Silent improvements to HD650

As for some of the less stellar recent products, I think they are just chasing the money and what people seem to be already buying so they can stay competitive.

What? The 650 re-voicing kicks ass. Honestly it could be the HD 658 if they painted the body black and not just the box.
Sennheiser wants to part fools from their money while continuing to improve the older product lines. I wish they would just come out with the HD 850 and a true 250 successor. Perhaps they are actually having problems getting rid of the 6 kHz resonance in the HD 800 without a completely new body? The R&D might be too much.

The 6k resonance is from the cups. Arnaud did computer simulations on HF and this was validated years later in the HD800 dissection: http://www.changstar.com/index.php/topic,2208.msg60869.html#msg60869 (http://www.changstar.com/index.php/topic,2208.msg60869.html#msg60869)

The HD800 drivers themselves are fantastic.

The G4me Zero is an excellent closed back gaming headset. The best I've used, and I've used many.

They've been silently improving older audiophile products while working to appeal to other audiences as well (mainstream with Momentum, Urbanite, etc. and gamers with G4me Zero/One).

They're doing right by the company, we just aren't seeing as many headphones as we apparently want. I love the 650 since they cleaned it up, though. I'd kinda prefer them not to make an HD800 that doesn't kill my ears so I can avoid buying it.

Looking at recent launch and marketing and all the product talk they seem to be focusing on more consumer end market, where there is more profit margins.

Yeah, headphones are no longer niche products. They need wider audience variety for still more high volume sales to justify crazy R&D for badassery. As for release dates, time between, etc, I am reminded of some book I read in college written by the CEO of PepsiCo during the cola wars, etc. There was a chapter addressing the time some idiot decided to "liven up" the recipe for Fritos. The punchline of the chapter is "don't fuck with Fritos".

The 580 was released in 92? 93? The 600 was released in 96? 97? The 650 was released in 02? 03? The 800 was released in 08, but is a true achievement in driver design and performance, and a very large step from the 580/600/650. The 600, 650, and 800 continue to sell well, and they are distracted selling weird shit to kids. So be it; I much prefer they take their time and get the next incremental advancement right. I am more disappointed they are spending so much money and energy hyping that stupid marble pet coffin.

After a million samples we've gone through I doubt it. Feel free to post pics of the old mesh versus new.

Many here have the newer 800's that supposedly don't have the peak. Until we listen to them or measure them. The peak is still there. The whole silent revision to the HD800 removing the peak is a total MYTH. We've shown it in about 4-5 different threads here and other places.

If you have proof, feel free to share.

not saying they removed the peak, just saying the metal has changed, could be meaningless.

Yup, I do want. I think you might have issues adjusting to lighting and shadows.

The HD800 is the same. The pads feel slightly different on my older (2009) pair but otherwise they look identical to my coworker's pair (he picked them up last month new)

I honestly dunno. But who cares. I wouldn't think any less of you if you just laugh at it.

BTW haven't seen HF do this. I hope you agree even if you don't understand. Or the other way around. Or something like that.

Pretty sure on HF half this thread would be deleted and the mods would take offense at being called out as jerks.

Here I think most senior members celebrate their level of dbaggery.

I would press the "report to moderator" button if you have an issue. We actually have separation of powers in this pyrate democracy. TheGame is the real legit "moderator" or independent judicial system. The rest of us are scallywags (modern meaning, not US Civil War meaning)

Over on the iem front, Sennheiser is doing interesting things. Look the ie800. Lots of innovation. Sure, it's in some ways to some people a big swing that leads to a single, but Alex clearly was going for it with that one.

But, yeah, maybe part of the argument is that their house sound has changed? Certainly, their iems have been bassy from the ie8 at least, so in portable audio there's some basic consistency in sound. Personally, I'm looking forward to what comes after the ie800 for an in-ear flagship.

As we say it it isn't broke don't fix it.
I believe all the top models are still selling well and IMO offer good value to most everything else out there at their price point

How many times have we heard rumors about the HD-600/650 being discontinued and they are still in the cataloge

I think Sennheiser's main headphone focus over the past few years has been mainly on models for music on the move like the Momentum and Urbanite and IEM's

hello,

my understanding is that the metal cups applied to the HD25 and its like was an improvement. so, perhaps subtle evolution of their long run models?

there seems to be a "let's build five or six variants to see what sticks" approach though. just how many MOMENTUM models have been released in the last two or three years?

The aluminum HD 25 bass is less boomy due to some additional foam damping. It actually has a worse high end somehow and cup sliding issues. Aluminum also dents. Why make tank cans less tank?  The HD 26 looks comfy though and the built in hard limiter could be useful for noise bursts.

Actually not subtle at all in that case. They gave it its own model line called "Amperior". HD25 is still plastic as it was designed for abuse.

Adidas got into the Amperior line as well because metal and three stripes looked cool. There was a proper marketing campaign with enough derived demand that you could find the Amperior in large stores.

Converted a stock HD650 cable into balanced for it. I've also got a silver/kevlar shorter one for portable use.  :)p1
