Title: Post Your Computer Build
Post by: velvetx on September 21, 2015, 11:44:45 PM
Figured I would start this thread as I have been building PCs as a hobby for most of my life.  Whether you are a beginner or veteran to me cable management is the most important thing when doing a build.  It makes things cooler and it looks much better.  Anyway onto the build.  Pictures are most welcome.

Cooling: Basic Bitch intel cooler

Peripherals
Keyboard: Ducky Zeros w/ Cherry MX Brown switches
Mouse: Steel Series Sensei RAW
Monitor: Samsung 4k w/ 1ms response time

I've got a rebuild/upgrade that I'm planning out, I'll probably post some pictures when I start that.
I've been considering trashing the Thor and getting a 900D, how's it worked out for you velvetx?

The 900D is a beast.  Honestly there is so much room.  Great cable management.  Great case for water cooling.

I went from an 800D to a 900D to a lian-li Q25 with drive cages removed. It's tiny and was easy to drill out unnecessary internals. The top is just the right size for my custom loop. I no longer run 2 3x120mm radiators anymore so I prefer the smaller form factor quite a bit.

As for internals:

P8Z77-I deluxe
3770k @ 5 GHz on a custom loop
32GB (2x16GB) DDR3
512GB Samsung 830 (3 years still going strong)
580 lighting XE (was running a 980 ti, don't game so I sold it)

I'm using a topre realforce that I traded some older keyboards for and find it fantastic

I had 3 Korean 1440p displays. I sold two recently since one is more than enough for my needs.

In 1986/87, my mom worked at AMD and one of her work buddies came over and showed me how to put together a PC. Years later, he helped me overclock the family 486 DX2/66 I had built. Now I don't have time to futz with computers much, but when I do I make liberal use of heat shrink tubing, my soldering iron, various hole saws with my makita 18V, and a dremel. I abhor windows and flashy LEDs.

Video Card: Asus GTX970 4GB
Your picture shows a Gigabyte Windforce GPU. Typo?

PSU: Can't remember, but it's excessive and 80 PLUS Platinum
Cooling: Basic Bitch intel cooler
This amused me greatly. Platinum PSU paired with a 4790K with a stock cooler.

And I personally think the 900D to be way too much case. I have a Fractal Design Define R5 with air cooling, and it's heavy enough to be cumbersome to move.

As for my own build, the internals are as follows:
Intel i7-5820K @ 4.3 GHz
Asus X99-A
Crucial Ballistix Sport 4x4GB DDR4-2400
Asus Strix GeForce GTX 970
EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2
Crucial MX100 256GB and 2x Seagate Barracuda 2TB in RAID 1

I use a pair of Dell P2414H 1080p monitors, a Razer Taipan, and a Razer Blackwidow TE Stealth keyboard with O-rings, and Simple Audio Listen speakers.

Just built a budget box for myself:

CORSAIR CX series CX500 500W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply
1 x Rosewill Computer Case - CHALLENGER - ATX Mid Tower
Intel Core i3-4160 Haswell Dual-Core 3.6 GHz LGA 1150 54W BX80646I34160 Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 4400
ASUS DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS Black SATA 24X DVD Burner
Western Digital WD Green WD10EZRX 1TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache
ASUS H97I-PLUS LGA 1150 Intel H97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Mini ITX Intel Motherboard
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
Crucial BX100 2.5" 250GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

With my near worthless GT610.

I plan to get a 750ti eventually with a larger storage drive. Everything else I'm pretty happy with for now.

i7-4770 - OCed
CORSAIR Hydro Series H100i
Nvidia GTX 780
Couple Samsung 840 Pros

Modular 80 plus plat psu, can't remember the model.
WASD keyboard
1080p ips monitor

Quiet, cool and fast. I see no reason to upgrade anything.

Here's mine. Haven't bought or assembled anything yet.

http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=28174065

~$1850

Took out the 2TB RE4 for now since the 480GB variant of the 730 was actually cheaper than the 240GB variant (???) and I won't need that extra storage for a while yet.

Had a Formula VII in there but it went OoS. I think ASUS already discontinued the Z97 series since Skylake is out. Assholes.

Using a 1000W Platinum Seasonic that's in my current build for the PSU. I'd buy a new one so I could resell my current build, but I'd rather not do another 3 RMAs for this fucker.

Debating replacing the 730 with an M.2 drive.

I'll take pictures of my current build in a bit. Its as follows:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1100T @ 3.31GHz
GPU: MSi GTX-550Ti Superclocked "Cyclone II"
RAM: 8GB G.Skill Value Series 2600MHz
CPU cooler: Noctua C15
PSU: 1000W Platinum Seasonic
Case: Lian-Li PC-B25F

Monitor: Eizo Foris FS2434 (IPS, 0ms input delay)
Keyboard: DAS 4 Ultimate
Mouse: Razer DeathAdder Black Edition
Second monitor: some old eMachines thing
Speakers: PowerWoofer OG-5050 (not too bad sounding, modded with a crossover and piezo horn tweeters)

replacing the second monitor with a Yiynova MSP19U+ soon, keeping the same perhipherals for next build

I had plans for something with more power requirements, and then Rag/Yggy/MisterRoger's Mainline happened. I was going to make a custom water cooling rig, including the graphics card(s). Probably wouldn't have been worth it, but on the bright side that PSU will last forever. It's going to be part of future builds for years.

