Title: Vodka Thread
Post by: Claritas on August 02, 2015, 09:22:05 AM
I used to drink scotch a couple of times a week throughout the early and mid-2000s, most often Laphroaig 15. By 2007, I was drinking more vodka neat than whisky.

I tend to prefer potato to grain and I'm very taken with Boyd & Blair. It's oily and a little sweet: "tubes done wrong" = vodka done right?

My idea of a good time is Vikingfjord, it's smooth so works well for mixing too. I gave my friend a drink at a party 50/50 vikingfjord & lemonade snapple. He thought I didn't put any alcohol in it. He had a bottle of Absolut Vodka and the next drink I used his bottle. Immediately he reacted that it was too strong. Absolut Vodka is the 2nd most selling vodka in the world and it's probably on the top 2 shittiest vodkas in the world.

I prefer Absolute to a lot of  Smirnoff-kind oversmoothed vodka. The worst vodka for me was Namiroff. Undrinkable.

I am currently working on a bottle of Death's Door. It is worth checking out.

Sobieski.

It's dirt cheap and I actually prefer it a lot of more expensive vodkas.  It could stand to be a little smoother but its flavor is great.

Russian Standard is very good. I often go for Stoli for that ol' soviet charm. Still, nothing beats the Poles (Krolewska, to add to the list).

As for notably overhyped vodkas, Grey Goose holds a very special role in defining overpriced mediocrity.

Ah, the Objective 2 of vodkas.  ;)

I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to vodka but Anetode took me to a great little place when I was in town where they made their own vodkas:

The horseradish vodka was excellent!

It used to be one of my favorites before I discovered potatoes in 2010. Ten years ago, it was very obviously more refined than its competitors and you pay a premium for that. But it started slipping in quality, becoming harsher and less subtle. Same thing happened to Ketel One long before that, except it became ever more watery.

I picked up Vikingfjord and Monopolowa today and just had a quick taste so this is only a first impression:

Vikingfjord doesn't offend much. It keeps things pretty simple without being too bland, but there's a just a little too much bite to drink it neat. I expect it to be quite nice chilled however. It lacks oiliness relative to most potatoes: a potato trying to be a wheat?

Monopolowa is moderately oily, less so than B&B. It's quite smooth but fairly sweet and fruity, more than Tito's (which I dislike for that reason) but the oil restores some balance. I kind of enjoyed adding it to B&B in 1:3 to add a touch of smoothness. Vodka modding! :)p5

Karlsson's Gold passes the test: you can easily drink it neat. It aims for the middle in body and taste, so it's a little characterless for its price. But I'm very pleasantly surprised that the owner of Absolut made such a competent product.

I think if you are mixing man Kirkland (not the US stuff but the imported stuff from France) is great.

My drink of choice during the winter being Vodka rocks I enjoy drinking Goose or Russian Standard.
