Title: Rum Thread
Post by: CCS on July 12, 2015, 05:48:52 AM
We already have threads for some other beverages and liquors, so why not a thread for the pyrates' drink of choice?

Here is a place to discuss the drink that pyrates should enjoy most. White, dark, black, spiced, flavoured, what have you. I'd like to talk rum in general and would love to hear your thoughts on it.

My most recent drink?

Bacardi Oakheart. A spiced rum that is lighter on the spice, lighter on the sweetness and little stronger on the oak-y flavour that is present in the former bourbon barrels in which the drink is aged. A slightly smoky flavour enhances the finish on a drink that is strong on vanilla and has a gentle cinnamon tone. Personally, not a perfect drink, compared to my personal favourites, but a strong recommendation, especially to fans for bourbon. Mixes best, but acceptable when consumed neat or on ice. 7.5/10

Venezuelan Rum is my bag.  Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva is good and decently priced.  ~$35.  Do not go for the cheaper version with the orange label.  This is sweet, totally drinkable straight and a crowd-pleaser.

As for Cuban and a smoky mixer, I like the 7 year Havana Club.  Black bottle.

What about Gosling's, CT? Good stuff? I've read some decent reviews, but I like hearing from people who drink a decent amount of rum better than those who've had a taste.

Is Venezuelan typically sugar cane or molasses rum? I usually prefer molasses rum, despite sugar cane being considered the more "premium" drink, in general.

I have some Ron Zacapa Centanario I like.  That's a unique cane process. Had their premium TOTL that's not as good. Tried Kraken, meh, cool jug. Tastes too young. Captain Morgan is smooth for a mixer. Looking to try Flor De Cana in various guises. I hear it is one of the best all-round cheapies out there.

Finally a rum thread!

My budget class fave is Old Captain. Mix it with coke (the soft drink variety), lime and it's pretty good, the alcohol isn't too noticeable.

For higher class mixes I prefer Havana Club - Anejo Reserva or Anejo 3 Anejos (cool for Cuba Libres). Avoid Anejo Especial.

Still looking form my favorite sipping rum.

Hi CCS, I don't know the Gosling's...will check it out if I have the chance.  The Diplomatico is molasses-based and i suspect most Venezuelan rums to be.

I've heard good things about Havana Club. A little harder for us to get here I think.

I 've had Havana Club a couple times while abroad. It's good but I didn't find it mind blowing - I think some of the appeal is it being forbidden fruit here.

I too like Zacapa and Flor de Cana.

^Yes, I like Havana Club for the smoke and the way it cuts through a cocktail the same way a really peaty single-malt cuts through and adds to a Blood & Sand.  I no longer would drink the 7-yr Havana Club straight just for the interest and power.
Could label each rum as "sipping" or "mixer"...

hello,

i mix my spirits with ice, so YMMV. (with rum a half lime sometimes.)

this is based on my experience (US dollars) in the state with the highest Spirits Excise Tax in the good ol' USA, (we gotta be #1 in something.)

on a budget: http://cruzanrum.com/rum-collection/cruzan-aged-dark-rum/

when the paycheque has a lot of overtime:

or

and this is yummy on the rocks or as a Cuba Libre (with real cane sugar Coca-Cola, i.e. the Mexican one)

Excited to see a rum thread!  The best one I have had is the Ron Abuelo 12 year from Panama.  It is aged in whiskey barrels and gives it a very different (and delicious) character from the easier to get stuff.  Not much experience with rum outside of the college drink stuff, so excited to try some of the posted recommendations.

Well, this is my first post here. I guess there couldn't be a more worthy topic than this.

Rum has always been my spirit of choice. I suppose I could say that it's in my blood (Aahaaaarrrr M'laddy!!).

But after saying that, the rum I've tried has been quite ordinary (apart from some Jamaican moonshine).
Where I come from, the best popular rum is Lamb's Navy. It's a good dark rum, that's sweet, but with a good flavour. It's always my 'go to'.
Its main competitor has always been Captain Morgan. But the times I've had to drink that stuff, cos' they haven't got anything else, it tastes like they've used glass cleaning solution as a mixer; it's vile!!

Another rum I'll never forget is Appleton's. There was both a white and a golden variety, but no dark. Perhaps not a real pirate's rum, but both are very agreeable. I remember that the white tasted like a ready mixed Bicardi and Malibu (I've got a sweet tooth), only better.

The real swabbie's drink has to be Wood's 100 Old Navy; it's 57% vol. Strangely, I can't remember what that stuff tastes like. I guess that I'd better have a 'refresher'.

I have had all of Gosling's rum except the 151. My favorite is the Old Rum. It's their Black Seal rum that's aged longer. Mixer or straight works.   But it's $70 or $80. Their Black Seal is very good and makes a great Dark and Stormy. And it's only around $20.

A few nights and a few glasses deep into a bottle of Gosling's Black Seal now, and I am pleased to find that some rums actually are good for sipping. I'm looking forward to exploring more and finding a favourite rum.

I've done a little more 'research' (which, unfortunately isn't as interesting as it could be; you can't get the stuff where I am), and found out some more about 'Pusser's' rum. This is a relatively new brand that's supposed to be based on the same blend that the British sailors were rationed, up until the 1970s.

I think that I may look for a bottle, the next time I'm in the airport duty free. They've got a whole range of it, but I guess I'd better start myself off gently and go for a bottle of reduced strength (it's only 40% vol) 'Blue Label'. Although I'd like to go straight for the 15 year old (if I can afford it).
I'll also keep an eye open for Gosling's rum.

Just started some Bacardi Anejo. I think it may be an inferior, but possibly acceptable, sipper. But, it may be a superior rum for Cuba Libres or daiquiris. Perhaps not a better all around cocktail rum, but for my favorite mixes, including a very simple mix of rum and pineapple juice, it may work better than Black Seal.

The journey continues.

Almost finished with a fifth of Mount Gay Eclipse gold rum. Not a good sipping rum, by any means. The flavour has some depth and complexity to it, but the rum is too sweet and there is no boldness to the opening flavours, nor those that lie underneath the front notes.

As a shooter, the rum is exceptionally smooth, with little to no burn, despite its standard 80 proof potency. May also be good in cocktails, but for Cuba Libre (my favourite rum cocktail), I'd prefer Bacardi Anejo or Oakheart.

It may be a while before I've had anything new, but I will definitely be back to weigh in on a number of other pyrates' spirits.