You can still buy z97 boards from Newegg just because Asus may have stopped making them doesn't mean there aren't any for sale haha.

I built this last year August/September (2014), recently changed the Graphics Card from a Zotac 750Ti to a GTX 980, added two more sticks of the same RAM, got another SSD (for Win10).
Also rewired and changed some of the fans.

Intel Core i7 4790K
Asus Maximus VII Formula (Z97)
Corsair Dominator Platinum 32GB DDR-3 1866Mhz
Gigabyte G1 GTX 980

Samsung SSD 850 Pro 256GB
Samsung SSD 840 Pro 256GB
WD Black 6TB x 2

ASUS Dual-Band Wireless-AC1900 PCE-AC68 (did not like the built-in one on the Motherboard)

Corsair Obsidian 750D Case
Corsair AX1200 (Gold single rail one) PSU
Corsair H100i CPU Water Cooler

2 x Scythe S-Flex 120mm on bottom intake
2 x Gentle Typhoon AP-29 with PWN Mod on the radiator
3 x Cougar CFD140 Orange/Red LED for front intake and back exhaust

Monitor: BenQ XL2420Z

Speakers: Razer Mako 2.1

Keyboard: Filco Majestouch 2 Ninja Full Size

Mouse: MadCatz M.M.O.7 Orange/Black with G.L.I.D.E.7 Surface

Webcam: Logitech C920

Microphone: Samson Meteor Chrome

Edit: Technically not mine, but my wife and I built a gaming PC for my her birthday this month:

Intel Core i5 6600K (she liked the box)
Asus Maximus VIII Hero (Z170)
Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB DDR-4 2800Mhz (pretty lights!)
Zotac GTX 750Ti
Samsung SSD 850 Pro 512GB
ASUS Dual-Band Wireless-AC1900 PCE-AC68
Corsair Obsidian 450D Case
Corsair AX860i PSU
Corsair H100i CPU Water Cooler
3 x Cougar CFD140 Green LED for front intake and bottom intake
1 x Cougar CFD120 Green LED for back exhaust
2 x Corsair SP-120 for the Radiator

Since this was purchased all in the span of 4 days, I have an idea of pricing regarding how much this cost: $1300-$1400.
She doesn't like the look of the Zotac, so her first upgrade is probably going to be the graphics card.

uh yes but the Formula is now out of stock, which is what I wanted and what I had in there

ASUS discontinued it, so now I cant get one unless I pay $700 to a scalper on amazon

hence the Hero instead

Asus didn't discontinue it. It was just a very limited production run. I got one of the first three to come to Canada back in August 2014 :)

Built my current machine in the Summer of 2012:
CPU - Intel i7 3770k Ivy Bridge OC'd 4.3GHz
CPU cooler - Noctua DH-14
GPU - eVGA nVidia 670 GTX SuperClock 4GB
MOBO - asRock Z77 Extreme9
Monitor - BenQ XL2420G (1080p 24" GSync, bought in 20142015)
RAM - 1.25 V G.Skill Sniper 2 x 8GB (CAS9 etc etc etc)
SSD - OCZ Vertex 4 128 GB
SteamDrive - 4TB Hitachi (bought in 2013)
Case - Rosewill Thor V2 White
Keyboard - Corsair K70 (Cherry Red)
Mouse - Logitech G502 Proteus
Mousing Surface - Corsair MMM600
PSU - Seasonic Platinum 760W (maybe 860W, can't remember)

Future Upgrades - nVidia Pascal-based GPU, Soundblaster Z
EDIT: Cost about $2200 without monitor back in 2012. Probably get similar performance at about $1500 now mainly from the better GPU and lower SSD costs. If you like strategy and simulator games, also get a benefit from the newer CPUs. PSU was also overkill.

My Linux Server
CPU - i3770
MOBO - asRock Z77 Extreme6
RAM - Same as above
SSD - 64GB Samsung 830
HDD - 2 x 4TB Raid10, plus 12TB external storage array
Case - Silverstone Fortress FT02B (no window)

By nature, limited production runs have a ... wait for it ... limited number of products produced. And yes, discontinued now. It just wasn't because of Z170.

It's a few years old now...

Gigabyte  GA-890GPA-UD3H + AMD Phenom II x4 995
Mere 4Gb RAM.
Graphics: onboard. Nothing else needed, I don't game or movie.
Antec P183 case.

What I tell people: Playing audio does not need much resource, my most trouble-free audio machine was a Pentium. You do not need heat producing power and all the fans that cool it.

What I tell myself: hey, it's my only PC, it's a general purpose machine and one day I might want to edit video or ...something.

What I do: mostly, surf the net and listen to music.

