Wow. RD is a true ortho whisperer!

Interesting!

Notes:
These have been recabled with a Joe Grado Standard Cable (it's the only Yamaha measured here that is recabled), and have a completely different damping scheme than the others which I'll share here in a bit.  It's VERY easy as it's just one material filling the cups.

Honest, unbiased impressions:  ;)
These have a very similar sound to the YH3.  I have always felt they were a bit better in the treble than the YH3.  But I was expecting a small peak in the treble from this damping scheme.  So it's interesting not finding that.  I was also expecting them to be just as clean as the YH3.  They sound just as clean to me.  I'm guessing this is a pretty benign place to have ringing esp when it's not accompanied by a peak like the YH100.  Which makes me think that the peak is more bothersome than the ringing in the YH100.

Agreed. Very impressive!

It's also ortho wall ringing. And I'm not sure we can hear those.

If I had to say "that's my ideal FR curve", while still being new to this hobby - that would come pretty close IMO.

Any pics?  :)p8

Interesting indeed!

What are your subjective imressions, purrin?

Very similar to Whitney's observations. I thought the treble would measure a little worse. Balance is good, but I would have wanted a little bit more fullness, the slight lack of which is prolly related to the small broad recess around 500Hz. Overall, it doesn't sound quite as fast as the YH-3, which remains my favorite of everything Whitney sent me.

They could be fuller, we can blame that on the experimental very simple damping scheme that a 10 year old could implement.  I just wanted to prove it was possible to damp with just this material.

What do you think is causing the treble to sound rough like that?  I'm not sure the very small dip could account for it, but maybe it's the location of the dip more than the size/width of it that is the problem.  Maybe the 10k area is a rather critical part of the treble.

I think the roughness of the treble of is the nature of the driver. The dip actually looks like minor ringing.

^Can it be measured though(treble roughness) ?

yeah - FR, CSD, and distortion  ;)  but they don't always tell you EVERYTHING. a lot, but not everything.

But the treble doesn't look specifically bad in the distortion measurements, so all we have is the little dippy.  :-/

awesome work as usual RD! also jelly of your modding and hearing ability. you're like the fore father of orthos!

Thanks Rex!  I just got obsessed and wasted a lot of time.  You should see the stuff Don can do, he's the one I've turned to multiple times for driver surgery or connection problems which happen fairly often with 30 year old headphones.

You are too modest my friend, I am all a quiver in my goloshes at the thought of my orthos being compared to yours. After all the recent press, I am very curious a the paradox too..dB
