Title: MOG
Post by: fishski13 on April 30, 2012, 05:38:22 AM
i signed up for the free version of MOG tonight.  unlike Spotify, they claim up to 320kbps with the free version, depending on what the label gives them.  a cursory comparison with a few Bjork, Air, and XTC songs via lossless JRiver Media and HD do reveal a sonic penalty, but nothing offensive.  i didn't sign up expecting sonic purity, but rather a means to search out and listen to new artists before committing to purchasing the CD.  i'm digging it so far.

Good find! I just signed up as well.

I like how you don't have download a program like Spotify. It doesn't seem as social as Spotify though where you can see what your friends are listening to and send them playlists and stuff. On second thought, maybe that's a good thing.

Listening to the new Jack White album now.

supposedly you can sign up for MOG without FB, but the link i found didn't work.  i work with some sociopaths that i will need to de-friend if i don't want them to view what i listen to, and possibly make false assumptions re: my lifestyle.

Goddamn CRTC blocks everything worthwhile in Canada.

Is Pandora still popular in the states?

I don't see many people using Pandora anymore now that Spotify has taken over.

I've had a MOG subscription for three or four months now and have been very happy.  The iDevice app (and Windows app.. which has Kernel Streaming, I believe) is nice.. easy to navigate.. and the development crew interfaced well with customers to improve and add features.

Got the $9.99/mo subscription that gives me 320kbs streaming to all my devices and the ability to download songs when out of signal range. I fucking love it. It's practically the only thing I listen to (music ADD ... must. try. something. new. always.)

Love MOG. Much better SQ than Spotify premium IMO. I've been using the $4.99 plan for a while, but recently switched to the $9.99 plan for mobile. I don't think the software is as robust as Spotify, but music/SQ wise- much better.

So, how does the MOG premium service work on multiple devices? Can I simultaneously stream on multiple devices -- or does it lock you to only one streaming device at a time?

At home I use mog through a Vortexbox controlled by iPeng streaming to two synced Squeeze devices and it works very well.

I've got them playing ATM and tried using MOG on my Galaxy Nexus phone and had no troubles getting access.

My daughter will also sometimes use my account on her computer at the same time I am using it on my system ... screws up my recommendations though.  :)p12

Carly Rae Jepsen not audiophile quality enough for you?  :P

Thanks for the feedback. I think I'll take the plunge too.

It's interesting because I've always been able to play MOG from multiple devices simultaneously, but their website says you can't (http://support.mog.com/kb/general-information/can-i-use-mog-from-multiple-locations)- maybe it's outdated. This is one the the features I really liked over Spotify, which only allowed one at a time.

I haven't used MOG that much outside of a few week trial a year ago, but I really think Spotify stands out for its selection of new and Independent artists. I commonly see five or six previously unknown artists that started publishing less than two years ago pop up in a standard listening session of mine. As a nice bonus, many of the recommendations I receive come from artists around the world!

regarding MOG's stream quality... It hasn't been beaten, yet! However, since I primarily use spotify just to find new music while working or taking care of other things, I am not bothered by this.

Still no Pandora or MOG for us yanks abroad in the UK... It's Spotify for now. Well, unless I hide behind a VPN... Etc... Easier just to use a service that is set to work here for now.

I'd like to see MOG go international, it seems promising.

Not sure if you guys are aware. MOG was purchased by Beats (http://articles.marketwatch.com/2013-01-10/industries/36252087_1_mog-music-fans-service) last summer, and it will become their new "Project Daisy" streaming service later this year. I spoke to the guy who started MOG. He was brought on at Beats after the acquisition and quit after only 6 months. What does that tell you?

Standing alone, it doesn't tell me much of anything.  It's commonplace in corporate acquisitions for the acquirer to keep senior people from the target around for a relatively short period of time, to ensure a smooth transition, and then show them the door with a nice severance package.

Only time will tell if MOG's service quality is going to decline under new ownership.  I haven't noticed anything untoward yet.  Have you?

He wasn't shown the door. He quit. I was attempting to imply that he was not happy with the new owners (without just coming out and saying it. oops). Tyll is right on the mark.

MOG has been untouched since the acquisition as far as I know. BUT, Beats is launching their "Daisy" service later this year which will be built on the MOG backbone. The point is, I'm predicting that everyone's beloved MOG will be going away, replaced by "Daisy." We don't know if this will be better, worse, neither, or both.

Does anyone have another recommendation since MOG is getting shut down?

My choices are limited since I'm in Europe.

Spotify has pretty much been my go to streaming service.  SQ is OK, the catalog is endless.

I've recently been using Qobuz, which has true hi-res streaming.  Sound is great but it is a more limited catalog.
