I mentioned a few things in the chatbox while on semi-vacation. Will make this short:

While Dolby Atmos is capable, Monsters University simply did not take enough advantage of it. There were just too few scenes, as the movie was storyboarded / directed, which required use of precise positional audio cues, particularly form the sides or the back. 99% of the action in the movie was in front of the viewer / camera, so all the fancy Dolby stuff would have been highly inappropriate if it had been used.

I suspect this is not too different from Brave, which supposedly was 90% 7.1 and 10% Atmos. It comes down to how hard they want to work on the Atmos audio stream.  Perhaps Man of Steel (with action all over the place around the viewer) would have been a better movie for Atmos.

That being said, the two or three scenes in the movie which made good use of Atmos were kind of neat, .e.g. the frisbee being thrown from the center of the screen over our heads on the left side, the monsters in the "coliseum" scene, etc.

In the end, the Atmos thing was a slight disappointment. However, the El Capitan theatre and the overall experience was not and well worth the $26 VIP ticket (included 3D, pop-corn, drink, performance from a really good organist, live Disney cheerleader squad, cute animated short, and just being able to see the art deco theatre)

I did the Dolby Atmos thing with The Hobbit, and like you I sorta forgot it was there after the first 10 minutes. There were a small handful of scenes where it was noticeable (eg. scene where there are steps heard from the ceiling, or the scenes where you can hear the rain from the ceiling), but generally it wasn't worth the price premium (for now). It's up to directors/studios to be willing to incorporate the technology into their movies. I don't think "Atmos" will sell movies like "3D" does.

But yeah, hopefully we see it incorporated more in the future. It IS cool when done right. The Atmos demo at the beginning of the movie was awesome.

Found the word I was looking for: afterthought

For all the Atmos movies out, the Atmos thing has seemed to be an afterthought. I'm sure one day, there will be a movie which makes full use of it. I think the engineers at Dolby sort of said, look here, see what we did. Now we need the movie / sound guys to take advantage of it.

I still remember Top Gun in Dolby Surround at the excellent Town and Country Theater (since demolished and reconstructed into Santana Row) in San Jose. Or maybe it was Century 21/22 (still one of the best screens in the country.)

We really enjoyed the whole experience and IMO it was well worth the $26.

The coliseum scene was fantastic! I also thought that Dean Hardscrabble's dramatic entrance to the classroom was awesome. Hopefully Atmos (and similar) will be more thoroughly incorporated into film.

This was my daughter's first ever movie theater experience and it was really nice to see her go through her popcorn and enjoy the show. We all had an incredible time. The movie theater is beautiful, and loved what they did with the lights and the stage curtains (multiple layers). It's an historical move theater fully renovated. We got to experience the surprising confetti rain :)p1 An incredibly beautiful movie theater and fantastic show!
