Cizx, you forget that by backing into my parking spot every day, I waste 30-60 seconds of time that I can charge the company for. Secondly, it allows me get out of the building faster in the afternoon. Gotta get out of McLean before traffic starts to spill out into the secondary routes.

More like morons.

There was a sign at the Getty Center parking spots "DO NOT BACK IN". This idiot in a Ford truck backs in and hits an HVAC duct.

I didn't forget that... mostly because I didn't know it in the first place.

The point is that it's inconsiderate. There's a pretty deep and distressing lack of consideration for others in the world.

Don't even get me started on using turn signals.

I'm actually more comfortable in most situations backing into spots. Probably from doing parking displays all summer when I sold cars in college.

I'll back into a stall if theres nobody waiting in the back of me or like mentioned before there's a sign saying not too.  I used to work for a moving company and to get some of the trucks into and back out reversing is needed.  If not try reversing a flatbed truck or a semi through a windy drive way going up a hill when you're already tired from emptying a 45 foot container at someones home.  But, I'm doubting you guys are referring to things like this.  But its a habit for me since we did these things.

Backing into spots is nothing. People in the Valley do all sorts of stupider stuff like drive in the wrong direction in parking garages to get that prime spot - sometimes necessitating the use of 7 point turn; or suddenly stop in the middle of the street to talk to a random person on the side of the road.

Total pet peeve of mine. It's those assholes at work who try to make things easier for themselves but end up scratching my car and not leaving a note.

All the cars in the row have to face the same direction: I don't care which way, but pick one and enforce it.

Ohhh..... I can't handle when people stop in the middle of the parking lot to talk.  At least pull off to the side so the person behind can pass.

One time at walmart I ran over to the car (because it was raining) to go get my mom at the entrance.  Some SUV decided because no one was letting them reverse out of the parking stall they'd just back up.  It happened in front of me and the family decided to roll their windows down and proceed to flip me the bird.  I can't stand people like that too...

Awe fuck... that just happened to my parents new rav4.  Their rav4 got scraped from front to back and no note or anything... and of all places a hospital in the handicap parking...

hello,

i think this depends on other parking habits.

i am of the "drive it like you stole it, park it like a get-away car" school, so i back into (not prohibited) spaces as a matter of course.

i also tend to park on the outside edges of a parking lot, not near the entrance. i also will NOT delay anyone else when i am parking.

there have been way too many instances where a brain dead driver is backing out of a space to leave have nearly flattened me that i consider forward on exit to be a courtesy not an example of hubris.

This is why I made sure to get a car with a back-up camera, and then tested it to make sure I was god. Turns out the guidelines actually have a bout 5 inches of extra space compared to real life. I might back into every parking spot I legally can, but I'm not going to fuck up another car just to make my life easier.

I almost always back in if I don't have someone behind me in the parking lot. I much much prefer backing in to a spot where everything is stationary and I can see what's there, rather than backing up into moving cars and where my view is likely blocked.

Fair to say backing in to parking spot is a case by case decision.

My parking spot at work is next to the fucking wall of the parking garage foundation. Its on the "left" so pulling in means I either can't get out, or I have to be riding the line of the next spot over, which has a trickle down effect of ruining everyone's parking experience. Accordingly, I back in. Since I began this, I actually receive thank you's from people in the elevator because "the last [person] couldn't back in".

By comparison, people that back in at the costco parking lot are assholes and idiots. First, there is simply no need to back in at all; the parking lot is spacious. Second, where are you going to put all that shit you just bought? IN THE BACK, which is now facing the front of someone else's car.

1-Holding up traffic in a parking lot while you do auto gymnastics.
2-You might suck at auto gymnastics and hit someones car. People car barely drive forward with any sort of competence.
3-Speaking of driving forward with competence, retards will forget about cars next to them and turn too soon on the way out and side swipe their neighbors.

Btw, I just backed into a spot in front of my house. Quiet, plenty of room, keeps the nasty pine needles, dust and sap off my windshield. Pine trees suck btw.

Honestly, I take a longer time trying to pull in forward than I do backing in or parallel parking. I park faster/straight as a fucking arrow when I back in since I have the use of my mirrors. My brain is just wired all funky. I'm probably safer to the world backing in since I'm no longer half stupid.

Yeah you should seek immediate help for that. Drive past spot, engage reverse, double back and in. Do you really do that at a busy Mall with lots of traffic in the Bay area? I can't imagine not getting shot for that.

Apparently you haven't parked much in the bay area. In just about every parking lot, it seem to take 4 hours for someone to back out of a spot and 4 hours to front into a spot. It's absurd.

So you would prefer 8 hours backing into a spot? I've seen all I need to see in the Bay area. :P

Parking a car backwards can be less hassle due to steering the following wheels one can go into tighter spaces with single maneuver.
For this to work as intended one needs a male brain (many girls have it) and experience with their car's dimensional perception.

I do it a lot, so call me a  poo hole. I can get faster out from the parking lot too.

I wouldn't in a busy parking lot. What idiot would do that?

This thread fascinates me - here everyone backs into parking spots. Thais are not the best drivers but our parking slots are crazy small and the roadway between them so narrow/tiny it'd be more difficult going in forwards. I guess it's what you're used to and your building design codes.

But thank you for the warning, when I drive in the US i'll remember not to back in to my slot!

Clearly the solution is for everyone to just drive Smartcars... if you still can't park, you can practically push them into the space.

Ah, smartcars bring back fond memories of traveling in Italy. Like the time I saw two cars parallel parked on a street. They'd left too much space between themselves, so a smart car backed in between them. Then again, that's just how the Italians roll.

The number of times I have been involved in tipping, relocating, or placing compact cars between trees is beyond me. Being friends with lineman from the football team was great fun in high school. Those fat bastards could squat-lift almost anything 2 feet off the ground.

I don't really care if someone backs in as long as they are quick, quick meaning not impeding others. Some people can do it super fast and accurately, props to them. Those who have no clue how to do it, while holding up others in a parking lot can fuck off though.

I don't back in myself.

I was assuming basic driving competence.

Honestly, I take a longer time trying to pull in forward than I do backing in or parallel parking. I park faster/straight as a fucking arrow when I back in since I have the use of my mirrors. My brain is just wired all funky. I'm probably safer to the world backing in since I'm no longer half stupid.

Me too. I won't say I never make a mistake, but I have never damaged another car. Well, I have, but not when parking.

I do it a lot, so call me a  poo hole. I can get faster out from the parking lot too.

And my bottom line is that, if you drive in forward, you have to back out and backing out is much much harder than backing in, because you have passing traffic to miss.

Call me a spineless Arsehole! But... please... with the British spelling  :)p2

Is this really a thing? How far down Maslow's Hierarchy have we descended that parking etiquette is the bane of someone's existence?

I park whichever damn way works, including backing into spots, parallel parking, taking up more than one spot, etc. I have to do that so that my wheelchair is not on an incline when I transfer onto it and so I have sufficient space to maneuver out. And I have had these petty assholes key my car when I had to park in two spots (in the back) because all of the handicapped places were filled with red geezer tags and soccer moms who sprained their ankles two years ago.

One problem with parking backwards is if the spaces are angled like they should be in any civilized society ;) (it minimizes door dings), when you leave your space you'll likely either have to drive into oncoming cars or have to make a 120 degree turn where a bunch of things can go wrong.

And now for your viewing pleasure:
