Lot of great gear at the meet. Fun time. Really liked the "new" Lyr with Bifrost. Not as impressed with HE1000's as I thought I might be. At least not $3000 impressed. Moar later. Have a 7 + hour drive ahead. Need more coffee.  p:8

Lucky me, I get to drive back up to Pasadena AGAIN today for the LAOC monthly meet:

If I didn't have to drive Bob Levi up today, I would have skipped and just chilled at home today.  :)p1

Thanks for helping us get an incredible meal. I'll just have to remember what was ordered the next time I'm there.

Yeah, that was pretty shameless of OJ there at the end.  :)p13

EAR DAC vs. Yggy was good. More later.

+1 Worthy owns for specific preferences. LOL on the third DAC being already out of the race from the get go.

If what I head was the reDACTed^2 -> Lyr2 (speshul sauce tubes) -> Ether, that was a great setup. I like the Ethers. Hopefully Dan will be more consistent with this set of cans... and perhaps make them more affordable (or have an affordable plebe version).

Not too impressed with the HE1K. I've told this to NoOne411 before. To splashy and bright for me. Proly preferences.

Couldn't go to dinner, but Yi Mei was awesome.

I liked the Magico Q7MK2 speakers this time around, though I felt the sweet spot was somewhat narrow.

Also, got my UE ear impressions. And indeed my ear holes are big and deep. Which my explain why many IEMs that some folks consider neutral and nice sound anemic while bassy ones sound right to me. Of the table, I like the UE 7 Pros bestest.

^I also think the UE 7 are really nice.  Best all-rounders.  UE4, UE7, UERM are my 3 favorites.  UE7 just a bit warmer than UE4 and UERM, easier to drive than UERM.  I had the demos for a long time and always came back to those three.

The new Schiit stuff is scary good. Whatever was inside that Bifrost box is a resolution monster. I plugged in my Noble PRs, and just listened to the Eva Cassidy track that the previous person had cued up. My first comment: "God, I hate Ovation guitars." Yeah, enough resolution that if you know what you're listening to, you can really see way into the mix.

EC Black Widow does indeed deliver the goods. It would be a great value at 1.5x the price.

GOv2 is so much better than the original that the comparison is just silly.  I am now officially impatient for my v2+ to show up. It's going to KILL the battery-powered DAC/amp market.

Apparently I am somewhat out of sync with the majority opinion (yeah, that that never happens), but I really like the HE1000. It pushes all of my buttons. Even sounded good out of the AK Jr. First time I've EVER said "yeah, I could see that replacing my HD 800."

I liked the Magico Q7MK2 speakers this time around, though I felt the sweet spot was somewhat narrow.

They needed to be toe'd in more with the intersection slightly in front of the couch. Surprised how many folks don't know how to correctly setup and tweak speaker placement. Resonances were well controlled. Magico heroic construction does work. Still sounds like bass in a box though.

Yes. It was a very picky set up. When I moved to the end of the couch the imaging stopped working. The center was not too bad but more toe in might have worked better. The bass was indeed not their best asset.

They don't make me loose sleep, or make me feel I'm loosing big time relative to my entry level Mackies. But have honestly heard complete and utter failures at the $200k price range (relative to any speaker), and this were not horrible. In many cases I feel it comes down to improper placement indeed, and poor room preparation and application. Price is quite crazy.

^I also think the UE 7 are really nice.  Best all-rounders.  UE4, UE7, UERM are my 3 favorites.  UE7 just a bit warmer than UE4 and UERM, easier to drive than UERM.  I had the demos for a long time and always came back to those three.

Yes, the UE 7s are IMO warmer than the UERMs and the 18s. They work better for me perhaps due to the shape of my canal. Didn't try the UE4s though. The UE 7 are very pleasant and also fairly comfortable and easy to position. Really liked them.

The imaging was pure shit considering the quality of the room with the diffraction and absorbing panels. I don't think toe-in would have helped. Imaging was simply a lost cause with that setup. Personally I would have put absorbers instead of Ethan Weiner's diffractors on one spot of the side walls to kill the first reflection.

OJ's DIY special OBs would have killed the Magicos.

Whoa, you guys are already demoing this?!  Or these? Zang. Tell us more.

There's always a surprise at every Changstar meet.

Jason and Moffat were tight lipped... But I strongly suspected something was different on THAT Bifrost... I did hear someone say "ReDACed^2", but no idea what that means.

