Title: Modern Ensemble Jazz...
Post by: Anathallo on July 02, 2012, 07:11:07 PM
Would love to hear some recommendations - getting tired of the classics.

Currently have:

Vijay Iyer - Accelerando http://www.qobuz.com/album/accelerando-vijay-iyer-trio/0614427952424 for samples or http://soundcloud.com/sonocentric/sets/vijay-iyer-trio-accelerando for full song/if you can't read french.
Ambrose Akinmusire - When the Heart Emerges Glistening http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3D3808EDE6620D1A
The October Trio - New Dream http://theoctobertrio.bandcamp.com/album/new-dream

on heavy rotation.  Looking for some more stuff along those lines - modern, melody driven ensemble jazz.  Nothing too experimental!

Have you looked into Venus Records?

They have a ton of this stuff and nicely recorded and presented as well. Look into them.  ;)

Either/Orchestra
Sleepwalker
Shibusashirazu
Angles
Liberty Ellman (is a member of Vijay Iyer)

Are a few that pop into mind.  Never listened to the October Trio theough, just the first two groups.

Are you named after the group Anathallo?  They are pretty solid.

Been listening to the new Pat Metheny record with Chris Potter lots the past week. Really digging it.

Definitely - in honour of their indefinite hiatus!  A Holiday At the Sea EP is probably my favourite release ever - and it's only 20 minutes.

I try to listen to the spin-off acts - fun. (I hate that single, even though I like Janelle Monae), and Younger (http://positivebeat.bandcamp.com/album/new-message), but they both pale in comparison.

Anyways, regarding the recommendations - they should keep me more than busy for a while - thanks for the input!

Ambrose Akinmusire is sounding pretty good. Thanks for the recommendation, had completely missed him.

ACT records from Naxos are generally pretty good. European stuff :)

Have been digging local stuff from Finland lately, but mainly old 70s stuff...

Although you might like Oddarrang:

Verneri Pohjola with his steady group is getting more and more international recognition. This is a great piece:

Also looked in to Venus records and listened to some samples. Being a fan of Italian progressive stuff, Roma trio hit my eyes. Have to consider ordering some stuff. A bit expensive though :(

Really like the new Brad Mehldau Trio record, "Where Do You Start."

If you like organ trio type stuff, check out "Shimmy" by Billy Martin and Wil Blades. Recommend the CD: my vinyl copy was unlistenable (noisy Rice Krispies).

"Sleeper," a live recording of a 1979 Japanese concert by the Keith Jarrett "European" quartet that was just released about a month ago? Believe the hype. It is all that.

I had trouble tuning into "sleeper". Then again, never was a fan of Jarret, at least his modal-ism.
