Title: New Releases For 2014
Post by: 6 on January 21, 2014, 06:22:44 PM
What have you just bought? What are you looking forward to? Suggestions for other pirates?
No list limit. No post limit. Re-issues are fine. If you like it and it's out this year then post it and if you didn't like something tell us why.

It's already a good year for Americana/bluegrass/folk/country: Rosanne Cash and Mary Chapin Carpenter last week, and Blue Highway today.

I found the new Springsteen album to be his best work since "The Ghost of Tom Joad."

A new Pat Metheny Unity Band album is due out shortly (maybe today, in fact).

Later in the year, the Pacifica Quartet and Marc-Andre Hamelin are supposed to record the Ornstein Piano Quintet which was the highlight of their Fall 2013 concert tour.

Hopefully we will get more Haydn concertos from Hamelin and Les Violons du Roi; the first volume was awesome.

Ordered, thanks!  One friend has told me several times that once you get into Finn, he's so great...look past the pop sound and the lyrics are so intense.  But- this one doesn't sound like such pop.  Hope the album carries that tone.

Rumor has it that Toll will be releasing a new album in 2014, I hope the rumor is true. Their last album was in 2006 so it' been a long time coming! I am really looking forward to it!

The advance single sounds substantially influenced by Sigur Rós's "Viðrar vel til loftárása" (trans. "Good Weather for an Airstrike) off of their 1999 album Ágætis byrjun. Even the name of the track seems to hint at the connection. If the rest of the album sounds anything like it (i.e. heavily orchestrated Post-Rock), it won't sound very much like Neil Finn's stock sound - which your friend described very accurately.

I found the new Springsteen album to be his best work since "The Ghost of Tom Joad."

High praise. I'm going to have to pick it up off of this recommendation alone.

I'm listening to the new release from Actress Ghettoville

It's sounds like it was recorded at 96Kbps. I feel sorry for anyone buying this on the triple LP vinyl. They'll be checking their carts thinking they're damaged. I know, it's meant to be minimal and lo-fi, but does it have to be meh.
In a recent press release Actress stated...

Ghettoville is the bleached out and black tinted conclusion of the Actress image.

Where the demands of writing caught the artist slumped and reclined, devoid of any soul, acutely aware of the simulated prism that required breakout.

Four albums in and the notes and compositions no longer contain decipherable language.

The scripts now carry tears, the world has returned to a flattened state, and out through that window, the birds look back into the cage they once inhabited.

Spitting flames behind a white wall of silence.

The machines have turned to stone, data reads like an obituary to its user.

A fix is no longer a release, it's a brittle curse. Zero satisfaction, no teeth, pseudo artists running rampant, but the path continues.

R.I.P Music 2014.

Actress

I don't think I'm hip enough for this album.

Edit: I know what the problem is for me. As Darren Cunningham (Actress) said in his press release, it's "Devoid of any soul".

I'm not too familiar with Neil Finn's solo work. Crowded House and Split Enz were amazing bands though. You're in for a treat if you're exploring this man's work for the first time.

I was listening to this last night (released in 2010, sorry for the slight derail). Amazing compilation of covers from female Aussie and NZ musicians. The special edition has a second disc with the original versions of songs. Both discs are rad.

The third volume of Columbia/Legacy's Miles Davis "bootleg" series will be out in late March.  Four CDs of the complete June 1970 Fillmore East shows.  This could be pretty special.

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings: Give the People What They Want

I am absolutely loving this retro, R'n'B, funky, soul, motown... Ah, forget trying to put a label on it, I just want to queue it up and dance around the room!  Great to see Jones bounce back from a fight with cancer last year.  This should have been a 2013 release, but was delayed.  This is the first time I've checked her/their stuff out and I'm totally digging it.

The only downside to this album for me is that it's got a few tracks (like You'll be Lonely) that are mixed with some pretty heavy mono going on.  Think most of the band in your left ear and just the horns in your right.  I've always been uncomfortable with a heavy mono mix like this on headphones.  Some heavy cross feed is helping, but I simply prefer listening to this one from speakers, which is actually a blessing, as it makes the aforementioned dancing much easier!

Put Jone's killer pipes on top of this super tight band and you've got a good recipe for fun.  Keep this one on the ready for your next party!   :)p1

Get the Blessing - Lope and Antilope
(http://www.godisinthetvzine.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/797537119922-195x195.jpg)

A brilliant jazz rock release. Purely instrumental and largely improvised. The whole album just seems flow together as a whole.  As a budding jazz fan, this genre-fusion is easy for me to digest and makes the leap to free jazz more accessible.

I'd recommend grabbing it and any of their other three releases.