The megacomboburrito filter in the Yggy, Theta, etc. has a certain presentation in terms of space. I wasn't too sure at first, but it became the most evident with certain spacious recordings I was very familiar with. I kept pressing the input select button because I thought it was the absolute polarity button like on the Yggy (yeah it make a difference.) Also, D-S Bifrost has a certain grain, more than the Gungnir. Did not hear any such D-S nonsense. The Schiit guys might be playing games though. Maybe they put the new AKM DAC chip in there. Still the megacomboburrito soundstage is a huge giveaway for me. The end is near for all other D-S DACs below around $1200.

Tonality is warm, especially after settling in. Does not sound like NOS. Thank you jebus! Treble sounded better in the afternoon. I guess it only needs a 3 hour warm-up.

Those tin cans on the Lyr 2 are "solid state" tubes. An experiment. No idea if they will be released. They are cannot be stuck into other tube amps. Crack, poof! Anyways, the SS tubes offer a different take on the usual Lyr 2 warm sound. Lyr 2 now becomes fast, precise, lean, and mean.

Surprisingly good sounding compact DAC/amp for 009. Craig and I liked it! This new Vostok is a huge improvement over the prior version (which most of here at Changstar never talked about much, for good reason.) Again, this is good. Easily take it over some of the STAX amps.

By the time I got into the room to get a listen to the dacs, I asked about the Chord. And people were shaking their heads and just continued to A/B the Yggdrasil and EAR DAC. Different presentation from each, but I'll wait for the comparison experts to do a better job of communicating what I was hearing.

This is how meets should be enthusiast and dedicated vendors enjoying the hobby.  By the way did anyone get a chances to listen to a vpi classic turntable?

Yggy vs EAR DAC

Different approaches. They trade blows against each other. I like both DACs, but will keep it simple:
In general terms, EAR has better analog, Yggy has better digital. Pick your poison. The EAR is similar to Lampi 4, 5, Big 5, but done better. Way better.

OJ and Craig (with HD800) preferred the EAR. Anax, I-Meme, and I preferred the Yggy. As an aside, I used the EAR DAC with the volume all the way up. The 3 o'clock position on volume with EAR resulted a more tubey slower sound which is not my preference, but I can see this preferred by a lot of other people. I have always liked the EAR / Tim de Paravicini stuff quite a bit. Tubes done right (clarity, dynamics) with a slight touch of tube euphonics - a very consistent house sound.

Because of the specific nature of the HE1000's treble, the EAR DAC's stridency was more difficult. With the HD800, the stridency was more bearable. For me personally, after living with AGD M7, SFD-1, Theta Gen V, Yggy, for quite a while, I could not bear the delta-sigma sound of the digital section of the EAR. That was a showstopper issue for me; but I would highly recommend the EAR to others who would find the delta-sigma sound more bearable.

P.S. Anyone know what's in the EAR? Wolfson?

Also, I have yet to hear anything that would justify $189k (or even tenth of that), from any brand.

All that shit is prohibitively expensive to me regardless. I don't even look at price tags at THE Show. Take retail cost / 100 and I'll build anyone that same shit. It'll be finished with Tung Oil not automotive paint though.

The good:

Hanging out with great company.
The vendors essentially just kicking it with the folk. No hard sell today. You're among the smarter set.
Breakfast, Lunch (at Yi Mei), Dinner (at Noors), and Ice cream (at Cold Stone) with the peeps. Nuff said.

Now the rest in no particular order:
The Schiit stack. Too bad it isn't something I could take home yet. I asked if they could put bobbleheads of Jason and Mike on the new solid state tubes. Jason quickly nixed it.Already making some room for the beef roast or even the MB Gugnir when they drop. Given an approximate date, I can wait.
The Black Widow. Short time listening to it with my HE560s but made me want to listen to more when I have the chance. I do have the Liquid Carbon coming in. Decisions, decisions.
Geek Out V2. Man, running it through the Leckerton almost made me do an autobuy. Well, only if I didn't win the raffle. We'll see.
EC Studio. The EC house sound at its finest. Just a little out of my $$$ range.
Yggdrasil vs EAR Acute DAC. Finally a DAC off between worthy opponents. By and large, I do prefer the Yggdrasil, as it plays more to what I like in a sound sig. Even for a n00b like me, there was a distinct sound difference.
UE ear scanning. I got mine done like half the people there. Thanks for the service. However, already got the uERM, but if it needs reshelling...
LFF's tracks. Why is it I can only listen to the goodness at meets? Why you hate me?!?!

The bad:
HE-1000. I'd expected a bit more oomph and energy from this can. But it's not supposed to sound this limp for $3k. Disappointing.

