Title: yesssssss, I finally got them! Technics sb7000a!
Post by: RexAeterna on October 19, 2014, 05:52:51 PM
Yup as title says I finally got them. I cant tell you how long I been looking for these and wanting these. The guy I got them off recaps, refoam, and fixes gear so the speakers were already top condition. Only wear on them is little knick on back lower corner but all drivers work perfectly.  Even the tweeters. First thing I notice is how clear they are and the openness in the stereo imaging with precision. They sound very resolving as well. I love the midrange on them. Reminds me of a good planer headphone in midrange transparency. The highs sound pleasant and extend well. The bass is punchy and super clean. Take in mind this is just having 20 minutes with them as im out as of now writing this. Will try to post pics later if I can. I love them though and are everything I hoped for. Just very happy my search is over with speakers...for now :)

Wow, grats! Looks pretty sick. How big are those drivers? What are you amping them with?

Thanks. The drivers are like odd ball size (another reason why pain if have to find driver replacement). Woofer is like 13", midrange 4.75", dome tweeter 1.25". Right now just using my onkyo tx-sr602 receiver.

They are very effortless and can hear everything with no straining in the stereo imaging. Also it seems to have very good crossover cause I never heard drivers blend together so seamlessly.  The cabs are heavy and well built and treated.even though it is ported design I haven't heard any hint of port noise.  They seem like a well built closed cab. Take in mind too the guy that worked with me and sold to me had them for long time and even worked on them. Even kept the tweeters in good working order. I say it's one heck of deal for 150 I paid. I think I did really good especially since my last pair of speakers were almost twice as much and I think these out perform them in terms of stereo imaging precision, clarity, and in resolution. There resolving ability and refinement reminds me of the lambda pros in a way, like good electrostatic.

The price I paid for the is same price you end up paying for pair working tweeters for this model. That's how ridiculous the prices for these speakers are. I think it was luck and patience once again.

Sorry couldn't take better photos here. Just been using phone. And only way I was able to tether the phone is using vpn like cyberghost cause I am not paying the phone company money for a feature a phone already has for their stupid pricey hotspot crap. Cyberghost stopped working though and says possible isp provider in this country blah blah blah has blocked cyberghost.  That's only way I been using my computer online.

Anyhoo, I know there is not much known bout these speakers especially since they're technics.  This model wasn't marked much in the us and were like 450 a piece back in the 70's. They use cloth on the woofer and midrange with rubber surrounds. Supposedly cloth was used lot for professional drivers. The soft dome tweeter is made with some weird material and even has a surround around as well unusually with what technics claims uses extremely powerful square ferrite magnet.  I don't see how people blow these tweeters easily.  I read though they're usually just dislodge from the magnet and needs realignment.

Overall I think they very good and other few who actually owned working pair with original drivers do too and compared to very high end model speakers. I love how they're design as well with separate cabs for each driver instead of just one big box with drivers all cramped in at once. Technics has made some gems but of course most of those were marketed overseas mostly while Panasonic sold mostly box set crap in the US. That's  why speakers like the 7000A is overlooked. Technics even made professional speakers like the sb-10 which uses their specialized leaf tweeter which was accidentally marketed as an electrostatic tweeter but their leaf tweeter is basically similar to a ribbon tweeter. But, yea, anyhoo, technics made good speakers and again apologize for horrible presentation here. Im horrible with phones and using a decent phone only makes it harder.

There is something great going on with the cloth/paper bass drivers. A friend of mine had concert speakers, i guess from 80's that had 15'' cloth bass driver. Epic slamm, sharp and powerful. Somehow modern composite elements don't do that so well.

Dude! My girlfriend's dad has some of these he was trying to get rid of at our garage sale. No one bit, though. They definitely need newfoam butttt if someone wants em holla!

That looks awesome. Now you know why I like big woofers. It's that "effortless" thing.