Actress - Ghettoville

I rarely visit Pitchfork these days, but out of curiosity I checked the score for Actress's Ghettoville. They gave it a 6.7. So no, they don't exactly love it.

Not sure how I feel about it as a whole. It's definitely far less engaging than Splazsh to which it's supposed to be a direct sequel, and the recording quality is far into the shit-zone even compared to a lot of 'garbage-fi' and 'shitgazer' stuff. What strikes me the most about it is how lethargic it sounds compared to the usual bouncy skitterscapes of his past stuff. Rather than a lot of small squiggles and plankton (to borrow something from Marv's lexicon...), everything gets compressed into a single plane and is presented in broad patterns. Everything is narrow band and forced down a tunnel, like looking through a telescope the wrong way. It's evident from the artist's own words that this album is meant to present the bombed out remains of a genre.

If there's anything to be said for the album it's the vibes it gives off however, definite throw-backs to 80s and 90s underground dance floors, echoes of acid house and Detroit techno, horror vogue ghetto synths and Screw (see "Rap" with its play-on-words refrain and "Rule"). It's the type of album that surveys the artistic landscape that spawned it, much like last year's With Love. In that case, the entirety of underground techno was put through a filter of Zomby's sensibilities, and it ended up being a love letter of sorts to DJs, providing skeletal tracks for other artists to remix. Though it's similarly barren, Ghettoville is far and away more self referential. It's not so much a love letter as it's the barely decipherable torn pages of a notebook, and rather than celebrate its influences it celebrates their smoldering wreckage. More high concept than enjoyable listen, though I can still appreciate that.

Sunn O))) and Ulver - Terrestrials

Side note: The volume on the CD is quite low; I'm having to turn it up quite a bit.

This material seems like a direct continuation of their recordings from Monoliths & Dimensions, though it ventures even further into the symphonic realms that accentuated their last full length. Opener "Let There Be Light" sounds like a much fuller, more lush take from the White sessions. Its jazzy undertones are especially nice and evoke their collaboration with Nurse With Wound which remains a favorite of mine (The Iron Soul of Nothing). It builds into a percussive and horn laden crescendo, and then the ominous second track "Western Horn" comes in like a rolling cloud bank of drones, jangling guitars and---what sounds like---mandolins.

The centerpiece though is the melancholy third track, "Eternal Return," which is the most distinctly Ulver-ish moment of the album. The mournful strings and bells and overall tone come across like Sunn O)))'s take on funeral doom. Eventually this calms and some synth lines pick up, providing a backdrop for some Tears For Fears-esque vocals courtesy Ulver. The delivery of these vocals is perhaps the only real fumble for the collaboration, and I imagine some Sunn-fans cringing, but in a way it makes the experience all the better for me; it shoots for genuine emotion---even if it's overwrought---and that's what makes traditional funeral doom (Candlemass, et al.) what it is. Only it's here on an abstract Sunn O))) album. The track draws to a close with more mandolins playing a really great minor coda.

As a whole, Terrestrials is a great addition to both band's catalogs. To me it evokes some kind of hyperdimensional funeral procession, complete with tesseracts as grave markers. Whatever your mental imagery though, this is definitely Sunn's more abstract and adventurous side, and this is precisely the side of theirs I like most. Even though they never go into major riff mode, Terrestrials manages to sound very heavy nonetheless.

I also highly recommend checking out Ulver's latest material, namely their Messe I.X-VI.X release which has the same intriguing combination of instrumental passages and electronics as the final moments of Terrestrials.

Dum Dum Girls - Too True

For those of you unfamiliar with Dum Dum Girls, they're part of a new wave of girl-fronted garage rock groups including Vivian Girls and Best Coast. For their latest album, their style has shifted somewhat into more stargazing pop rock, more dreamy and whispering. They sound a lot like School of Seven Bells at times. Which isn't a bad thing. However I wish they split the difference a bit more with their older style as they did on their most recent EP, End of Daze. As it stand the tracks end up running together a bit when you listen all the way through rather than small doses, something I often find to be the case with dreampop bands (even the best of them like Beach House). I suppose I find myself asking if I really want yet another dreampop practitioner on rotation. So yeah, I hope Dum Dum Girls continues to explore their sound and don't sit still in this new phase for long. The tracks on this album are very solid and well executed, but perhaps ever-so-slightly devoid of spark for me despite lead singer Dee Dee's energy.

Warpaint - Warpaint

Experimental rock group Warpaint has released some really fantastic tracks, though I can't help but feel like their albums as a whole are a bit inconsistent and don't sustain that creative energy all the way through. Their self-titled album is perhaps the most ambitious of their releases so far with twelve tracks clocking in at nearly an hour. Once again though , I find myself struggling to sit through the entirety of it from start to finish, however there are some real downtempo gems throughout. This album is a definite slow burner. You need to give it time.

