Title: 1st world problems
Post by: lm4der on June 03, 2015, 10:49:18 PM
My OTL tube amp is too hot and making me sweat but the air conditioner is too loud for critical listening with my open back headphones.

I'm having the same issue.  I shut off the air and opened the french doors to my patio, but now I hear someone loudly doing yardwork nearby.  It's intolerable.

That's why I have a two amps for my speaker rig. A tube amp for winter and a SS for summer.  :)p5  I still need a split unit AC unit for the room. Oh the pain, the pain.

My preamp is insufficient to route a signal to all of my amps. My DAC has 3 outputs, and the preamp has two, for a total of 4 amps. I've also run out of rack space, and some amps are living in a closet. I also don't have a routing solution for the output of the speaker amps, and I have to manually move my cables around.

2nd world problem:

The ZDSE I used to own ran too hot, but I didn't have air conditioning in my room let alone an electric fan. During summertime I would find my HD800 covered in sweat after an hour of listening or two.

True story.

Yes. And that is why your neighbors close all their blinds and endure the suffocating heat when your are working or listening to your rig.  Those poor bastards.  facepalm.  :)p13

It was there, I had to take it.  :)p7

I still need a split unit AC unit for the room. Oh the pain, the pain.

My window unit is dying.  I want to get a split system, but that will probably be too expensive and I'll end up with another noisy, but affordable, window unit...

I had a power outage a few days ago, and it messed up the USB controller on my external hard drive. I need to copy the data off, but I only have one spare, and need to wait for a sale to pick up two more externals. (The drive works fine when connected to my USB hub, but will disconnect intermittently otherwise)

They're not that expensive.

Check the prices, I think some have come down. It's installation that's the killer. Wish I could do it myself.

They're still >twice as much as a window unit with the same BTU rating and then there's installation on top of that.

Split unit was around $1000-1500 installed for us. Seems to be around $3k to add coils and a compressor for our whole house.

Just bought a bagel with cream cheese and when I get back to the office and pull it apart, most of the cream cheese is stuck to one side.  Day isn't starting off great.

That's awful! Reminds me of picking up a fresh pizza and taking it home through a few twisty corners and heavy braking zones only to find all the cheese and toppings slid over to one side of the pizza. I'm sure not even an emaciated Somali could bring themselves to eat such a culinary travesty.

Was that for one room? That's in the ballpark on an estimate a local HVAC guy gave me for our bedroom. (10 years ago he told me $15,000 to do the whole house.). I'm just sick of buying cheap window units that go bad after three years.

In an attempt to manage the sweating caused by the heat from my amp, I've taken to applying a frozen gel pack to the back of my neck, but these only remain cold for about 10-15 minutes, necessitating a periodic trek down 2 flights of stairs across the west wing of the house through several rooms and hallways to the kitchen freezer, and then back. Oh the humanity.

But the worst part is having to deal with a slave with one less hand.

Just got the final quote, $3800

Our furnace is new and has a blower (2 stage). Our ductwork is quite large for heat and doesn't need to be resized.

$3800 covers running ductwork to two bedrooms upstairs, evaporator coil install, and a 4.5 ton compressor install (he measured our need to be 4.4 tons).

Is there no "Stairway To Heaven" or "Road To Nowhere" to escape? If not you can only hope to meet undead MJ doing his "Thriller" thing. Otherwise you might meet the slaying "Angel Of Death." At best you find the doors and "The End" plays for eternity...

At least play "Hotel California" at 16 bit CD quality. If you dare to MP3 it an eagle from heaven might strike down on you and the Eagles of Death Metal will not be able to save you from checking in to compressed audio hell. Of course you can always pray to Them Crooked Vultures for winged rescue.

Did you knot the ponytail? Or is this a case of the ponytail having a will of its own and not liking the knot?

I just use one elastic hair band.  The problem is that my ponytail is longer than the Y split so it works it way out and over it.  I measured the cable, an it's only 9.5 inches from the ripstop to earcup.  My Lambdas have 15.5 inches to the ripstop.  I never have either problem with them.  Unlike the 650s they also have a physics based excuse for not being single entry.

That makes me wonder what HD650 drivers would sound like in a 558/598 frame...
