but in studying the issue of FR with a parametric EQ I've discovered that the 5-7kHz region bugs me most if it's out of whack in there.

OK... so the 2kHz bump is an issue for a bunch of people. It needs an anti-resonant ring of a tad over 3" (just under 80mm). I'll have to noodle on that a bit for the better of mankind.

On second thought, the can ain't worth it. Too much bloat on the low end. How does a headphone have bloated richness while maintaining good control? Beats me, but I'm not investing in these cans. I might step it down a notch and get the K612 if I feel like it.