"Love Is To Die" is minimal yet propulsive, a brooding indie ballad. "Hi" sounds like Portishead and PJ Harvey getting into a spat. "Biggy" shimmers in synthetic loops and clouds of droning ambience. "Disco // Very" is an off kilter dance floor jangle with a groovy beat and refrain, complete with crazy lyrics. Meanwhile "Go In" drifts along with echoplex Hurdy-Gurdy Man style vocals.

Kinda like a shot of high proof alcohol. Best in small doses.

Mogwai - Rave Tapes

I can't help but love Mogwai. From their first monolithic slab of brilliance Young Team which is in some ways still my favorite thing they've ever done, to their breakout hit Happy Songs For Happy People, to their more recent albums like the brilliantly named Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will ... I love it all. For their latest full length, Rave Tapes, the band is decidedly less blown-out than on the aforementioned Hardcore, though they sound just as anthemic as always and manage to encapsulate much of that post rock majesty in bite sized pieces.

Highlights for me include the heavy synth rockers "Simon Ferocious" and "Remurdered," the soaring "Hexon Bogon" and "Blues Hour," and the lovely, sprawling "No Medicine For Regret." My two favorite tracks however are "Repelish" which features dive-on-in guitars a really great vocal sample of someone ranting about satanic messages in Zep's Stairway to Heaven, as well as album closer "The Lord Is Out Of Control" which sounds like a Thrones composition with its angelic vocoder hymnals and hard pounding programmed drumming.

It's more of a slow grower compared to Hardcore, and the more I listen the more it endears itself.

Beastmilk - Climax

This was actually released last year, but it fell through the cracks for me, and I've only just now discovered it. Had I done so sooner it would have made my 'best of' list last year f'sho.

Really propulsive goth punk rock, featuring moody---but not too whiny and not too overwrought---vocals, fantastic heavy hitting rhythm, and frantic guitars. Reminds me of Veil Veil Vanish to a degree, but it has more angular riffing and minor key melodies, almost a hint of black metal at times. Which makes sense actually because the guys behind this were in the avant black 'n' roll band Code. Oh, and the blackened folk group Hexvessel. I'm really fond of both as well.

Beastmilk have this great apocalyptic quality to their sound, all gloom 'n' doom, but still rock out and deliver a great level of energy in spite of the sullenness. Their compositions really hit the spot. Part of a new gloomy punk brigade that includes bands like His Electro Blue Voice, Grave Babies, Holograms, Iceage, Naomi Punk, etc.

Also coming in March from DG: the premiere recording of John Adams' "The Gospel According to the Other Mary," with the LA Phil and LA Master Chorale under Gus Dude.  I heard this at Disney Hall in June 2012 (two days after the premiere) and was completely blown away.

The Jezabels - The Brink

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--yEnSGaXAs

Something about The Jezabels reminds me of late 90's Australian rock. An era where bands like Powderfinger achieved mainstream success while maintaining their identity and integrity. The Brink is a continuation of their outstanding debut Prisoner. It's unabashed pop rock with a twang of "Australiana" (wide expanses, the road, endless sky, summer) propelled by Kate Bush melodies.

A small EP release, part of a bigger release schedule for 2014 from Machinedrum, Vapor Park.
Machinedrum is a late discovery of mine, prolific electronic musician.
I like the later trend in his output, mixing influences of Boards of Canada, Hip-Hop, Glitch, Electroacustical with sensible notions of melody and harmony, great maturity all around.

I'll keep my eyes on this man.

I'll take your word for it on Crosby, but as a general proposition the voices of most 1960s folk-rock icons are shot.  We went to one of the LA shows on the Buffalo Springfield 2011 tour, and it was sad to see that neither Stills nor Young could sing worth a damn (Young always had trouble staying on pitch, and he sure hasn't gotten better at it).

The only two guys I can think of offhand who have taken care of their voices and can still bring it are Richie Furay and Chris Hillman (probably not a coincidence that both are devout Christians who have mostly stayed away from drugs and don't tour much).

New Beck album isn't doing it for me. Zzzzzz.

The new St. Vincent however is great to my ears.

Wild Beast - Present Tense
(http://nme.assets.ipccdn.co.uk/images/gallery/2014WildBeasts_PresentTense_310114.jpg)
This is a really well recorded album showing off what I think are great song writing skills and strong vocals.  The synths are bit more laid back than they were on Smother, especially the percussion. While you'll immediately recognize the album as one from Wild Beasts, if you're familiar with them, you'll also feel that they've taken a slightly different approach with this album, and for me it works.  It's worth a stream, and you just may find yourself buying it.