The ugly:
I talked more than I expected, and missed out on some of the other good stuff (Darin's and Alex' table especially.)
Various things at dinner and at Cold Stone: Hilarity and shamelessness. I'll just say, I did like anime girl.

I thank Casey from LH, Merv and Brooks Berdan for getting everyone in one place, and everyone for making all this fun possible.

Let's do this again soon. You guys are the best.

Hmm.. Schiit Show in August....

Could folks say more about the audio zenith, please?

Has better extension than stock (highs and lows) and better detail than stock, but I listen to the stock with oppo dac/amp this was a rag/yggy combo.  Still feels a little disjointed like its choosing detail or timber but never both at the same time.

Quite neutral tonally. Not as dull or dead sounding as the stock PM-1 or 2. In general more articulate and clear sounding. Smoother than stock PM-2 as well (stock pads + stock PM-2 = good bass and mids, just kinda lifeless, dull, and limp sounding...rolled off treble yet with a weird peak that made them sound rough). I took a pair to the Denver meet and they were well received. A couple folks said they still sounded a bit overdamped, but most made no mention of that.

overdamped

We noted this as well over a brief listen. The only potential drawback in my book.

Fantastic meet!

I haven't had this much FUN in a long time.

Winners for me was the Eddie Current Black Widow and the new Schiit stack which was there.

The best, as always, was hanging out with you guys throughout the day and into the early morning hours.

I'll be posting more pictures soon!

The amazing little Project Ember. This is a great little amp and I was surprised both by the price and sound quality. Just wish it had more volume.
The other amps in the back are the EC Black Widow with an unreleased Cavalli amp up on top. Both were just fantastic.

Great pics!! And the most FUN I've had in a long time.

Re: Project Ember. Volume is very tube dependent. That GE shown is one of the lowest gain tubes I have heard with it. Most Russian 6922 types and the Genelex Gold Lions sometimes have almost too much gain.  Also I think the attenuation module was on so that would have lowered it as well. When set up for the headphone being used it can power almost anything.  Next meet I'd like to set it up for max power output, and see how it handles some power hungry headphones.

Finally made it back home to the Bay. So great to see all you guys and put faces to (screen)names. I'm sad I couldn't make it to dinner, that looked like a blast.

Some quick impressions:
- Yggy vs. Ear: Like what has been said, the Yggy's digital stage is better, the Ear's analog stage is better. When can I give Schiit more money to put an analog stage on my Yggy? The Yggy has more resolution and just has that analog sound from the supermegaburritoTM. The Ear's analog stage was just blacker and more gripping.
- Audio Zenith PM-X: The FR on them is absolutely fantastic. That said, I tend to like the things that we haven't figured out how to measure: resolution and having it give me the feels. These don't resolve as well as a HD800, but I'd say around the same as any other decent ortho, save the HE1000. They don't give me the feels (i.e.: Not as engaging) as the HE-6, but that's from memory, I didn't play them back to back. Overall a really great headphone and given a chance to compare, maybe I'd like them more than the HE-6, but I think the HE-6 is going to stay my favorite ortho.
- HE1K - popcorn Did I mention I'm returning my beta's?
- Black Widow - I love this amp so much I bought myself one. BW+[REDACTED]->Enigmas is going to be my work setup. This amp just is so engaging and resolving. My biggest concern is it's going to be too distracting.
- Schiit BiFrost + Lyr 2 + SS in Tube holes - I didn't take the time to give these a great listen with my known setup, but the resolution is there and it sounded great. The Ether that was plugged in had a decent sound as well. I'd like to put the Ether and the PM-X back to back and see which one I liked better.
- Anax's portable rig: With my JH-16s, it blew away basically everything I've been listening to them with. I need to get some UERMs.
- Meeting and see all of you: really quite great.

Awesome meet! Thanks to Marv and everyone else who helped set up the meet.

I had a blast. Mainly because I was actually able to listen to stuff and socialize rather than just sit at my table and pimp my software.
I was also surprised but happy that the Brooks Berdan folks let me do measurements in both of their uber listening rooms.

And then as if it couldn't get any better, we had awesome Taiwanese food at Pei Wei for lunch and then had the insanely amazing Indian food at Noor's. Thank you @shaizada! That was by far the best Indian food I have ever had.

Yeah, it really is. Buying a first-gen GO is just a silly thing to do at this point. Be patient. I think Casey said they expect to clear the GOv2 order backlog by the end of July, and to start shipping GOv2+ sometime in July.