Yea, I like the use of cloth. Last speakers I had with cloth drivers was the pioneer cs77a I believe it was. They were very pretty to look at but sound was decent due to midrange sounding bit hollow. The 12" cloth woofers was amazing though cause punchy they were and had good quick slam. The pioneers used cloth surrounds too but I think it limited it's excursion while the technics 13" woofer is cloth with what seems to be rubber surrounds for higher excursion but never tested it's limits yet but can say I don't need my subwoofer no more since the woofers in the technics seem to extend as low but sounds lot more clear and clean.

Your friend probably used some form of altec lansings maybe. Atlec lansing made a lot of huge heavy speakers.  Altec lansing was known for their speakers during the 70's and 80's.

Foam? Only part of speakers has foam is the opencell foam it used for underneath the tweeter and midrange to help with reflections off the cabinets to clean up the frequency response a bit. They do sound good without the foam. I used temporary closedcell craft foam I had leftover underneath just sitting there and does help clean it up bit and sound bit more focused but plan on getting some opencell foam from foamfactory very soon.

Thanks! I was just glad I found them finally and in good working prestige condition. The guy was awesome too. Never in my time using craigslist never met someone as cool and patient as this guy who sold them to me was. Defiantly working with that guy again next time if I end up buying something else.

Couple more pics. Photos probably gonna end upside down or something haha. But yea the switchers on the back all it basically does lowers the output for the tweeter and midrange.  I don't find it necessary and keep it at 1 (normal). The foam is temporary.  All I did cut some quick pieces and placed underneath till I get proper opencell foam. Probably just gonna get some air conditioning opencell foam or online at the foam factory.

I take more pics laters with it's cloth covers on but getting some actual down time with these, these things sound beautiful. Never heard voices and music rendered so amazingly. Even purcussions and snares sound so clean and natural to me even with my so not perfect room.depends on source lot though. Good source and recording they sound best other times can so pretty good but doesn't bother me too much since lot music I listen to of all kinds are not perfect itself so it's expected.

I think I found endgame speakers.  Im still curious bout some speakers but I think be extremely hard to find replacement speakers cause I like these a lot. Not bright, dark or nothing. Just right.

This would not be a proper Rex thread if the pictures weren't sideways and upside down.

Congrats on the score, Rex!

I did spend some time wondering about the ceiling-hight installation. Some people like their speakers like that!

Then I noticed that a whole lot of other stuff was attached to the ceiling too. That seemed odd, so I started to think about it...

Very nice find and AWESOME deal.

I have been curious about these for a long time. Never found a set locally but I have always been happy with the output of my JBL 4311's. I have too many speakers.

Thanks!

If you ever around nj should hit me up. Glad to give an audition.

I always been curious about the jbl's besides the Yamaha ns10m/ns1000m. These were the only technics I was so fascinated with when I first got back into audio seriously in my late teens for music and some occasional studio use. I found good amount jbl 4312b's and L100's but people were asking too high of price for them and were way out what could afford at the time. Atleast I finally found the technics cause  I really like them. Im still gonna keep an eye out for pair of jbl's to atleast try to audition them see what they sound like.

I finally got some felt at local arts and crafts store and replaced the crappy foam with this felt. It was highly recommended by an ak'er when I looking for suggestions about external damping material for the midrange and tweeter since I wanted to do something without ruining the cabs.

Not best cut or placement in the world but I atleast tried my best without screwing up. Took me a long time to cut the felt perfectly for the midrange since I doubled the felt there to reach as close to the midrange as possible. I think it turned out fine. Now that im finish working on these I can just start listening to some music.

I just need to buy some brasso to polish the metal plates on the tweeters and some lemon oil to polish the wood. Finish finally though since been busy all week especially since Halloween is like in a day or so.

Edit: I try to upload a photo later. Some reason it's not letting me now.

