Top Five of 2013, So Far
« on: July 08, 2013, 12:44:58 AM »

Since we're at midyear, let's share our thoughts about the best new records of the first half of the year.

To keep it manageable, let's limit it to the top five.

Here's my list, in no particular order.

Dawes, Stories Don't End
Jason Isbell, Southeastern
Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Vladimir Petrenko cond., Shostakovich Symphony No. 7 ("Leningrad")
Miles Davis, Bootleg Series vol. 2: Live in Europe 1969
Pat Metheny, Tap: John Zorn's Book of Angels vol. 20

Not sure if I've heard anything from the 2013, save for the Stonerobixx compilations.

Been kind of a slow first half I think. But so far, I'd have to give it to:

Steven Wilson - The Raven that Refused to Sing

Deafheaven - Sunbather

Kvelertak - Meir

Atoms for Peace - Amok

Tera Melos - X'ed Out

Haven't been following or buying too many this year, but my favourite this year has to be Trouble Will Find Me - The National

This year in music has been pretty good so far, with a lot of well established artists releasing new material: Low, Yo La Tengo, Daft Punk, The National, Queens of the Stoneage, Black Sabbath, Flaming Lips, etc. In particular there have been some big finally-seeing-the-light-of-day surprises like the new Boards of Canada and My Bloody Valentine. Speaking of MBV, it's really been a good year for shoegaze in general with the Yellow Loveless compilation tribute and a new release from Medicine in the coming months.

Can't really come up with a top five, but here are some other highlights for me so far, with my favorites in bold:

Aidan Baker - Already Drowning
Altar of Plagues - Teethed Glory & Injury
Arsis - Unwelcome
Autechre - Exai
Autopsy - The Headless Ritual
Autre Ne Veut - Anxiety
B/B/S/ - Brick Mask
Beach Fossils - Clash the Truth
Black Boned Angel - The End
Bona Dish - The Zaragoza Tapes

Ducktails - The Flower Line
Dungeonesse - S/T
Endless Boogie - Long Island
Ensemble Pearl - S/T

Quite a few metal fans here I see. I'm still waiting for a true knockout this year that's as good as Bilocate's album from last year. Here's what I've been enjoying so far though.

CD sound is still trash with some rare exceptions, but luckily there's been lots of good vinyl this year.

Steven Wilson - The Raven that Refused to Sing

Fantastic album! Blew me away. Something to keep me occupied while I wait for the next Opeth album...

New Daft Punk album is pretty sweet as well.

I don't listen to enough music, so I guess those are my top 2. I tend to gravitate towards bands I'm familiar with...I seem to be very picky about music I can really, really get into.