Slough Feg - Digital Resistance
(http://cdn3.pitchfork.com/albums/20154/homepage_large.75b72f95.jpg)
Wow!  Maybe some of you were already familiar with Slough Feg, and maybe being from San Francisco I should have been, but this was my first exposure to this classic metal band and I'm totally digging this concept album.  Somewhere between Thin Lizzy and Iron Maiden there is no mistaking that these guys have been playing together for a long time.  The mature sound is addicting.  I've only streamed this album today, but I'm searching for a nice hi-res or vinyl version to buy.  Highly recommended for the classic rocker looking for something new!

I'm streaming St. Vincent at the moment.

Yeah, this is rad. Really dig her guitar work. Crunchy rhythm punctuated by characteristic licks, angelic melodies transitioning to punk rock swagger, quirky beats that you can't help but groove to and anthems that explode from nowhere. Classic St. Vincent.

LCD Soundsystem is going to release the full recording of their last concert as a 5LP set on Record Store Day.

It will include a playful and hoarse rendition of their most charmingly pretentious song:

There's no way some snot-nosed punk is leaving my cheese out in the wind this year.

Yeahhh -- I'm digging the new St. Vincent a lot too. I love the jerky, angular melodies juxtaposed with her singing. It's a lot more processed, compressed and digital than her previous efforts, which fit the theme of the album of navigating the real world and digital world. The second half of Huey Newton gets me head thrashing every time. I hope we eventually get a full on rock out album from her at some point.

A few other things I've picked up this month...

Marissa Nadler - July
(http://www.theaquarian.com/wp-content/uploads//2014/02/02-12-Discs-Marissa-Nadler-July.jpg)

Bear Hands - Distraction
(http://www.mxdwn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Bear-Hands-Distraction.jpg)

Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks - Wig Out At Jagbags
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cJEKdwL3v7Q/UoJYXdPIZII/AAAAAAAAl_8/mFb8iaMHGVg/s1600/2a1be4ed.jpg)

I'll post thoughts on some of this stuff later if anyone is interested...

Yes! These three have been on heavy rotation from me this year -- especially that Stephen Malkmus. So many awesome little guitar licks all over that record.

The Gardens & Villa and Phantogram aren't really grabbing me the same way their previous efforts have.

Lots of good stuff this year so far, despite a few disappointments for me personally (Broken Bells, Warpaint). That Beck album isn't grabbing me either, but then again it took me a few months to warm up to Sea Change.

A few other albums I feel are a cut above the rest this year that I haven't seen mentioned yet:

ceo - Wonderland
(http://cdn.stereogum.com/files/2014/01/ceo-Wonderland-300x300.jpg)

Temples - Sun Structures
(http://popstache.com/wp-content/uploads/temples_sun_structures_album-500x500-300x300.jpg)

Planningtorock - All Love's Legal
(http://o.scdn.co/300/91db5047f7e08c1cbc1b609ee8bc3520a563b69e)

And, a bit early, but I'm obsessed with both the new War on Drugs and Real Estate records:

There is a record store near me that I love and consider the shop owner a friend, so I trek out to his shop. But if not for that, I'd just wait to buy everything online. Last year, everything that I wanted could have been found online for retail in the following weeks.

You're right. A lot of the albums I wanted bounced back to the original labels and were sold with t-shirts etc. There's just something about having a bunch of 12"s to take home and play. I kinda miss that.

Mogwai's Rave Tapes is in heavy rotation at the moment.

I feel like a heathen admitting this but I'm not that familiar with Mogwai. I'm getting strong Spiritualized and Explosions in the Sky vibes here. Love the soaring crescendoes. Reminds me of Agaetis Byrjun era Sigur Ros.

WOW... the new Gardens & Villa is amazing. Definitely one of my favorite records so far this year.

"Purple Mesas" is just soul-stirring. It hits that perfect stride at 3:12 and makes me wanna just drive into the sunrise forever.

That and the new St. Vincent are rocking my socks off.

Not to piss on anyone's fondness for the new Beck or anything, but---with the exception of "Morning" which is very pretty---it's just bland for me so far. Like some spacey rendition of bad adult contemporary. Or maybe Sea Change after a lobotomy.

Honestly, I don't think Beck is very good at making focused albums. He's at his best when he indulges his eclectic influences. That's what made Sea Change (to which this album is obviously harkening back) better. I understand variations of a theme, but here everything just runs together too much.

I miss Midnight Vultures and Guero.

