Title: meet Dave...
Post by: x838nwy on May 15, 2015, 04:12:48 AM
I have a feeling folks around here are totally going to love this.

14th May 2015, High End, Munich – Chord Electronics is proud to unveil the world’s most advanced digital to analogue convertor, DAVE

https://www.dropbox.com/s/weqwn00s8kxev8o/Chord%20Electronics%20DAVE%20press%20release%20final.pdf?dl=0 (https://www.dropbox.com/s/weqwn00s8kxev8o/Chord%20Electronics%20DAVE%20press%20release%20final.pdf?dl=0)

When will they change that godawful font on their display?

A shitty little lo-rez LCD display? For that kind of money I'm expecting a custom circular OLED.

My first thoughts:

This thing makes the Hugo look elegant and simple by comparison.

So let me get this straight. With the stupid 4-poster holder gizmo, it makes it difficult to get access to the headphone jack? (which is TSR on a top-end DAC/amp combo)
 walk the plank2

Veritas in extremis? Uh, extremā. I doubt this is a poetic plural for singular employed for the sake of meter.

£7,995 is the price... More than $10,000 :(.

If you gave me that DAC for free, I still wouldn't put that on my rack. Chord needs to hire a designer that didn't get high in a locked room with just a shitty fruit cake for company.

For it's price, that porthole had better be waterproof to 40 meters and come with it's own periscope.

Dave: the DAC of choice for Naval re-enactors & submarine fetishists.

I have owned a few Chord DACs, some good, some not so good, and I've found that the higher end units like the QB76 stood out among their contemporaries at the time of release.

That being said, they've maintained high end pricing with no significant improvement in sound. Hell, the Hugo was not significantly better than the QuteHD which, to me, was a big step back from the QB76. In the world of Yggdrasil, $10k+ DACs can no longer be "just good" but have to really excel. I'll reserve judgment until I hear it, but I suspect value proposition is low.

Wow, didn't catch this the first time -

"DAVE which joins Hugo and stands for Digital to Analogue Veritas in Extremis."

Breaking out the latin now, how sophisticated. Please tell me that it's conjugated incorrectly, that would make my day.

No idea. All I have to say is. "Hi, Dave!"

And to think that I once stood outside a hifi shop slobbering over just the looks of a Chord power amp  :-[ :-[ :-[

And bend over and take it proposition is high! Just a hypothesis of course.

Given the camp I fall into, I'm not a fan of any of these 'audiophile' DACs, but at least the guys at Schiit actually design some interesting circuits.

Also, if you went to Chord's website without knowing better, you might think they were actually selling vintage props from 50's sci-fi movies or something.

To be fair, their gear looks okay if it's all in an all-Chord setup. A little weird in isolation.

Make sure to get a matching case for your PC as well.

And it doesn't have gimbals. From here-on-in, nothing should get the audiophile label unless it is mounted on gimbals

and a person wanted that look in the first place. The sort of thing specified by futuristic architects and interior designers. Looks great in the glossy mags, but not so great in real life.

(I do believe that looks are a valid part of the user experience, but, Looks maketh not the audio.  Or whatever Shakespeare said. Chord seem to believe otherwise.)

Seems Chord has been taking design tips from Dan D'Agostino...

You are right. A porthole only makes sense if you are a) on a boat looking out or b) outside a boat looking in!  :)p1

Round LCD displays are like round TVs they had in the 60s -  a bit awkward!
And only really make sense if you are looking at the rpm/speedo dial of a Corvette!

You might have guessed it - but even 164.000 taps are never going to be good enough.

Meet "BORIS"  (Binary Ordinary Robbery in Extremis) £ 24.000 | 500.000 taps (Bargain at only £0.05/tap - same as the Hugo!)
New cutting edge bespoke truly stunning 3D Spheric Holographic Porthole!

Contrary to Moore's Law our DACs are getting more expensive every year! But you don't mind that - do you matey?!
Hell we own the proprietory WTF [What the …] multitap filter technology.
Cause more taps is better no matter what! And if you are not happy with that, just go and buy any old cheap American Schiit.
You know it's true because it's me John F., MD Chord Electronics LTD., Kent, England!

And you also might have guessed we are already working on the follow-up model which will be called
"TOM" (Take all our bloody money) 1.000.000 taps, which will be available next year for the same price/tap (you do the maths).

PS: If you still don't believe me, just scoot over to our mates at WTF-HIFI's website to check out the compulsory 5-Star, honest, hand on heart, "Does the bear shit in the woods" review. You won't be disappointed! Forget about Multibit -> Multitap's the word and Rob's your uncle!

Taxi!

Is the tap dancer included? You need a PRaT and Swing indicator.

Good one.

No, they are delivered with the shoes. You can dance to keep yourself warm in winter, after they have taken all you money, and you can't pay for heating.

Add some Disco if you need to "Burn Baby Burn" for that "Disco Inferno" if you do not want to end up like a tramp.

You can also post images of emperor Nero on his harp and Rome burning in the background. When asked about the meaning you can state: "the taps of people running for their life made him happy and he built a new palace, such a personality."