I bought an Antec power supply with the case. Post-purchase, I found, from a review, that it measured very well for electrical and physical noise. Happy coincidence. However, my hobby then became swapping out fans. I recommend Nokia Whoops, Noctua! and have a big Noctua CPU cooler.

The antec PSU died a few weeks ago. The replacement is not as quiet.

None of this is ever going to be upgraded, and will be replaced only as and when it fails. Who knows, though: I might end up, one day, with a tiny, fanless, silent little box  :)p4

Operating system: Linux, currently  Mint 17.1, MATE desktop, KXStudio (minimal install, not all the tools, bells whistles etc) looks after the audio tuning (It is a pain when you can hear the mouse pointer moving) and provides JACK.

Audio path: sometimes ALSA direct, sometimes JACK->ALSA

" I recommend Nokia..." What was I smoking? I meant Noctua, of course  :&  :&  :&

- RAM: G.Skill TridentX DDR3 2400 2x8GB
- Video Card: Galax GTX 970 HOF
- SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 256GB
- HD: HGST Deskstar NAS 7200RPM 4TB
- XXD: Two externals (WD and Seagate) and an OCZ Agility 3 doing ShadowPlay duty
- PSU: Corsair HX850
- Case: Corsair Carbide 400R
- CPU Cooler: Enermax Liqtech 240
- Keyboard: Cooler Master QuickFire Rapid Cherry MX Brown and Kinesis Low Force Keypad (numpad with Cherry MX Brown)
- Sound Card: Sound Blaster ZxR for gaming
- Mouse: Razer DeathAdder Chroma on Razer Scarab mat
- Networking: Asus AC68 (router) and AC68 PCIe + Zyxel Powerline Ethernet
- Monitor: Asus 24" LED (2ms)
- Fans: Lots! My favorites are the Cougar Vortex but they only sit 3 optimal spots for my case. Radiator fans need higher static pressure.

For a music listener, the advantages of physical silence are pretty obvious, and I have confessed to buying a general-purpose PC that would fry without its fans. One alternative is the tiny box approach (or even one of those Pi or similar things) but for those who feel that a computer should look like some sort of server, there is Nofan (http://www.nofancomputer.com/eng/).  I love those heatsinks. Not sure if they cope well with 30C ambient, though.

What case is that?

And any idea for the smallest nice case that would fit a full sized cpu cooler and a full sized graphics card? No need for any optical drives and only one ssd would be inside. Ever since I got the NAS storage in my machine for anything but games is long needed. Want something smaller and sleeker.

You know what you have to do to get those temps down...

I know :'( I've been putting it off because I don't wanna mess it up as I need the comp to do freelance work. Should be wrapping up projects soon. I'll just need to be super careful.

Here's a quick solution to try. Install Intel Extreme Tuning Utility, directly download from Intel site. Turn off adaptive voltage, and set your voltage to 1.2V for Core. You'll notice an immediate temperature drop during loads. For some reason Z87 and Z97 Motherboards are far too liberal with letting voltage flow into the CPU cores during load.

If you are against delidding you can also try this stuff trust me it works.

Will this hold if I switch to my Mac partition or is it only a Windows tuning utility?

Thanks. From reading the thread you posted it sounds like the real problem is the adhesive. All the tests I've seen with different thermal pastes show that if you take out the total junk you're talking a few degrees Celsius difference at best.

Probably mentioned elsewhere in this thread - and I know it's old..... BUT based on how many forums I STILL see this being talked about (due to 4709k now) and the misinfo being spread - I figure I'll mention it here.

Your temp drop isn't due to new tim. Don't you wish you could get 20c from changing some TIM? Lol. Use some common sense. The stuff causes pennies per application for intel and they would actually have to WORK to find something bad enough to allow a 20c improvement. A little common sense goes a long way.

The bad temps (and good post delidding) while they may be helped marginally due to TIM (assuming you use something exceptional) is largely due to the decreasing of the space and increasing of the pressure between the IHS and the die. The black adhesive you removed, is the root cause of the bad temps. Their is simply too much of it/is put on too thick and doesn't allow good contact between the IHS and die. I'd be willing to bet that a delid using no TIM at all wipe afford better temps than stock.

Geez. I imagine those are low-RPM and inaudible? Neat.

Used 140mm Helix'es on 1000 rpm, super silent, and a D5 pump at 60%, also very silent.

What case is that?

NCASE M1 v4. Super expensive, super small, very sleek. You can fit a 13cm cooler without side fans, and 10,5 with

No 1000rpm fan is inaudible in a quiet room. Fans start becoming audible around 700-800rpm.

Have you tried the Yate Loon Fans?

They are really really quiet.

I run my noctua NF-A15 and S12A fans are ~400 rpm. I'm very happy with them and I get exceptional temps with my open test bench.

I've tried a lot of fans in the past. I'm as picky about noise as they come.

I'm feeling bad about the amount of noise coming from my box just now. I finished listening to music, I haven't got the AC on, it's 4.00am, and silence would have been nice. Fans running at 800-plus. But, yes, no AC, and it is over 30C ambient.