Ghostbeach - Blonde

More 80s worship, basically what everyone and their sister is doing right now. Not that I'm complaining. This album has some fantastic synthesizer grooves. Fun but forgettable.

Lo Fang - Blue Film

A slow burner for sure. Electronica with sampled instruments and lots of effects, tinkly Four Tet-esque noodling meets Dirty Projectors meets Weekend's cold, whiny fake sentimentality. Only a bit flat in delivery. However there are some genuinely excellent moments like the end to "Blue Film" and pretty much all of "Boris" and "#88." Still, there's not enough here to really draw me back again and again. The type of album you forget about fairly quickly.

Nothing - Guilty of Everything

Haven't listened to much of this yet, but so far I'm digging it. Can definitely hear the comparisons people make to Jesu. Big crushing sound but with a soft and dreamy side.

Sky Ferreira - Night Time, My Time

ZOMG a bewb! Controversy!  ::)

Like the above, I haven't listened to much of this yet. So far it seems like enjoyable but pretty run-of-the-mill electropop.

Trust - Joyland

Their first album, TRST, was one of my favorites from a 2012. These guys know how to write some brutally infectious pop, and they have a self deprecating sense of humor to boot. Perhaps the most striking feature of their music is the lead singer's voice which takes some getting used to, but once you do you wonder why more singers don't sound like that. Anyway, this is their second album and definitely a departure from the moodier TRST. This time 'round everything is brighter and bouncier and more cheerful, only in a somewhat manic and disturbed sort of way. Less speedball in a grimy bathroom, more ecstasy in... well, a grimy bathroom. The production quality of this album though is problematic. The vocals are too buried in the mix and the BOOM BOOM distorted bass is way too omnipresent. Though I have a feeling it's intentional as part of the album's aesthetic.

Not digging it nearly as much as TRST thus far, but "Capitol" is a pretty amazing track with its sense of buoyancy and some wonderful vocals.

Rumor has it that Tool will be releasing a new album in 2014 - however Tool is known for delaying releases, and taking their time releasing new albums. It's already been 8 years Since their last album "10,000 Days" so I hope this rumor turns out to be true. Adam Jones and Danny Carey stated in press release that hey hoped to have it ready for release by the first quarter of 2014, I sure hope that is true, I have been waiting 8 years for their next album.

I associate TRST with the smoky, strobe lit debauchery of Gloryhole. Joyland seems more mellow to me. The come down perhaps. Could be a grower though. Had to replay Capitol, Are We Arc? and Rescue, Mister after the initial play through. Good shit.

As a fan of Mutations and Sea Change, I see Morning Phase as in between those two.  "Wave" is the album's "Nobody's Fault But My Own" (though "Nobody's Fault" is better).  The first half gets better the more I listen to it.  Bonus points for using "exegesis" as a lyric.  And as a Simon and Garfunkel fan, "Turn Away" is fun.  Confluence of 60's, 70's, Country Rock.  Some of Mutations took me a little while too.

Indeed. They have managed to keep to the spirit of the early NIN sound and not trample all over it. Lesser artist would have been too tempted to use contemporary sounds. At one end either glitch it to death or drown it in a mire of brostep wobble at the other.

Yeah. The reason why these tracks have that spirit is because they were made a while back, back when Christopherson and Balance were still alive, back before laptop composition really took over and everything was decidedly more "homebrew," and they have only just now seen a proper release after being unearthed from the vaults.

Fun fact: that remix of Closer was used in the credits of Se7en back in '95.

True. Being a NIN fan I bought the 2 disc DVD of SE7EN (New Line) when it was released, which features on disc 2, Exploration Of The Opening Sequence

You get it in 24/96, DTS ES, Dolby Ex or Stereo surround, played along to storyboards, rough or final film sequence.

Future Islands - Singles

Not a "Best Of" compilation as the title implies but this work may be the most accessible from Future Islands. Rich with Pixie-esque melodies and delivered by a vocalist who could lay claim to any Karaoke mantle as the potential love-child of Bowie and Frank Black. There's no filler here. Just concentrated win.

The new Cloud Nothings album, Here And Nowhere Else, is a little hard for me to get into thus far.

I really dug their early collection of rough bedroom tracks and then their self-titled debut which had this incredibly youthful, snarky energy to it like a lost anarcho punk band filtered through Dr. Seuss. Their follow up, Attack On Memory, was more experimental and moody but still had enough incredible moments ("Stay Useless" and "Cut You") to be enjoyable. This newest album brings back a lot of the energy from their earlier works, but with a lot of the charm replaced by their more noisier and abrasive tendencies. They're almost unrecognizable at times. Still, it's proving to be a slow burner, and some tracks have already found their way into my heart ("Psychic Trauma") or are compelling enough for me to explore ("No Thoughts" and "Pattern Walk").

