Title: Beyerdynamic T5P
Post by: Bill-p on April 07, 2015, 03:56:30 AM
Whoopey!

I got this on loan from a friend. Will attempt to either sell it off, or mod it to some degree for him.

Actually... doesn't measure that badly. Some moderate ringing across... the whole band, but otherwise kinda mildly annoying rather than bright, trebly, and supremely piercing. Overall, not too bad, but it definitely ain't worth what my friend would like to ask for IMO.

Also to note, this is probably the best Tesla Beyer I have ever heard... doing nothing supremely wrong, and sounding kinda decent. But still... not worth the moneh!  facepalm

Will attempt to open it up carefully and see if I can make it worth the cash.

In the right cup it looks like some repeater at 4.5/6/7.5 (ish), and maybe 3 and 1.5?

But then you don't have that in the left...

Yeah... it looks really weird.

Decay at around 1KHz indicates this is a fast driver. Probably faster than Beyer's old DT line.

Too bad it rings like crazy at higher frequencies. I'll see if I can get the driver suspended in the air with the mic close by to see how free-air measurements would look like. I suspect most of the resonance will be gone. This funky decay pattern is due to the angled drivers, me think. The DT line never had angled drivers, so they always had a symmetrical decay pattern in the back, which was accounted for in the engineering process -> almost no resonance or ringing although the back is pretty much empty. I know this from experience dealing with the DT770, which has an almost empty ear cup, but it has no ringing at all.

I wonder if maybe only two ridges are from resonances/decay due to geometry, and the others due to IMD (tomayto tomahto).

The DT770 has that felt ring around the driver though doesn't it? Does it have any ringing without it?
