So far I've listened to The Blacker the Berry, and the Flying Lotus collaboration. Loved what I heard so far.
The youtube reviewer the Needledrop gave it a 10/10 and that's a pretty rare rating for him.
So, I'll be giving it a close listen over the course of the next few days.
I'm curious what you guys thought of this album.
Did you love it? Did you hate it?

I just can't get into him. I thought good kid, M.A.A.D city was a very well-put-together, cohesive album but it failed to excite me in amy way. Maybe because I've heard plenty of growing up in the 'hood stories before. His new album is also well constructed. It feels like an album rather than a collection of singles. I just don't connect with his lyrics in any way. The beats were OK, good kid may have been a little better in that respect. I'm just bored of music these days, so take what I've said with a pinch of salt. It's been very difficult for me to get into anything new.

I've only heard snippets at this point. Liked it so far. Going to try to sit down and listen to the whole thing maybe tonight.

Meh, I listened to it twice.
It's not as accessible as the mAAD city album, and frankly I'm not that interested in listening to Pimp a Butterfly.
It seems that all the reviews are fooled by use of Native Instrument's Massive as a bass sound + vocals + string section orchestration (violins, cellos)
A lot of music that has those elements easily wins the critic's hearts and is often considered for a Grammy.
What a transparent formula.
Instead I'm currently listening to Illmaculate - Clay Pigeons.

A good number of songs there sound like I was hoping To Pimp a Butterfly would sound.
Liking "Take a Hit, Know My Name, Tread Lightly, Green Grass"
It's a nice 15 minutes of solid listening back to back on the LP. The next two songs after that are pretty good too, so maybe 15-20 minutes of listening.
Oh well. Maybe Kendrick's next LP will return to some of the more accessible themes like Good Kid mAAd City.

I can name the ones I'm aware of on one hand.
JJ DOOM - Key to the Kuffs (new MF Doom collab, a couple good tracks)
Wu-Tang Clan - A Better Tomorrow (a couple good tracks on there too)
Blue Scholars - Cinemetropolis
CunninLynguists - Oneirology, Cunninlynguists - Strange Journey Vol. 3 (haven't heard these two yet, but I'm sure they are decent)

I couldn't get through the whole thing, I got about halfway through and that was really all I could handle. Critics have their place but rap music isn't exactly their forte. GKMC wasn't my cup of tea either as he lyrically regressed from section 80. Joey Badass album was immediately listenable from the get go and I also like the new Lupe and Ghost albums.

Yes Ghostface Killah, thought that was obvious my apologies. He had "12 reasons to die" which was a good concept album and his newest one "36 seasons" with lots of AZ and Kool G Rap guest spots which are always a treat. In the past few years the Run The Jewels albums (both of them) are amazing, Mayhem Lauren's Silk Pyramids, Apollo Brown and OC's Trophies is incredible, and of course an unsung classic is Gas Mask by The Left. And that's just a few that I highly encourage checking out. Hard to listen to anything Kendrick after those tbh

Depending on the kind of hip-hop you prefer, Tech N9ne has done some decent stuff in the past 5 years. "Something Else" isn't one of the "best hip-hop albums of all time" by any means, but it's pretty solid. And "Special Effects" is coming out in about a month.
Talib Kweli has also been pretty interesting recently. "Gutter Rainbows" (2011) is one of his best albums, in my opinion, with the exceptions of Reflection Eternal's "Train of Thought" and his first solo album, "Quality".
The above suggestions, especially Run the Jewels, are also pretty good. Hip-hop isn't in another golden age yet, but it's not dead, either.

This album is bananas. I think the first half of it is much stronger than the second. "u" is killing me right now.

I don't really have a particular kind of hip hop that I enjoy, as I think there is good and bad in every style, but some of the more interesting stuff that I have heard:

Chance the Rapper's Acid Rap, Bus Driver's Perfect Hair, MF Doom's Born Like This (really underrated to me), Death Grips The Money Store, Billy Woods' Dour Candy, Lil Ugly Mane's The Weeping Worm etc.
I think there is a lot of variety in Hip hop right now which to me is a good thing. But it doesn't have the cohesion of one movement with a ton of good stuff in one style IMO. I like the variety, but that's just me.

King Kunta is the hottest hip hop track of the year. I literally have a hard time breathing every time I listen to it. Just mesmerizing.
I'll be seeing Kendrick and Run The Jewels at bonnaroo this summer. I think we are in a great time for hip hop right now.

When the female singer comes in on King Kunta is just magic. I tend to agree that hip hop is in a good space right now. There is something for everyone, and I think that's great.

Wow a hip hop thread. Sub. I have heard of Kendrick but only from the album good,kid m.A.A.D. city. Can't say much for the pimp a butterfly album as I didn't like it very much.
I'm more of the 90's hip hop like Outkast ATliens, Refugees, Busta Rymes, Method man, Red man, Tupac, Notorious Big, Mob deep, A tribe called quest, etc...

I don't even like hip-hop, but it really is fantastic. GKMC is more consistent, but at the expense of being far more safe and less interesting. There's also nothing on TPAB quite on-par with "Sing About Me," but the album as a whole is easily the best hip-hop album in recent years, and one of the best I've ever heard.

Heard Kendrick Lamar on A$AP Rocky's "LONG.LIVE.A$AP" album, track: F**kin' Problems
Liked him and wanted to hear more...but didn't immediately get into this album, so went to his earlier albums. I'll check back in after working through his albums and this one some more.[size=78%] [/size]

I'd vote Drake - 10 Bands as track of the year.
My criteria is how many people have been sampling that beat and that chorus in hip hop cyphers.
So far Jaz the Rapper, Serious Jones I've heard sampling that.
