I only have experience with headphones / IEMs and absolutely no experience with hi-end speakers.
Only speakers I've ever had were the Emotiva Stealth 8 and Airmotiv 4 active monitors.
I'm looking to get passive mini monitors for around 5K or less and plan to pair whatever speakers I get with the Schiit Ragnarok and Yggdrasil.
I haven't personally heard them, but the Joseph Audio Pulsar seems to get quite a bit of praise. Any thoughts?

$5K is a serious chunk of change for monitors. Why monitors specifically? Are you planning a nearfield setup with them placed on a desk? What's the room like? What are your placement options? Do you have or can you buy any treatments?
When it comes to big dollar speakers, there's a lot more involved than just what's "good" and what's "bad."

They have to be monitors because I'll be moving the speakers around quite a bit.
I'll be using them at home and in my college off campus apartment.
The speakers will be placed on sound anchor stands, not a desk.
I don't ever plan on using them in any exceptionally large room or in a room with treatments.

I'm afraid that 5K simply won't get you what you're looking for in today's competitive price-unconscious marketplace. May I suggest saving up a little extra and getting a pair of Magico speakers? I use a pair of their Q7s on my desk, but the Q1s are a decent entry-level alternative at 25K.

I have been looking for small room speakers also for the past few months, for your needs I think something like this ATC model and a flight case would be something to consider:

Personally at the top of my list currently are the Amphion Argon3, though I have not yet auditioned anything.

But for your case, I think powered, with balanced input (no need worry so much about cables length), and studio-use durability would be good features. And respected studio monitors I guess hold their resale value well due to all the folks with home project studios now..
I hope your thread gets some more comments... for somewhat under 25K, that is ;-)..
there are so many stand monitors available it really helps to get as much feedback as possible..

I have a set of Event Opal studio monitors (thanks for the suggestion DaveBSC) hooked up to my Rag/Ygg and I love them. Amazing tonality, imaging and they go LOUD without any distortion which will be fun for parties. :)
They are not small and weigh 60lbs each but as long as you get stands it will be all good. The only issue I have so far (untreated 8x13 room; calling GIK soon) is that there is no balance control and my image is off by about 2dB. Luckily you can change the input reference level on the front panel of the monitors which will get you pretty close without having to resort to software.

Ok. If wall mounts are out, (though mounting traps is no more difficult than hanging a picture frame) I would still suggest at least considering a couple of free standing traps placed at first reflection points. Otherwise you may want to consider why you are spending $5,000 on speakers as opposed to say $2,000, and what you are looking to get out of them. If a room is overly "live" and has terrible slap and flutter echo, you can throw all the money you want at speakers and that won't fix the problem. Just go to the typical audio show. Notice how most of the rooms sound like shit? That's why.

Usually you have to modify your room(or build a new room) for good speakers. The bigger the room the better.
Lots of early reflection will kill most of the high fidelity info. Bad imaging, uneven frequency response and lots of detail is lost.
It depends, you might get a half-decant result in a smaller room with some clever speaker placement. Depends on the room of course..
5k is probably an overkill if you dont plan to use them in bigger( treated) room in the future.

For speakers, room is almost 60 to 70% of the sound. Hardware is only about 30%, maybe 40%. This is after an extensive journey with speaker based audio experience. Quite the eye opening experience for me because hardware is so much fun to play around with. Room treatments, not so much.
Also, there is a balance...too much treatment can over deaden the room.
My suggestions, start with bass traps for the corners and cover your first reflection points.

Yep, and helpfully you can just plop tri-traps right down onto the floor in the room's corners, no need to mount anything, or even use stands. With tri-traps on the front wall corners and broadband traps at the first reflection points, over damping is very unlikely to be an issue. If the room is very narrow though and the speakers will be close to the side walls, I would recommend replacing the broadband traps there with skyline style diffusers instead.