Of course I'm interested! But of all the audio people I've met here, Ganesh is the only one who thinks of 'phones as much more that something you use if you really can't turn the speakers on.

I doubt that there would be much vendor interest.

But hey... don't let me put you off the idea!

Frankly I'm rather surprised nobody has commented on the Studio and it's pairing with the Vinyl rig and HD800. You guys scared of the price or what? If there's better headphone sound to be had, I haven't heard it. Not to mention the studio was the amp used for the DAC off as well.

It's hard to make a judgment of it, as the music selection was not very familiar to me. The sound was great, of course, but I was more impressed by the setup Marv brought at the last CanJam (was it exactly like the studio? Or something custom like the Levi?).
I think the sound was tuned too bright for my preference. Same with the 4-45 last year.
The M7 + Levi + Anax 3.0 HD-800 was more to my preference, tonally.

I however deeply enjoyed the naturalness of the Vinyl rig vs. any DAC that was plugged to the Studio. Makes me consider getting a TT.

It's a system that must not be named. If I do, I might buy it and die. Cause my wife would kill me.  walk the plank2

But, yes. Frank Sinatra lives again with that system.  headbang

I get the feeling we'll be doing this again soon. These moderate sized meets of 40-50 people are really fun.

Yes. Before August 10th. When I return from whence I came.  :'(

It was the same amp. Not sure if exactly the same output tubes or not, or you just weren't used to the mastering of those tracks.

I don't have much to say compared to what was said before at the previous meet at Wikia, but I consider it The Amp Upon Which All Other Amps Are JudgedTM. Nothing I have used reproduces as much detail as the Studio. It's the reason we could so clearly hear the differences between the Ear and the Yggy. The other amps I tried at that meet all seem to be missing some detail the Studio delivers.

Theta Data III transport at CanJam. I wouldn't say warmer, but better damped, more precise and focused, more refined and analog, more resolving, deeper stage. The Marantz at this meet can get a bit staticky and jumpy in the treble.

This was a Great Meet, true CHANGFest!
The venue: absolutely loved the VIBE of the Brooks-Berdan store. This is the place I would love to visit on a regular basis for a good chat, listening and just getting the atmosphere of a high class audio. No wonder most employees have been working there for well over 20 years! At any other hi-fi store I always feel guilty for spending my time and have to actually push myself to go there when needed while this one felt totally different making me want to come back. Too bad listening rooms I checked IMO need more work and hiring a really good acoustician who would also teach proper loudspeaker/listener positioning tricks would help tremendously.
The gear: many true reference class setups were displayed and it was great to be able and compare them all at once. Darin's very unique Vostok DAC/Amp appears to be a true headphone swiss army knife which combines a very good DSD capable DAC, a very good solid state electrostatic amp and a very good conventional headphone amp all in a portable form factor with motorized volume and remote control. Black Widow sounded very good with my cans out of Gungnir but would have loved to be able and compare it directly with Studio and Rag from the Yggy. Listened to the Studio as well and if immediately apparent amazing naturalness of sound is the famous EC signature then I refuse calling it "signature". The LH geekout V2 is a definite step up from the original and it's too bad they have cancelled my order. Wanted to listen to a new Schiit marvels but their table was always crowded and I didn't want to bother anyone with my own music and cans. Checked out a couple of UE units and had ear impressions made, just in-case. Listened to a couple of LFFs units and completely agree with him on SQ. Compared three HEKs and all sounded quite different with one from Marvey leading the bunch. Listened to Ohhgourami's HE-6s and liked them better then stock from memory.
The people: ladies from UE keep on impressing me every time, just so friendly and polite always smiling making you feel as their best friend. Out of Your Head, who is always helping everyone with either setting up the room or finding a connector and who always finds time for taking awesome pictures (you should definitely charge LFF for that AMAZING portrait ;-). Schiit guys sitting there smiling and looking like they already found a holy grail everyone is searching for ;-). LFF taking such an artful pictures, really curious how that cool looking anime girl came out? Ultrabike listening to headphones backwards and probably on purpose (considering they were of a certain brand ;-) but never hesitating to admit the truth. Marvey who is always willing to tell honest opinion on the sound if you aren't afraid of hearing it. Had a good conversation with Chartwell85 who explained the reasoning for LH marketing tactics but refused to clarify personal attachment to a bit up GO-1000. Anaxilus appeared to be a cool guy from directly across the dinner table but I suppose it was just a proper amount of good food with appropriate beverages provided to us at the right time (not talking about headphones, dacs, amps, loudspeakers etc may also have helped a little ;-).
The dinner: this to me was a great finale of a great day. Shaizada, I can't thank you enough for such a great experience at the "Noor's" Indian restaurant and for keeping us all entertained there. Absolutely amazing quality food and some of the best I have ever had in my life. Top quality ingredients prepared with great confidence and love resulted in total satisfaction (even after a 3hr dinner containing a multitude of different meats, sauces  and beers my stomach felt light like a feather while being full at the same time, amazing and no wonder guys went for large ice creams afterwards). By the way it was only $30 per person with alcohol and tips included but I wouldn't hesitate paying $130 even for a second! At the end I realized why their chef isn't worried about wait times, he seems to simply refuse to sacrifice food quality for faster service and profit! This place absolutely needs more recognition and I strongly recommend everyone living or visiting in LA and their friends to come to this marvel on the regular basis, I certainly would.
I thank all the pirates and everyone else involved for making this such a memorable event.

