PS500 (modded with funky earpad attachment gizmo) Measurements

Subjective Impressions:

Jason sent these in to me. They are Grado PS500 with funky earpad attachment gizmos. They reminded me a lot of Fischer FA-011 (which I stole from LFF and am using for computing gaming) or Grado GS1000/PS1000. Ton of mid-bass. Ton sizzly treble. Does NOT sound like there's lot ringing in the deadly area between 6-12kHz. The elevated treble is still bothersome; and the tonal response lifted at the ends is really funky (or either the mids are really recessed). The mids sound smooth though.

CSDs.

I will take the earpad gizmos off and put regular bowl pads to get standard PS500 results. Tomorrow.

So these aren't just 2012 HF2's?

I think I heard these at the Bay Area meet. I actually liked them  p:/

Interested in seeing pictures of this gizmo.

The FR plot reminds me of the DT-990: A lot of emphasis > 5kHz. However, these seem to have much more mid-bass. Do these sound more balanced and less fatiguing (than the DT-990) given the mid-bass emphasis?

Where these the ones Jason had at T.H.E. Show?

Yes, but modified.  Shouldn't say more w/o further permission.  ;)

Thanks for the graphs :) Assuming the stock PS500 has a similar FR, we can actually assume that it's quite linear (if we eq down the treble) after the bass hump. This is because the treble doesn't seem to be as peaky as the HF2 measurement and the SR-series Grados.

Given this I'm experimenting with eq'ing down the 100hz and 6.5khz peaks. The mids now seem to be too forward, even though I've only lessened the 6.5khz peak with a gradual slope ending at -5db.

Bass is soo grado-like.

But FR and signature sound aside. They look like very good drivers...

FR above 2KHz looks a lot different from Tyll's measurements on IF.  I am curious if stock L-chush measurements will confirm this sizzly plot.

Tyll and I use differing methodologies. However I suspect that you'll find the relative differences (say between HF2 and PS500) surprisingly close within each framework.
