Sony Walkman Sports MP3 Player Review - Get your swim on!
« on: June 27, 2013, 10:35:51 AM »

The oldest cliche' in audio review might be "Even my stone eared wife could hear how good it was!"  In this case you'll have to take her word directly!

My wife has been swimming a lot more and she mentioned she wished she could listen to music when doing laps.  Oh snap!  I'll jump all over any chance to shop for any headphones like a pack of dogs on a three legged cat.  That said, I knew nothing about headphones you could swim with and was sure they'd sound like crap.

Enter the Sony Sony Walkman Sports MP3 Player.

I told her that eventually I'd like to listen to them and do a quick post. She beat me to it with her first and only headphone review, and some jabs at me, which follows unedited.

After a very unsuccessful first swim using the Sony Waterproof Sports MP3 player I felt  discouraged and a little cheated. "It was too good to be true", I thought,...the ability to swim and listen to my music.  I was unable to keep it sealed while I swam despite the recommendation to fix it in place by tucking it under my goggle strap. Once the seal was lost and water filtered in, the sound quality was terrible as you can imagine. BUT "try, try again" as they say and I'm happy I did.

After my first attempt I learned what NOT to do, for myself anyway. I made some minor adjustments and voila,...success! The sound quality was well over what I expected. I would have to say it was very good. In my novice opinion it was clear, had a good a sense of depth, and it was sturdy, which of course all depends on a good seal. I feel it was money well spent.

All in all I do recommend the Sony Walkman Sports MP3 Player. It is a good quality waterproof MP3 player that fills the needs of music listening, swimming enthusiasts such as myself. Plus it got the approval of my geeky head phone enthusiast husband which is by far the best recommendation I could have received. :)

Cheers!
Rayegon

I think she's got it covered! There is no need for me to add anything except a few little things that I noticed;
- Synching can be a little quirky, but the process is simple enough.
- There are no visual indicators except a single LED, so learning the controls is a bit of a PITA.  And the buttons are tiny.
- It only takes 3 minutes of charging to get 60 minutes of play time!  Cool.

If you swim and want to add some tunes to your workout, you might give these things a try. Just be patient while you get the seal right... it'll be worth it.

Am I right to say that it's integrated into some IEMs?

Yessir. Two sort of large pods with the player built in connected by a strap that goes behind the head.  The nozzles insert into the ear like pretty standard IEM's.  We were able to get a fit on my giant sound holes and my wife's cute and tiny ears.

Interesting combination, swimming and music.  Unfortunately, I don't swim enough to get the most out of this novelty IEM.   :)p18

Although they market it as a "sport" IEM that can be used when you are sweating, in the rain, etc... I would say there are far better options to consider if you're not taking the plunge.  walk the plank2

Have you or your wife tried jogging with the IEMs on? How well do the IEMs stay in place?

I do a good amount of running and swimming in the summer, so if these are suited for both they'd be an intriguing purchase for me.

Thanks!

Swimming has been part of her rehab from knee reconstruction surgery, so she hasn't been doing any running.  I'll ask her how she things they would do!
