Koss's new headphones: SP540 (Updated 11/1/2014)
« on: October 29, 2014, 01:20:28 AM »

So, it arrived today.

This headphone is a good example of 'terrible in picture, awesome in real life'. Very well-finished. Simple yet luxurious feeling.

Very interesting. I understand Tyll's comment on 'thick' sound. The catch is while it is indeed a bit thick sounding, yet it is crystal clear to my ears. No muddy sounding like most of typical <$200 headphones.... but have to hear more.

Overall warm headphones, but somehow high goes very high.

Very comfortable headphones with little pressure. Right now I am out of the home so I can't make detailed comparison right now.

*Update: It's been 5 days I've been using headphones, feeling more than enough to make judgement. Here is a short review.

1. Possible dealbreaker :

1) The most serious concern is that the headphone's headband is small and limited. See the picture below. All three headphones' headbands have been extended to max.

For reference, I have to extend the Audeze headband almost all the way down (both sides) to fit. There are probably people who have bigger head than me... the headphone might not fit at all.

Fortunately, the cup itself is big enough to cover the whole ears. It has definitely more room than VISO HP50 (yes, despite HP50 looks bigger) and Sennheiser momentum.

2. Ugly points :

1.) Mid-bass to low-mid emphasis is evident, and it might bother some people who do not like such sound signature.

2.) Rather poor range of accessories. It comes with just a headphone, a short cable, and hard-shell case. No adapter, no in-line mic, no spare cable, etc. Saving grace is that I like hard-shell case more than just a bag that most of headphones come with these days.

3. Good points :

1.) That mid-emphasis is very gentle, does not ruin other frequencies much, and is helpful to somewhat defeat the outside noise. Probably due to this and general warm-sounding, this headphone is completely fatigue free for me.

2.) Earpads are very comfortable memory foam with pleather. I might liked more if the pads were fabric or velour, but I still like them.

3.) The headphones isolate well (average) and do not leak sound as well.

4.) While it may be too small, the headphones are very small, compact and very easy to carry. It is foldable.

4. Very good points

1.) Sound. Very good, very clean to my ears. While it is warm, it does not necessary hide details.

2.) While high is not as strong as bass, it is very extended fully-realized.

3.) Extremely lightweight with appropriate clamping force.

4.) Build quality is superb and flawless. The plastic is rubber-coated, hinges and cup surfaces are made of metal.

Overall, the sound shape is very lean, generous U shape. I definitely think it is better than M50, and surely a lot better than momentum.

Also being lightweight is a big factor- I used several studio-DJ headphones (SRH840, M50) and what I found was that they were way too heavy to use when moving around (walking, taking subway, etc).

I am not sure whether I write a full review on Head-Fi, but this is definitely very good headphone, deserving some attention and love.

I'll probably be measuring them tomorrow.

But just measured the little brother SP330 and it was respectably good. They sound pretty good to, a tad shrill but pretty good at the price.

Holy crap that's fast. >.>

So far I like them a lot. Maybe more than VISO HP50, but I have to do proper comparison at my home.

Koss has been pretty quick about giving me stuff...I think they really want a good review.

I talked to a Milwaukee journalist a few days ago, he wanted to interview me about putting Koss in context with the rest of the market. He's followed Koss through their troubles with the lady who embezzled some ridiculous amount of money from them a few years ago. And then last year where the rolled the dice with an expensive wireless streaming solution (for a problem no one had, evidently) with a product dev company that kinda screwed the pooch.  He was of the impression that they're breathing their last breath, and if they don't come out with a hit they're gonna be toast. Sad.

I think the 330 and 540 (listened quite a bit last night) are a bit rough around the edges but fundamentally a decent value.  I'd like to see the prices come down $20-$30 and they'd be a pretty darned good buy.

As a side note they also sent me a Pro4AA...gawd, what a horrible sounding piece of uncomfortable shit. Like strapping a brick to your head. If anyone has a Pro4AA from the '70's in decent shape I'd love to measure it. Bet it's WAY better than the current version.

Anywho, now's a good time to tell people the Porta Pro is still awesome, and get your ears on these new ones to see if they cut the mustard. I'd hate to see Koss disappear.

Oh, that isn't great news. There aren't many companies making a good value headphones.

I also listened to SP540 for entire night, and I believe it's very, very good headphones except rather boomy mid bass. I'd say they are definitely worth for what's asking.

No, do not bother old full-size Koss stuffs. They are all bad except now-impossible-to-make A series. Don't bother with older ones either since they use identical stuffs and sound bad as well.

That said, very first real headphones for me was Koss Pro4AAT before Sennheiser HD590.... I still have fond memories.

Story to keep private - Koss at one time had some pretty grand ideas to get back in the game.  Before the scandal, they were putting serious money into a pretty grand idea - a series of binaural albums produced to show what headphones could do.  They would then set up "Koss booths" around the country, airports/malls etc, with their headphones and a variety of specially produced and recorded binaural fare.  Whole thing fell out from under them when that scandal hit.

This is by no means Kossters last stand but they need to regain some cool if they want any market share in the luxury/audiophile markets.

If I were Koss, I'd consider doing a "Lexus" brand of upper echelon stuff, premium materials and build with some upper midrange (at least) competitive sound.  They think their brand name is going to cut it but most users just say "Koss? Ugh."  Do some demographic testing, appeal to the right crowd with a snooty upper class line or a hip hop oriented line or whatever, and get in the game.

Nah, I think they should stick to what they do best: good cheap headphones.

The $100 mark is a sweet spot that no one is fighting over. The big fight is at $200-$400.

If Koss could do $100 headphones really well, and I think they could, they might be able to win over a fucking big market.

There are other good headphones in $100 market though. There are many options represented on picking 7 headphones thread here.

Sorry to derail this thread further into a general Koss thread, but they should just permanently lower the price of the ESP950 to $699 or lower. For that price, I think they're very competitive. Maybe the channel imbalance and squeal issues would kill any profits with warranty repairs or maybe their margins would be too low.
