Title: Battle of the Bands: The Best Live Rock Album
Post by: burnspbesq on January 22, 2013, 08:50:01 AM
If there's something not listed that you like better than all of these, don't hesitate to throw it out there.

UFO, "Strangers in the Night"
Thin Lizzy, "Live and Dangerous" (though some might argue that it was heavily overdubbed)

I haven't heard all the live albums on the list but the Talking heads one is definitely a good one

Wow!  So many great live rock albums come to mind!

From the list I went with Live at Fillmore East, but the others are all great albums.

There are too many great ones to narrow it down to one!!  Some greats for me...

I'll quit while I am ahead...

Bob Dylan, Bootleg Series Volume 4. Live at "The Royal Albert Hall"

Dylan does an acoustic set and then a first ever electric set that pisses off the audience. He doesn't give a shit and keeps going. A killer show.

The Rolling Stones Live at The Checkerboard Lounge

First ever electric set was at Royal Albert Hall?  I thought it was in Newport at the Folk-fest?

Either way, at that time as he was transitioning it really raised hell with audiences!

Woops, looks like you're right about that!

I can only go by the stories my parents told me. They grew up in Newport when this was all happening.  I still laugh when I think of them hanging out on the lawn outside Fort Adams listening to Dylan.  They talk about it like it was no big deal... just some guy coming into town and playing some songs.  From what they said, the whole Folk Fest crowd was pretty traditional, so breaking out an electrical guitar at that event a bit radical to say the least!

FWIW, I voted for "Waiting for Columbus." I saw Little Feat on the tour that led to that album, and it was a truly extraordinary show.

I have the first-gen MoFi reissue on vinyl, and in general it sounds great, but be warned: the treble is really hot. If your ears are sensitive to that, you may not want to listen to it using unmodded 800s.

It was hard to leave "Band of Gypsies" and "The Last Waltz" out of the poll.

And when you haters are done chewing on "Frampton Comes Alive," you can move on to "Live Bullet" by Bob Seger.

As great as Springsteen is live, I don't think "Live 1975-85" comes close to capturing the magic, and "Live at Hammersmith Odeon" is missing later songs that became hallmarks of the live shows.

I voted for Live at Fillmore East, but Band of Gypsies is probably the one I listen to the most.

I haven't heard a couple in this thread, so I got something to look forward to.

+1 for ABB @ Fillmore East

Filmore East is a great one. I also have come to really like "Neil Young - Live at Massey Hall". Just Neil and his guitar and piano. Simply recorded. Nice sense of the venue space. A lot of songs that would end up on Harvest, without any "production" added on yet.

I have not heard the Dead's Live in Europe album since about 1972! Still I'm voting for it, because I can't imagine a better band live.

Even thinking of this album, though, brings me out in a cold sweat of guilt and self-loathing. At the time, a triple album (it was, and we really only had vinyl then) would have cost a substantial percentage of my then income of about UK£20 a week. My housemate had a copy. I put it down on the television. Heat and vinyl don't go well together.

My band mate... however, there's a Made in Japan and Live in Japan. I prefer the former...check out the opening by Jon Lord on Highway Star.

Deep Purple Mark II was too awesome for words  headbang

Most of all I liked the Ian Paice's drumming. Only Iron Maiden really impressed me as much as Deep Purple in the drumming department. He was exceptional as if he was jazzing out to Hard Rock and Proto Metal, fucking awesome.

Man, I could never transition from DP to heavy metal. Simple reason is DP could write head pounding rock and very nice rock ballads like Never Before (Machine Head). To me, the trio of Blackmore, Lord and Paice was the backbone but Ian Gillan made enormous contributions.

You still had Uriah Heep until Dave Byron passed away. Uriah Heep just rocked less hard in general. Between Ian Gillan and Dave Byron there was little to choose from for me. They were both great.

I always prefer instrumentals unless the vocalist is exceptional. Ian Gillan and Dave Byron were both exceptional. After them Freddy Mercury made history.

Hendrix's Woodstock performance may top my list.

I'd also put a slew of Dave Matthews albums pretty high up the list.

And that's why I thought both Rod Evans (Mark I) and Coverdale (Mark III) didn't pass the muster.