Casket Girls' True Love Kills The Fairy Tale

I am seriously digging this thing from start to finish, with every track turning out to be a jewel of dream journal pop. A nice mix of nostalgia chants and free spirited disregard for them, with minor goth tendencies that surface for time to time amidst the veneer of bubbly anthems.

*  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *

Neneh Cherry's Plank Project

Really nifty electronica infused, soulful singing that has gotten under my skin. This sort of stuff is fairly common now, but Neneh was one of the early practitioners. Here she's really showing off her knack for composition and pacing, crafting a quietly seductive and worldly wise, sincere collection of club tracks. The album seems to be minor key playful---like a knowing smile---but never at the expense of authenticity. She maintains just enough distance to get a fuller perspective.

Perhaps the weakest area of Neneh's album lies in her ability to harness the much sought after pop hook. Overall the album is perhaps a bit too "minor key" and in need of some genuine hooks. It would make it more memorable on a finer level, whereas in its current form it kind of blends together and ends up being a sum total kind of experience for me.

Liars' Mess

My fondness for Liars comes and goes, and I'd say it's about as varied as their musical catalog. This time around, their harsh distorted electobuzz and Eurotrash aesthetic seems pretty hit or miss. Overall I'd say this album is quite aptly named. Wixiw and Sisterworld by comparison were much more interesting and well executed albums for me. Still, there are things to like about this one.

*  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *

Also this came out at the very end of December of last year, so I'm counting it among this year's releases...

Dead Reptile Shrine's Praise Cemetary [sic].

Lo-fi ritualistic black metal cultishness. Not for the faint of heart or people who take music genres too seriously. Overall, these guys have always had a comical mystique about them, in part due to their extremely limited cassette tape releases that often ended up more ritual-on-tape than album. Like discovering an artifact hidden away in a dank crevice that wasn't meant to ever see the light of day again. Part solemn procession, part exorcism, part insane asylum confessional. Like Xasthur having a nervous breakdown at the dentist's. Weird, twisted and atrociously recorded outsider black metal.

Also worth a mention / impressions forthcoming:

White Suns - Totem

Noisy apocalyptic punk and metal abomination, and I meant that in a good way.

Freddie Gibbs & Madlib - Pinata

Really great mashup combining both talents effectively into an addicting hip hop experience.

Mac Demarco - Salad Days

Fantastic mellow guitar jams, like a stripped-down-one-man-Kinks on sedatives.

EMA - The Future's Void

The Super Deluxe Edition expands the album to a five-disc release with even more rarities, discs dedicated to B-sides, demos and rehearsals and a version of the album mixed in Blu-ray Audio 5.1 Surround Sound. That edition also comes with a hardbound book with liner notes by Rolling Stone's David Fricke, never-before-seen photos by Kevin Westerberg and "reimagined" album art by artist Josh Graham. The band is also putting out a double-LP edition of the album on 200-gram vinyl.

I must confess, I've pre-ordered the Super Deluxe OMG How Much!? Edition

I have listened to the Mac Demarco album twice in the last 24 hours.  I absolutely love it.  This one is going straight to heavy rotation.  Thanks for the heads up MF!

I also got the new Future Islands album.   I wanted to get the last release but it was never there when I was at the record store.  I have it next in my queue for tonight after I fully absorb Salad Days.  I listened briefly to a couple tracks and it was quite nice.  Cheers olor1n for reminding me.

Just finished listening to the new Hold Steady album.

Between them and Drive-By Truckers, March was a good month for straight-ahead, mainstream rock.

EMA - The Future's Void

Another one to add to the growing pile of outstanding releases for the year. Quite a contrast to the sparse, confronting rawness of Past Life Martyred Saints. Song-craft here is more conventional, buffed with higher fidelity and lavish production. It's EMA emerging from the abyss of Past Life to rock out a bit.

The London Philharmonic Orchestra perform Górecki’s Symphony No. 4 (http://www.theguardian.com/music/musicblog/video/2014/apr/14/philharmonic-orchaestra-video)

"When Henryk Górecki's Third Symphony (Symphony of Sorrowful Songs) became the best selling piece of classical music of all time, the world wondered how he would follow it. Sadly, the Polish composer died in 2010, before he had the chance to premiere his Symphony No 4. Since his death, Górecki's son Mikołaj has worked on the detailed manuscript his father left, and this performance by the London Philharmonic Orchestra – recorded on 12 April at Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall – is the symphony's first ever airing. Górecki's Symphony No. 4 was commissioned by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Southbank Centre, London, with support from the Adam Mickiewicz Institute (who also supported filming of the performance) and the Polish Cultural Institute in London, The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, and the ZaterdagMatinee Amsterdam." This has it's roots firmly in the 70's dub tradition and is all the better for it. I could mix this with a Scientist dubplate and it wouldn't be out of place. The only thing that gives it away is the fidelity of the recordings. A must buy for dub heads and residents of Amsterdam, Colorado and Washington.

