LFF’S MUSIC PICK OF THE MONTH
FEBRUARY 2015
RAE MORRIS – UNGAURDED (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00OQB0D2Y/ref=amb_link_185446947_3?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=hero-quick-promo&pf_rd_r=1FW8MGEQTTVK9PPP7NHK&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_p=573646667&pf_rd_i=B00ORVMTOI)

Yes, it’s another pop album. Yes, it’s another pop album about relationships. However, the style is much more different from the previous pop recommendation by Tov e Lo. Rae Morris’ debut album contains a 12 song collection that relate to romantic relationships as well as family relationships and even the relationship with Rae’s own inner self.
The album presents itself almost as a linear timeline for her life. While the album is great from start to finish, the winner for me is the third song “Closer”:

Why do I love that song so much?! I think it’s the best sampled use of “Return of the Mack” I have ever heard and in turn, it makes it all the more catchy for me. Once you hear that sample, it’s hard to forget Rae’s beautiful voice and the beat it follows. While I have played the entire album dozens of times, “Closer” is now on my most repeated singles list. So catchy!

If anything, I am very much looking forward to see what else Rae Morris puts out in the future because it’s very clear to me she has the writing talent and vocal talent to achieve great things.
The album barely got released at the end of January but certainly deserves to be heard the world over.  It has great production although it suffers from the occasion volume maximizing we have come to hate thanks to the loudness wars.  Still – it’s not horrible sound quality and I found it very enjoyable on headphones with the volume turned a bit down.

Highly recommended!

Great track Luis! I heard 'relationships' + 'Return of the Mack' and had to revisit this one. :P

First few songs from the album are promising. Thank you for the recommendation.

Her voice is like a young boy sometimes. With some "nose", and then smoothly transitions into a bird, and then into a Mariah Carey mode.  (e.g. Don't Go). Versatile.

This album still hasn't made it on to spotify for whatever reason, but I streamed some of it through the artist's soundcloud page yesterday.  Really good stuff.  Thanks for another great recommendation LFF!

The vocals make me think of Adele at times but the music is more upbeat and melodic, less congested and better recorded.

Amen to that!  I still regularly listen to this unheard of gem from his head-fi blog a million years ago - $4 with prime, http://www.amazon.com/Salute-Bunny-Berigan-Dedrick-All-Stars/dp/B0000001BU
