Title: Electronic Music Thread - No Anime/Manga, Dubstep, DnB or made in asia.
Post by: Prydz on July 15, 2015, 01:31:19 PM
Hello!

I'm a huge fan of electronic music, but the thread on Head-Fi is loaded with dubstep and hentai which I hate with passion. In this thread we can share house, electro, edm, whatever, just no dubstep, dnb, hentai or music made in Asia. Already have Head-fi's thread for such.

Personally I'm a huge fan of Jamie XX, Four Tet, Moderat, Burial, all those more darker/downtempo/experimental electronic music, but also EDM, as nothing is more fun then some raving!

So please share ahead!

Thats exactly why I said no hentai, but I changed to no Asian. Head-Fi is filled with such music, and its not what im looking for.

You might want to just change it to "No Anime/Manga Themed" since plenty of is also made by white as the driven snow weaboos like myself....

Really, no dubstep or DnB? There's amazing music among all genres. The stuff I've seen in the Head-fi thread has mostly been super experimental.

Not that it really means this in Japanese, but in English usage, "hentai" specifically refers to pornographic animation or drawings in in anime style.

Hence the confusion among some.  What exactly does it take to make music pornographic?

Now back to the music...

I will suggest a classic album from the 90ties. This album is full of dynamic range, layers, details and compositional genius. B.B.E.'s album "Games" is a must have if you want a taste of Electro/House/Techno before bland mainstream crap took over.

I grew up with this music. The Netherlands were a great place to get a taste for this kind of music. Break beat and big beat were less popular in the Netherlands though. For break beats and big beats the UK and to an extent France were great in the 90ties. France is great for real Dub music.

I understand "dubstep" not being welcome. But much of what gets called dubstep is really something like brostep (e.g. Skrillex). When I think dubstep, I don't think Skrillex and Diplo. I think Burial and Volor Flex. It seems like the term has been widely misapplied to the point that it's hopelessly corrupted. My friendly suggestion would be either adding scare-quotes to dubstep in the thread title or replacing "dubstep" with brostep.

I think Sabo can stand against anything in Burial's discog, including Untrue and Kindred.

hentai dubstep

Wait.

That's a thing?

Edit:

Well, here is my contribution. This is very much not dubstep and not anime, but the music video is just about the most NSFW / NSFL fucked up hentai guro stuff you might see outside of 8chan.

'Still Life' by Oneohtrix Point Never

I'm not even going to embed the video but I love the album (R Plus Seven) and the mv is an interesting comment on 'special interest' internet subcultures.

Boards of Canada - Geogaddi
Booka Shade - Movements
Ellen Alien & Apparat - Orchestra of Bubbles
Fennesz - Endless Summer
Hallucinogen - Twisted
Herbert - Bodily Functions
Junior Boys - Last Exit
Kraftwerk - (Anything, really)
Luomo - Vocalcity
Metro Area - Metro Area
Mouse on Mars - Idiology
Pan Sonic - Kulma
Ricardo Villalobos - Alcachofa
Squarepusher - Music is Rotted One Note
The Knife - Deep Cuts

Fair enough. Like I said, I understand wanting to distance the thread from "dubstep". As long as Burial-like artists aren't forbidden. I'm not sure I know what hentai dubstep is. So far, I've resisted clicking on Lachlan's link, though Oneohtrix Point Never is some tight shit.

I see no problem with well produced brostep/dubstep. The only issue I have with it is the massive amount of saturation in the genre by unskilled producers, which is the kind you hear all over youtube.

If your listening setup is conducive to hearing deep, impactful bass and good separation and imaging, pretty much all genres of EDM can shine. Well known producers like Spor/Feed Me, Rob Swire (from Pendulum/Knife Party), Noisia, Skrillex, Deadmau5, KOAN Sound etc. are all actually masters of their craft.

Here are some examples (if nobody likes them I'll post more IDM/less mainstream stuff next time :p):

If i crave for electro i usually go after some Darkside/Nicolas Jaar these days.
Top notch mastering q and natural sounding instruments.

