I've been going crazy the last couple weeks as I haven't been able to listen to music, so I thought I'd put a list together of some favorite albums off the top of my head. This first list is from 1960-Present day, focusing on Rock and Folk. It's totally personal preference (which is why you won't see any dylan or heavy metal on it.) I'm always trying to find new music (or old hidden gems) so thought we could have a list-off, if you will. I'll try to put some together with some Classical and Jazz (my predominant genres) when I get the chance.
Here Goes:

I love threads like this! It gives me albums to check out as well.
Tons of stuff on this list would make my list as well. I'll try to post something in the next couple of days.
(Sorry all your links are broken. Doesn't look like album art exchange doesn't allow direct linking.)
-
Think I fixed all the broken links - I think I "copied link address" instead of the image url for a few of them - I only spent 15-20 minutes on my lunch break on this so it might not be perfect.
Edit - that's really weird. This all shows up on my work computer (windows 7/chrome) but won't show on any browser on my mac. Guess I'll find non-album art exchange artwork.
-
Excellent list! With enough entries I like to go through and find the threads connecting all the albums, guess which came first.
It'll be fun compiling a list like this, though I'll probably go for a less rigorous goal of something like 50 albums.
-
RHCP - Blood Sugar Sex Magick
RATM - self titled
Those are in my opinion some of the best albums of all time.
The Spawn soundtrack too!
But I listen to Jazz mainly now.
-
I know many might disagree with me, but I think Opeth's "Heritage" (2011) is my favorite album. I'm a huge fan of their older work, but "Heritage" blew me away. The shift in sound/genre from their previous work is on par with when Radiohead switched to "Kid A". And arguably just as amazing.
For anyone interested in progressive rock/metal (no growling/screaming in this album) with a mix of jazz fusion and 60s-70s progressive rock/metal (think King Crimson), I would highly recommend it. Mikael Akerfeldt is an excellent musician, and Opeth does go far beyond "metal". Though, if you don't mind heavier metal, their older albums are excellent. I've even seen people who hate metal enjoy them.
I'm also really enjoying Porcupine Tree so far ("In Absentia" through their latest, "The Incident").
Speaking of Radiohead, "In Rainbows" is another favorite of mine, though I really like everything they've done since (and including) "Kid A".
-
I like a thread like this, especially given the nature of this site. I hope everyone would post something. That way we would know their premises better and what kind of music people use to evaluate gear. Still interested to know what Purrin or RD pull out to hear the ringing right away :)
Think I'm going to post stuff in steps...

Cool, nothing wrong with liking popular music. I totally forgot about this thread- I'm going to update it with some images and try to find more lists to cull through some more albums I'm enjoying. Too many terabytes though - maybe I'll do a week-by-week of some albums that I'm enjoying.

Wow, never seen Pablo Honey mentioned in a favorites list. Power to your preferences.
Just wrote out a quick jazz list - these were all albums off the top of my head that I've spun in the last month. Tried not to use too much of any one artist. In case you couldn't tell, I'm a hardbop and post-bop junkie.

Awesome list Tari. I'm especially excited about the first list because I like almost every album that I know on there, and love many of them. And the few I don't like are albums that most people with similar taste to mine like (Animal Collective for example, which while I have enjoyed a few times in the right situation, I'm not sure why I've never come around to, maybe I will someday). But there are many albums, mostly from the 70's, which I either don't have or don't know. Very cool! I'm gong to proceed to find as many as I can and I'm sure I'll find a lot of new music I like in there. :-)
I started making a list and decided it was going to take way more time than I could put into it. But I'll try to put one together at some point. Probably not a top 100 list like this, I have no idea how you did that. More likely just a list of my favorite albums.
-
I'm in the same boat -- I started making a list and then realized what a monumental task it is. I know the list isn't anything formal, but I still have a hard time considering what to include and exclude on my personal favorites.
I have a list of my favorite jazz, and hip-hop albums so far, working my way through rock, electronic, blues, etc. folders. Then to consolidate them.
Tari and I have very similar jazz tastes though. Mid-50's to mid-60's Hard Bop is right in my wheel house.
I haven't tackled a lot of the classic rock canon yet though -- especially anything pre-90's other than the really big names (Beatles, Hendrix, Stones, Pink Floyd, King Crimson). This will give me a good reference point once I start exploring that area more.
-
Lists are hard, but fun. Ultimately, they end up being really productive for me as I get a chance to spin all my favorites again. Still, I feel like I'm missing so many good albums. Just looked at my rock list and I didn't have Millennium's Begin Here or Sagittarius' Present Tense, which would both go in my top 30 easy. Oh well.
Working on a vocal jazz list right now, don't know if I can reliably name 100 favorites, but I have at least 50 that are "up there" for me.
I love finding people with similar tastes because 90% of the time that's how I discover new music that I really enjoy.

If you don't have "Moss" on your vocal jazz list, I'm gonna wonder about you. :)p8

I got most of your rock recommendations Tari (the ones I didn't have already, mostly 60;/70's stuff). it will take time to soak them in. Right now I'm really digging Talk Talk.
-
Didn't know if it actually helped anyone out, good you're getting something out of it. If you find yourself digging Talk Talk, The Colour of Spring and Laughingstock are the other two albums of theirs I would get. I do love Spirit of Eden the most though.
-
I love Talk Talk. I've been a fan ever since I first heard Natural History. Since then, I got all the CDs and like the New Wave stuff more than the post rock albums of theirs (which I also like).
-
I probably will get their other albums. They've got a great sound.
-
One of the Disadvantages to have been born in the 80s is that you have to do a lot of research to find good music.
A week ago when I purchased a 10cd collection from Chicago (Full albums through 69 to 78) I've been thinking: "Why hasn't anyone ever told me about Chicago?!?!?"
Anyways, Through 4 fist albums and I'm finding some really groovy stuff. "Rock n roll with horns" is a good description.

-
Lots of great stuff here. I have a lot of these albums on heavy rotation, especially during workouts. Hey, I still haven't added artwork to my second list so no pressure. I can't believe I left out heavy weather now that you mentioned it.
-
@anetode -- Awesome! Some really good stuff on there.
Don't worry about the album art. The artwork is great (I tag all my files with album art because I like to associate the album to a visual), but browsing your list is MUCH easier on my phone.

This thread keeps getting better and better...
-
good stuff.. haven't seen anyone mention AC/DC, motorhead or even MIchael Jackson (okay one mention)..
but this is great..keep going..am stealing all your lists.. :)p2
