Title: Headphones that make you feel it in the ass!
Post by: Prydz on August 08, 2015, 11:04:44 PM
Hello

Some have maybe seen that I'm looking for new cans. For past 4 months ive been using LCD-3F coming of LCD-2s and Denon AH-D2000. I wanna get rid of LCD-3F because:
 1. I cant wear them for more then 45min-1 hour before getting ache on top of my head.
 2. I want something different, yet similar sounding.

So I want that crystal clear sound and good bass, tho lower bass isent the most importent, i'm not a basshead even tho I listen to alot of EDM and electronic music.
What I want is a headphone that can deliver that kick drum you feel in your chest with speakers, I belive its around 200Hz with speakers, but I want to feel that in my ear. Great dynamics is also importent.

I know Abyss is suppose to deliver this, but I cant afford that. :D

What would you guys suggest?

Do they make the FA-011 anymore? That had some serious bass impact.

I cede the mike to Ohhgourami....he knows the Krell line up so well that he is on first-name terms with each capacitor, audio transistor, transformer and other electronic components in those amps  :)p13

The cheapest amp, which seems to be the Vanguard, goes for around 2,5k USD used. New I might aswell just buy Abyss :D Oh well... I guess the guy in the store was right, you really do have to pay if you want that bass combined with that crystal clear sound... Rip wallets

How much better is the HE-6 compared to HE-560, and how is HE-560 compared to LCD-3F?
I can get HE-560 for decent price. And then I could get a pretty good amp when I sale my Mjolnir and LCD-3F

I would also say HE-6, although if you have any sort of treble sensitivity issues then Abyss may be worth it for you.

HE-6 is hands down better than HE-560, but then again if you really have treble issues then HE-6 may be out for you.

HE-6 with Rag sounds fine. I got some guys on hf trying out the Xindak PM power amp too. Full 20wpc class A for ~1200 shipped.

Fostex TH600's have some serious bass...

HE-6 with a speaker amp or Abyss is all I can think of, unfortunately.

A Pioneer Monitor 10-II with good condition earpads can pound the shit out of your skull without distorting as well, but that's hard to find and has some upper midrange problems.

A "super" LCD-2.2 might work too... but I'm not sure about the dynamics.

EDIT:

Fostex TH600's have some serious bass...
Not a fan of this one. Subbass light, midbass heavy. Sounds farty and shallow; HE-6 and 10-II perform much better in this regard. Not very good on the clarity/cleanliness side either.

Don't see ZMF mentioned here, but the Vibro are astonishing for the likes of James Blake.

Someone edited the title...

I bought a used pair with fuzzor mod. So now I just need an amp and cable.

As CT mentioned, small class D amps can be found for cheap and do quite well with the HE-6 before getting into the monstrosities that we nutters lust after.

CT, will the Sys suffice as the pre-amp?

If you really want to feel bass, get a SUBPAC: http://thesubpac.com/

I have the S1 and it's great as long as you don't have it turned up too much. It can be turned up to ridiculous levels if you want a back massage.
I use it mostly for watching movies with Out Of Your Head for the full home theater experience.

Is there any aftermarket cable maker who makes HE-6 cables with speaker taps?
Title: Re: Headphones that make you feel it in the ass!

Play the headphones loud enough, and you will feel it in your ear for sure-- maybe even rupture your ear.

If you want to feel it around the ear, get a pair of headphones with a really crappy enclosure that's prone to vibration-- like the older Beats Studios.

someone doesn't know how to speaker amp the HE-6

build a robinette box (a guide is available on head-fi) if you're DIY-oriented, or buy HFM's speaker amp box (HE-Adapter)

What? No need for those silly things.

Just make a 4pin xlr to banana cable. Actually, skip the bananas and just tin the ends.

Don't built the robinette box... a design that lets you tie the grounds together with a flip of a switch is just begging for somebody to blow an amp.

Just get a 4-pin XLR (female) and 4 wires. Connect as follows:
pin1 = L+
pin2 = L-
pin3 = R+
pin4 = R-

Do braiding or add bananas or spades or whatever you wish afterwards.

Whoops:  Class T amp, I forgot  :)p14 :  http://www.trendsaudio.com/EN/Support/TA102Sheet.pdf (http://www.trendsaudio.com/EN/Support/TA102Sheet.pdf)
Check out the SE 45W version.  That's what jazzfan has for a tiny/good value rig with HE-6.

yes, just plug a 50 ohm transducer into something designed to handle 8 ohms, that'll go swimmingly

that definitely won't push the amp way too hard and cause it to distort
Title: Re: Headphones that make you feel it in the ass!
Post by: ohhgourami on August 15, 2015, 01:29:35 AM
I always plug mine directly into my amps.

A 50 ohm load should be no problem for a solid state amplifier. The only niggle I can think of is if it's a class D output stage that relies on the load to filter out some of the ultrasonic garbage, which still shouldn't be an issue as we are within an order of magnitude of the intended design. Otherwise, a high impedance load should be an easier load as it draws less current and if it's a class A design you'll probably stay within that region longer.

Ah where were you who I did this? Been there, done that and blew out the amp's audio transistors

I got in many fights with robrob over the design of his box as well as many of his other projects. I pointed out the dangers of the design, and offered several very simple fixes (literally snipping a single wire in one case) that would have vastly increased the safety of the device. He shut me down on all of them and refused to admit any danger and that people should know when to flip the switch. Yeah no, that's just laziness and pride getting in the way of safety.

He built entire webpages and apps to help people make calculations etc when he literally only learned the formulas the week before. I can sorta understand the desire to help and he was obviously excited to share, but cripes I was fixing a lot of his errors along the way. He didn't even understand the math behind a resistor divider for Grod's sake, then had the audacity to name the circuit after himself.

Then there was the whole mess with Brunk who rode the hype for the robinette box and stole a ton of money from people. Ugh.

Effing Brunk. I donated $100+ to his retirement. And this guy robrob actually recommended brunk's name as the man to do the job. A month later, he had the temerity to laugh at us in his post on Head-fi.

I completely agree. I use the S2. Once you dial in the intensity so that it's accurate, the extra bass information that your body feels and your ears hear (due to bone conduction) is absolutely amazing. I actually found that it scales with DACs as well - better DACs provide an even better experience.

Cannot recommend highly enough. It's not a gimmick, despite what it may look like.

Skullcandy crusher ... with the bass slider at max.  ;D

don't need a portable amplifier for this as well.

You may have to 'compromise' on overall SQ though  :(

Duct tape one of these to the back end of a a teledildonics device and you'll have a nifty setup.