Jack White Lazaretto

It's a mixed bag, flitting between country, blues rock and Funkadelic style grooves (listen to the title tune Lazaretto (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=qI-95cTMeLM) then Funkadelic's Super Stupid (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=oVHrvx-Ua68). None of it is really offensive, but I found myself gravitating towards the more uptempo tunes.

Godsmack - 1000hp
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/6a/Godsmack-1000hp-album-cover.jpg)

"Turn that sh*t up louder!
Make it all go faster!
Playin through the witching hour
Take it to 1000 horsepower!"

Sully and the boys return 4 years later with more of what they do best.  If you were expecting Godsmack to be reinvented, to go in a new direction, look elsewhere.  If you're a fan and love their late 90's in your face riffs, rhythms, and Sully's unmistakable vocals you are in luck.  Powerful and vibrant, I can already see these guys opening a show in hometown Boston with the title track and having the crowd come absolutely unglued.  This is an album that's setting up a great tour, there is no doubt about that.  Godsmack doesn't disappoint on stage!

There is a some exploration in a few tracks like Nothing Comes Easy with nothing less than a cello solo stuck in the middle!  Most of the tracks are the bread and butter metal that the band has served up for nearly two decades.  I couldn't be happier that they keep bringing it!  headbang

I luv Godsmack!!  But....so far only Generation Day does anything for me on this new album.  1000hp is pretty decent but it's too far from Godsmack and too close to LA/Hollywood glam rock (LA Guns, GnR, etc) for my tastes. Would have preferred more layering and percussion on that track.  I hope they credited Metallica on Nothing Comes Easy.

I'm sure it's in MF's post somewhere, what isn't  ;), but thought I'd throw up  quick one for the new Interpol album, El Pintor.

Seems like some are being a little critical of the album, but I think Interpol has moved back to what works better for them with tracks that resemble the strong stuff from Turn on the Bright Lights and Antics.  This album is a radical change for the good when compared to the, what should be forgotten, self titled release.

The first half of the album is definitely stronger.  If you're not up for grabbing the whole album, don't miss "My Blue Supreme".

I'm sure it's in MF's post somewhere, what isn't  ;), but thought I'd throw up  quick one for the new Interpol album, El Pintor.

I liked the song but it felt very squashed. Looks like the numbers back me up. http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/73549

This album download is maybe my best buy this year.
The music is a concept album with an almost Pink Floydian vibe, but performed by very good (jazz?) musicians with a healthy bit of ECM influence.
It says in the liner notes that the Sennheiser HD800 was used for mixing and mastering and I do think that the album sounds incredible on all my headphones.
Lots of depth, an almost 3 dimensional sound stage and a beautiful velvet black background.

Convinced a vinyl head buddy at work to pick up a Hilo. I'll be listening to a vinyl drop of Syro very very soon.

In the interim, for those of you who won't scoff, the new La Roux album is great. I don't know how I missed this in July, but all 9 tracks are just pure pop goodness.

CSO Resound just dropped this album (got their marketing email). I'm sad I wasn't able to be there for the performance but I can't wait to get the recording in hand.

The Scottish duo Boards Of Canada have re-released for 2014 Hi Scores. Evidently re-recorded and re-mastered from original DAT tapes. Available on vinyl, download and CD.

In the mean time I'm listening to KIASMOS by Kiasmos

For me, being a fan of Ólafur Arnalds, I was expecting neo-classical and ambient structures. Pleasantly surprised I'm getting neo-classical minimal techno / tech house.

From Erased Tapes...

Kiasmos is made up of Icelandic BAFTA-winning composer Ólafur Arnalds, known for his unique blend of minimal piano and string compositions with electronic sounds, and Janus Rasmussen from the Faroe Islands, known as the mastermind of the electro-pop outfit Bloodgroup. Based in Reykjavík, Arnalds used to work as a sound engineer, often for Rasmussen's other projects, where the two musicians discovered their common love for minimal, experimental music. They eventually became best friends, often hanging out in their studio, exploring electronic sounds.

After dropping several tracks and performing at select festivals throughout the years, Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen dedicated the year 2014 to explore the area in-between Ólafur’s more acoustic, piano-based solo work and Janus’s synth-heavy electro pop, with their collaborative electronic project Kiasmos.