Also to consider:

Trentemoller (trance-melodical techno like)
Flashbulb (experimental, groovy)
Pig&Dan (german techno, dry)
Sunmonx (trance-break like)
Noisia (dnb-break-techno like)
Extrawelt (industrial-german techno)
Minilogue (minimal-ambient)
Daft Punk (house-like groovy)
Solar Fields (trance-ambient)
CarbonBasedLifeforms (trance-like ambient)
Infected Mushroom (psy-trance/Isreal trance, probably too extreme for what you want)

Thank you for this!  I am pretty new to electronic music, so I've been listening to a lot of the suggestions in this thread.  I am pretty allergic to dubstep for some reason, and I prefer some vocals with my music.  After your teasers of Danyka's 3 songs in your post, I found some more of her songs via the Monstercat albums on bandcamp.  Suffice to say I am hooked!  Too bad she doesn't have an album of her own - I am buying her songs a la carte from various Monstercat albums, haha.

All of these are excellent suggestions. The genre tags are appreciated, too.

About half of those are regularly played in my music player - all top quality artists.

I'm really digging her voice. You're right about her popping up in a lot of electronic tracks. A quick search on Spotify revealed roughly four solo pop songs but a large number of collaborations with electronic artists. Gonna enjoy exploring.

Thank you for the Lee Bannon tip. He strongly reminds me of the early Electro pioneers that create their own sound.

I shall add Armand van Helden. Too overlooked in sub and mainstream Electro and House. His album "Ghettoblaster" is ghettoblaster worthy.

Alexander Valentyn (sometimes spelled "Valentijn"!) is an upcoming DJ/producer with a more minimal sound. He appreciates a good groove though.

See this is what's excellent about Changstar: You find people with obscure but excellent, spot-on taste. When I saw you'd linked Ishome I was so fucking stoked because it indicates the sort of unique music people can expect to find on this thread. Perhaps I'm expressing preferences here - I really do love Ishome - but I do think it's reason to celebrate.

Here's an album I've been listening to a lot recently. It's located at the intersection of the slow jam and chillout. Like a slow jam without the pressure of trying to get laid. It's a sound I've loved since discovering e.g. Submerse's Algorithms and Ghosts and Melancholy.

Been listening to this the past two days. It's sad that the only Manu Shrine you can find on Spotify, Tidal and iTunes is the Inmate EP. I love that EP. But it seems like Manu Shrine has done a lot else besides.

Edit: Found their bandcamp page, so I can DL their albums.
Edit2: "Clocks Ticking in my Head" is an excellent track on Annutara Ash.

Flying Lotus did a great remix of a track by Andreya Triana called 'lost where I belong', very trippy.

I've been enjoying the Paper Sorcerer (http://www.gog.com/game/paper_sorcerer) OST lately.  All very electronic which is kinda surprising for a modern fantasy game not limited by an 8 bit synth.

https://youtu.be/JOH1dWxSp9o

I got the OST when it was part of a Humble Bundle.  Not sure when you can get it now though.

That music needs in my opinion some good audio to be very enjoyable and engaging. All detail and ambiances matters and magic disappears if the reproduction is not good.

Oldie but a goodie.. this gorgeous take on this Alice Russell classic.  TM Juke's original production was so good, so I've heard more boo boo remixes of this beautiful track than great ones.  This dub-soaked remix by FKJ clearly falls in the latter category.

Not technically electronic but definitely not made in Asia and this is perhaps the greatest work of art to come from the Old World.  I am curious to know what you think of this masterpiece Prydz.

(click to show/hide)

It can hardly be categorised as electronic, but it has some fine sounds and I personally like synth-s of that era.
My gripe with this whole genere is it was pop when my parents were young and radio played this stuff all day long when I was little, so I kind of get sick now hearing 80-90's pop.

If anyone has Google Music, I put together a pretty long (and growing) playlist of liquid electronic music that I listen to at work pretty frequently.

It's largely slower, bassier music. Caution: There's some stuff in there that people consider dubstep, but usually it's melodic or liquid dubstep.

Expansive, Bassy, Relaxing
https://play.google.com/music/playlist/AMaBXynk4RbLOdRmlcH0UIWTHoQaJCgs8JQBh27SSfjp1a-b-oQHgXIyasxk7ju9d7QqnLkrfk6A7383gZeipbVzPzfpgcsNbQ==

A dude at work made a Spotify version of the list a while back, but it's pretty far behind now (38 instead of 83 tracks):

They tried to go Bach and rock out while sounding like the serious side of the Cutting Crew. David Bowie and Brian Eno did a better job by reinventing Pop with albums like "Low." Fuck that song, Freddy Mercury rocked harder with his voice alone. "Ashes To Ashes" for those wannabees, prepare for synthesizer bliss that does justice to Bach with an artist to match. That glorious fade out...
