I got a new pair of hd800s today (35000 serial number) Compared to my old hd800s (10000 sn) Upon opening the box I immediately realized that metal mesh on the outside is different. It is now shiny and slippery compared to dull and rough of the old hd800s. Kinda like the opposite sides of tinfoil if you will.
Okay here it comes... My first subjective impressions are that these new ones sound.......smoother up top (less shouty) have a touch more bass thump (maybe a 2-3db). Flame sheild on, no way can I guarantee this, nor do I know how/can take measurements, just my subjective impressions. Not trying to make a hype thread, just generally curious. Does anyone else have these new production ones?
I know they recently changed the hd650 driver and although I havn't listend to them in a long time, they definitely sound less muffled then I remember. Seems like senn is up to some sneaky stuff?

Oh but you can!, you know where to send them ;)

Just do a fuckin' search here and there and You'll see that HD800 sound and measure almost the same . There's no "New" HD800 or revised one , or mk2,3 or anything hidden. :spank:
Anax and Marv took time to open a dedicated thread to talk about that.

Ok - 2-3dB would be measured eeeeasily. Second, maybe your earlier 800s are just old so they aren't shiny? Luster wore off?

No comment on the 800's personally, but the 650's were changed sometime around 2007. Coming up on 8+ years, not really a recent change.

If there really is an audible difference my money would be on the pads being worn out on the older pair.
-
pad material changing over time, nothing to see here. Move on.

+1 on pads. I replaced the pads on my SN 500 pair and it did the same thing.
-
warmer sound is usually due to older pads, not the other way around. The construction may be different, who knows. Pics please

As usual, the devil is in the details. Worn pads compress yes, but these have a sueded texture that will promote loss of seal as it wears off.
