Title: Lend an ear - Your latest vinyl purchases
Post by: Mr.Sneis on September 09, 2015, 07:03:54 PM
Not sure why this kind of thread doesn't exist yet in a sub forum titled "Vinyl Nutjob World".  I want to know about your latest vinyl pickups, new, old, or even from the chum dumpster.  Even better if you can tell me anything about the mastering and the pressing quality because I hate wasting money on crap records.  P.S. I better not catch you referring to vinyl as 'vinyls' or you get the plank!

Last week I was excited to snag Iron Maiden's Book of Souls.  It's got Chris Bellman's etching in the deadwax and is nicely pressed and flat (I believe pressed @ MPO for USA).  Mine has a tiny bit of crackle but I've dealt with worse; absolutely listenable on headphones.  The mastering is a little muddy, if you are a Maiden fan you probably notice it is par for the course.  I've heard a digital rip and found it too fatiguing. The Hoffman guys recommend flipping the loudness switch or  boosting the treble if your amp can do it.  The music is fantastic but not necessarily groundbreaking -  definitely not 80's level Maiden. We get longer tracks than usual so it's split into 3 LP's with nice wide grooves.  I recommend it!

I got a 70's re-release of the Archive Production Helmut Walcha organ recordings. They were in pristine condition, so it was really a steal at $30 for the full set. I'll need to check the vinyl to see who mastered them and such, but it was much better than the cd release from last year.

For Jazz fans (click me!) (http://www.samrecords.fr/?product=chet-baker-quartet-1956-4) is the best record purchase I have made in the past couple years.

Yeah I know it's pretty expensive but IMO this one was worth every penny.  Amazing album for a late night or when you just want to chill.

Edit: Made the link real obvious.

Any recommendations for classic metal / hard rock? Good recordings please.

I think we may have a syntax error.  Do tell, which album?

Lately I've been spinning the new A Forest Of Stars, Barren Earth, and Subterranean Masquerade. The latter in particular is a really well produced record, but all have dedicated, dynamic vinyl masters.

This one is actually interesting to me because a lot of the old but good music was recorded under budget and technology restraints, and then when you do some deeper digging you end up learning about the weird mastering moves that were en vogue at the time; scooped mids, lack of bass, boosted top end etc.  The cutting/mastering engineer may or may not have had great material to start with.  For the old Maiden albums at least they were cut by Wally Traugott who IMO did an excellent job.  Lately I've been hunting down old Black Sabbath records but it quickly gets complicated trying to find the best masters.

For the first four albums, the original UK Vertigo swirls are definitely the best... but mint copies are BIG bucks, $200+. I'm definitely hanging on to mine. I also have the 1974 Paranoid Quadraphonic, which is sweet even in stereo which is the only way I can play it. The mix is totally different from the 1970 stereo LP.

I was thinking more along the lines of Queensryche, BOC, Dio, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest instead of pseudo-intellectual/D&D/historical analysis/Neal Peart Lyrics and Rush's technically mastery of 98 pieces of instruments. Don't get me wrong, I like Rush. Just looking for something well recorded more along the lines Ozzy's boneyard (minus Rainbow).

Apologies, I inlined the link and just realized it's not obvious with all browsers.  Check again, I fixed it. :)

You're right. Was just listening to that last night so figured I'd throw it out there. More apt for listening thread.

I've got my eye on some Blue Note reissues, mastered by Kevin Gray (whose work I've enjoyed greatly on CD). Just waiting on my pay day...

You can pick up an '88 original Operation: Mindcrime in mint condition for around $15 or less. Tons of copies floating around and not huge demand. Sounds great, definitely worth having.

Those Music Matters remasters are so damn good. I have really slowed down my record buying because I'm simply running out of storage space, but I've kept my subscription with them active. The latest ones - Larry Young's Unity and Jackie McLean's  Right Now -- just came out last week too.

Today I snagged Deep Purple - Fireball.  Don't let the stupid cover fool you, this is a damn fine album.  I went for a $6 (VGish) Harvest EMI UK copy but you should be able to find a NM USA WB Green label for less (the pukey WB green labels are generally pretty good - make sure no barcode on the back!).
