Title: Recommended Rockumentaries
Post by: shipsupt on May 13, 2012, 06:07:52 PM
Catching the epic 4 hour "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Runnin' Down a Dream" recently reminded me of how enjoyable a good rockumentary can be.

I found it fascinating to see the different styles each of the producers used.  I was impressed with the amount of time Petty took to try and record as close to live as they could with the whole band playing all at one time.  He sees recording as another instrument that must be learned and used to create the sound you're looking for to make a great alblum, which is totally different from sounding good in concert.

I'd rate it a must see.

Who's got the next recommendation?

For metal, there is the relatively new Ozzy documentary "God Bless Ozzy Osbourne", theres "Get Thrashed", "Metal: A Headbangers Journey", "Anvil! The Story Of Anvil", and many more. These are some of the ones I've seen within the past two years that I quite like.

It's not a ROCK-umentary, but I love the Herbie Hancock: Possibilities documentary and just bought the CD used.  Great disc too, I think.

I've been dreading watching "Meeting People is Easy" since I have heard it is NOT for Radiohead...will watch it and report back.

Definitely gonna see "No Direction Home".  Will surely kick off my Dylan phase properly...

the Pixies, loudQUIETloud was fascinating to me.  the band members relationships are just sooo dysfunctional... but they still tour.

that's a good one.

i've never been a fan of Pearl Jam, finding their music too self-important and humorless.  i'm annoyed by EV's over-inflected lame ass lyrics.  soooo last week i thought i would give "Twenty" a shot thinking that maybe i just needed some more intel on the band and their background to appreciate their music.  nope.  they really are self-important and humorless.

while not exactly an exhaustive document, it's fun to watch Fagen and Becker play around in the studio on the mixing board, dissecting the various tracks: Classic Albums: Steely Dan - Aja.  you can "Instant Queue" it on Netflix.

another Classic Albums: John Lennon - Plastic Ono Band: http://www.allmusic.com/album/classic-albums-plastic-ono-band-dvd-mw0001653386  (http://www.allmusic.com/album/classic-albums-plastic-ono-band-dvd-mw0001653386)

excellent interviews with Yoko, Ringo and Klaus V.  reminds me that i need to replace my vinyl copy with a decent digital.

Finally got a chance to watch this yesterday: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/searching_for_sugar_man/

Searching for Sugar Man -- a documentary about Rodriguez, an obscure artist that didn't have any commercial success in the US, but ended up having a HUGE following in South Africa. After being dropped from his label in the 70's, and then working as a hard laborer for a couple of decades, he discovers that he's a super star in South Africa. Really cool story.

Not rock, but I think Sigur Ros' "Heima" is a good documentary even for people who don't listen to Post Rock a lot. You get a good sense of how the environment shaped the band's sound. Watching it from the perspective of a city dweller, there was something almost otherwordly about the desolate landscapes and sparsely populated villages of Iceland. Everything was just so beautiful in a way I find difficult to explain.

The Story of Anvil... Fantastic. The Trash band that never made it big. But still they try. So much will, very inspiring.

Yesterday, I went to a screening for that rockumentary about The National, Mistaken For Strangers.

It turned out that the movie wasn't really about The National, but instead about the director's (Tom Berninger, who is the little brother of lead singer Matt Berninger) struggle with living in the huge shadow of his rock star older brother. Still very well done as a story about sibling relationships, young adults trying to navigate adult life, and a behind-the-scenes snapshot of a rock band. There were hilarious clips of Tom trying to fumble his way around this movie, and the band members doing all sorts of silly things that he directs them to do. I don't think anyone other than a family member could've gotten those types of shots. I haven't heard a movie crowd laugh as loudly in a movie for a while.

Fans of The National should definitely check it out, but I still think it's great for anyone who's not familiar with them.

Let There Be Rock!!! It's a documentary/concert film with AC/DC. It has Bon Scott on it too! :) I think he died 3 months after the documentary was taken or so. One of my favourite rockumentaries.

This has got to be one of THE best music documentaries I have seen in the past 10 years or so. Might not be full on Rock and Roll BUT it's a fascinating story and it's expertly presented while being completely entertaining.

Highly recommend you guys check this out.

I love Nirvana! So... is the documentary any good if it's dark as "heck"?

If you love Nirvana and like Kurt, you need to see it! But be prepared cause it actually made me kind of depressed... Includes audio and video that I don't think had ever come to light... I think. But yeah, the use of his words, notebooks, recordings and animation is dark-ish.
