BNC Connections
« on: July 05, 2013, 04:17:51 PM »

I can understand why it is that many purists are all about BNC on their USB to SPDIF converters due to the fact that RCA and true 75ohm are difficult. However, I find that at the end of the day I have yet to own a DAC that has a BNC input.  So what is the point of insisting on BNC if most DACs don't even have BNC input?  Are these chaps just converting BNC to RCA on the DAC end?  Am I just not 1337 enough?

It's rarer therefore it's better.

Come on, true 75ohm BNC is not snake oil.  Unless you feel all digital (USB/I2S/Coax/Toslink) sounds then same then you're likely think all DACs sound the same too.  Most DAC manus don't use it because it's more expensive and most of their consumers don't have BNC cables.  So why would you restrict your client base and increase your costs at the same time?  More like it's cheaper and increases profits so it's better.  $$$$

I'm pretty sure the Statement DAC will include BNC last I heard.  It was something I asked Jason about a few years ago.

BNC makes more sense for converters since you are already dropping a decent chunk of change for a little box that often costs as much as an entire DAC.  If you are going to be that anal about digital conversion and then skimp on BNC, your product is somewhat stupid.

If you want accurate impedance and timing you want BNC. Take a look at any pro DAC or high-end consumer DAC that has a word clock in/out. Those are always BNC, never RCA. It's just better. In any case, it's not exactly like it's a big deal. Any converter with a single BNC output can easily be converted to RCA with a simple, $2 adapter, no harm done, and the more expensive the DAC, the more likely there is to be at least one BNC input alongside RCA.

I don't think my DAC is 1337 enough. :'(

DaveBSC: You mean in unbalanced applications.

XLR is almost always superior, both digital and analog and has to provide balanced signal, making impedance irrelevant most of the time.
For analog audio, the terminating impedance is only a nuisance and waste of power. Extra shielding is also welcome.

The only issue is that it's larger and not directly attachable to scopes and other measurement hardware.

There's some debate about that, actually. Analog yes, provided it's not phony balanced via a phase splitter or something similar. AES/EBU vs. 75 Ohm BNC is less clear cut. I've heard arguments for both. Steve from Empirical has said that he thinks BNC beats AES, at least for the Off-ramp. Both it and the Alpha USB have both kinds of outputs, so it's an easy enough thing to listen to for yourself.
