Title: LCD3 #4 Distortion
Post by: Marvey on August 25, 2012, 07:46:28 PM
LCD3 #4 Distortion. I honestly thought distortion would be even lower in the bass, but honestly an excellent result. As usual, headphones at 90db SPL/A with white noise.

I wonder if the LCD2 r2 is even better.

I wonder how some of the old orthos compare, distortion-wise. I wonder if it is the reason they sound so smooth.

Vintage orthos have bass that is all over the board but it would be interesting to have some sense of comparison. I suspect we will see low distortion figures based on the general bass quality in general. The YHD series from yamaha would get my vote as a reasonable comparison. Eventhough the driver is a fraction of the size, it has relatively no damping, is open back and actually sounds pretty good in stock form. It just need a better ear seal than it has and I found the ideal solution thanks to RD..dB

ps those graphs are impressive,

The YHD-1 is very clean sounding & has a gorgeous mid-range.It is rolled of a bit too much on either end in the stock form though IMO.

Whitney's YH-100 compares favorably to the LCD3 in harmonic distortion. Actually a little better. The size of the YH-100 driver and proximity of it to the ear helps.