SB-7000 were hightly forced in Russia some years ago, so its now not a small amount around here. Was dreaming of them then, but never got a chance to listen personally. Nice ones, grats :)

I kinda forgot about this thread...anyhoo,  yea, for some reason I was always curious when I was looking the up, a lot of info and vids were from russian sites besides japanese ones. Don't know why technics decide to have more popular market there in than the US.

Thanks. these are really special speakers I think. Besides being cool and interesting looking they sound very, very good. I recently cleaned up the dust caps and got them brand new looking. The dust caps are cloth but with like foam layer over them. They do over time the foam starts to decay. Don't know why technics decided to do that for but I managed to wipe it all off. Was gonna add new speaker posts at first but the originals work fine and easy to use. Just later down the road I probably redo the felt I have underneath the midrange an tweeters cause I didn't get it perfect way I wanted to first time around. Overall I really like these little guys and gonna keep them around.

Here's the dust caps all clean (picture should be in attachment).

I decided to tinker with them more. Decided redo the bass cab, midrange cab, and tweeter back cover.

I decided to take lot of the pillow stuffing out in the bass cab and kept layer along the walls. Stuffed bit around the port too. I placed some 9" thick r30 fiberglass on the floor of the cab underneath the port. Looking at design original sb7000 model without the port it used like a loaded cavity so I tried simulating that by plugging the port up and just placing fiberglass on the floor underneath the port section. Don't think these 14" woofers weren't designed for a ported design anyways. Found out these woofers are similar to the jbl le14 14" professional woofers so most likely do better in proper closed design.

I restuffed the midrange cab with some same density fiberglass. These midranges are heavy and use an unusually large size magnet....

The tweeters were kinda pain in the ass. They weren't kidding that they use an unusually powerful magnet for the domes. I took the back plate off and looked inside. Looks interesting,  kinda looks like a planer like design on how the magnet is. It already has fiberglass layer behind the dome in a cavity but I decided it couldn't hurt stuffing bit in the cup/plate.

I know no one cares but since there is very limited information or experience with these I would like to keep people up to date with these. One thing digging around atleast I know won't be hard finding woofers for these if I ever need to replace them. Seems JBL made some odd ball 14" cloth woofers too. Only drivers that will be hard to replace on these are the tweeters if they ever go.

Cool stuff, Rex, thanks. Like I said, gf's dad has a pair and they're just sitting in their garage. I think there was a torn woofer so now I'm tempted to fix them up...nowhere for me to put them, though.

They are worth a fix up. They are good sounding speakers. If end up not liking them you can easily sell them for profit. The tweeters alone can go for avg of 150 a piece if working (last time I checked) or can always find someone to make a trade for something. I don't know. I think these are keepers though for me atleast.

If it's small tear, that can easily be repaired. I would just check the tweeters first cause some reason they were supposedly known to be blown easily or somehow become shifted from the magnet locking the drivers up.

The speakers aren't super large but pretty bulky. They're pretty heavy too at 75lbs each so moving them around can be bit annoying. The handles do help lot though. They can fit in a medium size room easily if don't have much furniture already. My room is considered medium size at 15'x15' even though I find it big and they fit perfectly here.

Kinda had a scare earlier lol. My left speaker volume gotten real low..it was the tweeter..... I took the tweeter off the cab, unscrewed the front plate that has the tweeter attached and carefully looked at it. The voice coil looked fine and the strands from the voice coil to the terminals looked fine.

So, I decided to see if realigning the voice coil to the magnet works and...it did! Volume level came back to normal.

Had no idea what caused it to be unalign. I only ever moved them to stuff the bass cabs and I moved them carefully and after that they were working perfectly.

I wonder if my amp sent a weird surge/signal to them when I was messing with wires and rca cables back of my amp....anyhoo,

Looking at the domes there was little piece of fiberglass in there and the voice coil looked gold...not copper like usual voice coils. Wonder if it's gold plated copper but, why would they use that for a tweeter? Weird... but, yea, they work like new now and all fixed. I mean like wtf! Though...dont know what happened.
