Title: Thujone Grado Mod
Post by: Marvey on February 23, 2014, 07:38:33 AM
Looks like a cheap Alessandro + cup extension + GS/PS1000 pads with cloth lining on the inner side.

I had bad expectations, but actually not bad. Very surprising actually. Has a GS1000 kind of mid-bass kick, but not nearly to the crazy extent of the GS1000. Treble is a bit hot with characteristic Grado upper mids, but seems muted. No spikes - just a little hot. From high bass to midrange, sounds very flat. Works well with classical music.

I think Thujone just made a better GS/PS1000 alternative.

Grado MS1000 mod? HF-Link: http://www.head-fi.org/t/323271/alessandro-ms1000-and-ms-ultimate-diy-modding-56k-warning (http://www.head-fi.org/t/323271/alessandro-ms1000-and-ms-ultimate-diy-modding-56k-warning)
Tried it with different Grado/Magnums. Does not sound bad, esp. improves on the soundstage.

Yup. Pretty much a variation of it. I don't know if Thujone put any of his special sauce on it. At least the measurements here verify that the results are an improvement over the stock Grados.

Niiiice. Thanks again, Marv, and sorry about the technical difficulties.

Spot on, Strato, this is the MS1000. One of the darkest headphones I own, haha.

This is one of my first headphones in this bobby. A friend had a pair of MS1's back when I was listening to Bose and I fell in love with them. First open headphone. I ordered a pair and to my dismay, mine sounded nothing the same: bright, dry, and grainy. His (by manufacturing inconsistencies, 'burn-in', etc.) were warm and not fatiguing. Anyway, with the help of a coworker's skill with a lathe, I had the distancers made and spent he rest of the time trying to remove sibilance and boost bass (I'd like to think the ghetto fabric on the inside of the pad helps a bit with sibilance, haha).

Final mods:
-punch four bass holes on back of driver felt
-12mm (IIRC) distancers. Look at the MS1000 thread to see how they work
-3 vent holes at 120 deg around distancers (~2mm in diameter)
-felt glued to inside of distancers (will use adhesive felt next time)
-fabric glued on inside of GS1000 pads (will probably avoid next time)

So the 4 bass holes are pretty important huh? I've been running the MS1000 for quite a while without the bass holes and fabric on the pads, and it's pretty fatiguing, but still much better than just the stock MS1i. Not sure if I want to go with the holes and fabric (what's a safe glue for the pads, anyway?) or just sell it since I don't use it much anymore (and am looking to downsize anyway).

I wouldn't do the fabric mod, or at least I wouldn't use the method I used. The bass holes are great though.

Ahh, right, thanks. So it's either "resaleability" or "enjoyment". Hmm.
