Title: *temporary* questions regarding headphone from Incase + FR graph
Post by: Cristello on December 04, 2012, 03:05:49 AM
so, I happened to overhear these being casually recommended between strangers at a local watering-hole, and I was curious since I had only known Incase from their nicely designed (if expensive) iPhone cases, etc...

I was impressed with both the simplistic design and overall potential for durability and comfort that goes along with it:

Of course, I remain highly skeptical that the sound is anything more than mediocre... That being said, they do provide a FR graph:

I assume that based on the smoothness that it is not a completely realistic FR, but for ~$100 right now it doesn't seem all out-of-whack like many other cheap options. Could this maybe a sleeper hit from a company both honest and technical enough to even post some information?

I would love to see measurements of these if anyone is willing to bite the bullet...

I think manufacturer provided measurements should be considered meaningles until proven honest. Purrin made a thread about cooking graphs maybe someone can find it. I see them like tobacco company sponsored cancer research.

These do look really nice visually though and you never know maybe they sound good.

I know Lurkumaural and mkubota1 have this headphone, both of whom seem to think it's decent for the price.

Interesting....

Has a little interesting peak around the danger zone, the question is how much smoothing was applied.

Ya know... now that I take a second look, the graph and the style of the plug/in-line remote are remarkably similar to those of AIAIAI...

Which of course, is... Interesting, to say the least!

While aiaiai leans towards bass. These are fairly neutral to my ears. Good isolation. Good airy presentation.

And very flat. They remind me of single TWFK IEMs like the B2 or DBA-02

Airy? as compared to what?

I've seen many comments that state the opposite, so I would appreciate some context.

whoops just realized that he was talking about the Incase Sonic and not either TMA...

They are pretty decent for the price, probably good as or better than most other thing they sit next to at that store with the exception of perhaps the P5s.  But those are about 4x more (street price).  The Sonics can be had regularly for $75ish and I've seen them as low as $50 I think.  My enthusiasm (like for all too many things!) has faded since I first got them.  That said, they're still excellent for their price, one of the most comfortable headphones I have, have decent build except for that cable (too rubbery), and have a decent vee-shaped FR.  I'll try to keep my impressions to a minimum because I find myself changing my mind all too often.  But I will say that they definitely have an emphasis on the low frequencies and the highs.  The bass has a thumpy nature to it, as opposed to that quick punchy one of the V-Moda M80s.  The mids are just there- not great, not horrible.  The highs have a decent sparkle to them which is probably where they get a bit of that airy sound described by some.  The soundstage is decent- likely because of that vee-shaped signature.  The M80s sound a bit closed-in and almost monaural in comparison.  I use the Sonics at work because they're cheap and I don't care that much at work anyway.  As for isolation, they would fall under the semi-sealed category, much like the V-Modas.