By focusing solely on their self-titled debut album, Ólafur and Janus have been able to combine and further develop their unique sound aesthetics to complete an album driven by their mutual love for electronic music. Made in Ólafur’s newly build studio in Reykjavík, Iceland, a majority of the album was recorded using acoustic instruments next to a variety of synthesisers, drum machines and tape delays. It features a live drummer, string quartet and Ólafur performing on the grand piano, producing an ambient, textured sound, which makes it a perfect home listen and equally danceable record. If you listen closely, you can spot them record the thumb piano, finger snapping and even the sound of the metal grinder of a lighter slowly to replace the usual electronic hi-hat sounds, giving the album a far more intimate and unique atmosphere.

“We decided to start almost completely over with this record, so most of the material is written this year with the idea of making a record that can stand as one piece rather than a collection of songs. I am very excited to get a proper record out exploring a different territory than I am used to. I touch a lot on electronic genres in my own music but never have the opportunity to go full out electronic like we do here.” – Ólafur Arnalds

“The Kiasmos project has been around since 2009, but because of all our other projects we never really got the time to sit down and write all the tracks we always wanted to. So when we early this year finally found the time to sit down and make a full length album there was so much we wanted to try out. The result surprised us a bit, it's deeper and more emotional than we imagined it to be, but that's the beauty of being able to make an album.” – Janus Rasmussen

Kiasmos – s/t will be released on Double-Vinyl, CD and Download via Erased Tapes on October 27th, 2014.

‘Nothing short of outstanding’ – Crack Magazine
'Striking, graceful and completely naked' 9/10 – Clash
'Kiasmos is all about the slow build’  – The Skinny
'They just make it sound so easy' 8/10 – Drowned In Sound
‘Sumptuous electronica from the Arctic North’ 8/10 – Uncut
'As assured as it is enveloping’ ★★★★ 1/2 – Music OMH
'The realms conjured are as dark as the cover image’ – Artsdesk
‘Light orchestral touches and piano phrases radiate around the production's soft edges’ – Pitchfork

Taylor Swift's 1989. Her ode the '80s, the sounds of synth, and acid choruses that take the form of structured verse. Or something. It's not terrible, with more than a few catchy tracks. Just don't expect Speak Now or Fearless quality, no siree blonde.

Notable tracks- Blank Space, Style, Shake it Off, Clean. To a lesser extent- How You Get the Girl, Wonderland, New Romantics. (Wonderland and New Romantics are Deluxe edition only, I think)

Shake it Off and Style being the major standouts. The former for being seemingly out of place considering the tone of the rest of the album, with it's modern bubble gum pop er.. style. The latter is probably the sole track that actually sounds as if it could've been a forgotten '80s one hit wonder.

I got the LP and the CD.  The CD because I want a lossless digital version.  I like the album.

The LP comes in a PVC outer sleeve.  There's concern that PVC sleeves could leach out plasticizer or some other chemical that may damage the vinyl over time.  To be safe I'd take the album out of the PVC sleeve.  If you want to store the album in an outer sleeve get a different sleeve that is not PVC.  There's a thread over on Hoffman Forums about this: http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/warning-to-all-record-collectors-outer-bag-inner-sleeve-concerns.387179/

It seemed pretty uneven to me, with some tracks' production sounding worse than others. I think it has to do, in part, with how busy some of the tracks are. They end up sounding kinda... cluttered? At around 35 minutes, my biggest complaint was that things seemed a bit too crammed together and jumbled up at times.

The vinyl version sounds better to me however.

I'm digging You're Dead as well.  I think they were going for "something" that at times works, but gets lost at other times through too many layers being caked on.

Edit - MF beat me to it!

fugazi - first demo

Simply awesome to hear these guys before the "final touches" were put on music that was eventually released over the decade that passed after they made this demo.  It's amazing to see how they really stood out from the hardcore scene there were a strong part of. They obviously cared about how they were recorded, which wasn't true of many artist in the scene at the time.

A must for any fan.

Objekt's Flatland has real staying power for me; listening to "Dogma" over and over in particular. The groove and drums remind me of Tricky's "Mellow" for some reason.

Portable's "Surrender" is really mellow and great, even if I haven't gotten to into the deep house movement.

Just getting into Andy Stott's Faith In Strangers. Really sprawling sound with shades of Japanese tribal weirdos Vasilisk from time to time.

Lots of hidden gems on bandcamp, too.

Thanks Quest, i was an Aphex fan in the 90s, the few songs I had from that era were all mp3s, just updated to lossless last night and so am eager to catch up.