Yes AZ, I wish you and I could have heard the BW with the Yggy too. I heard the pair at the Wikia meet. Next meet hopefully. If plans all go well. Or perhaps a redacted?  :)p8  Noors was incredible. Best Indian cuisine I have tasted. And yes no after effects. Even room for ice cream. Nice end to a great meet. Thanks to everyone.

One last thought. I felt that the Wadia 581i DAC sound much better than the Chord. Just my 2 cents.   :)p13

Also, D-S Bifrost has a certain grain, more than the Gungnir. Did not hear any such D-S nonsense. The Schiit guys might be playing games though. Maybe they put the new AKM DAC chip in there.

Ooh.  You mean the same chip that's going into the new AK380?  ;)

Yeah. It was actually quite funny.

The girl scanning Ultra's ears said "OMG...they are so big!" and, almost at the same time, the girl scanning mine says "OMG...they are so small!"

It made me laugh.

She also said "OMG... they are so deep!", and had to change the scanning tip... Which is proly why I cannot tolerate most live (rock and stuff) concerts, hear usually considered bassy IEMs more on the neutral side of things, and had above average ear infection issues due to swimming and had to quit even when I loved (and still love) to swim.  :'(

That sucks.

Interestingly, we did talk about if they had noticed any correlations between sizes and hearing/artistic ability. I wasn't too surprised by the answer as I have researched the hell out of this topic but it's still fascinating to verify.

Legends of the trade.

I recognize Craig (Eddie Current) and Mike (Theta and Schiit) who's the other guy?

The sexy and great sounding Eddie Current Black Widow with an unreleased Cavalli Audio amp on top.

this was an awesome shoot out both amps were feed by the gungnir coax from the hilo.  I A/B with my paradox* each had there pluses.  The black widow had more detail, clarity, more bass slam and bigger soundstage. while the cavalli had this great presentation slightly sweet without being syrup.  The mids were to die for the tremble was airy. But both amps were very close to each other.  Honestly it came down to preference more than anything else.

*I first a/b my paradox against SFOcit hd650 (with the mods that "the messiah formerly known as Marvin" recommended I believe) out of the black widow and I perfered the paradox.

the studio vinyl rig was goooooooodddddd.  However for some reason I still preferred the theta>yggy (warmed up 2 days)>levi>codeX but that might have been the tubes? and the music (at canjam I was listening to muddy waters and very few reggae songs can compete with the legend)  tell you what find some Artie shaw's Nightmare and I'll test again.

There's always a surprise at every Changstar meet.

Jason and Moffat were tight lipped... But I strongly suspected something was different on THAT Bifrost... I did hear someone say "ReDACed^2", but no idea what that means.

Lyr 2 now becomes fast, precise, lean, and mean.

this set up with the above two amp set up (black widow & cavalli fallen + gungnir) were eye opening/best of show*.  Yes the higher stuff was better but not as much as you think.  I wanted  to a/b/c the solid lyr/black widow/ cavalli GHOSTWATER out of the [redacted^2] but alas that will have to be left for another meet.

*didn't try the geek v2 setup everyone was raving about I use the time they were listening to the v2+lekerton to listen to the studio, black widow, and liquid glass (there was a line for all)  so that might have changed the above statement.

I too had a great time.  Just the right sized meet.  I spent most my time just chatting with friends and acquaintances and meeting new folks.  So bummed I couldn't join you all for dinner.  Unlike the Newport show, there was no urgency to hear 8 million rooms.  I loved the old beat up tables, totally my speed.  AND I got to hear some world class headphone systems!  By far my favorite was the vinyl on Mike's spectacular HD800s!  I've been suffering from severe digital glare ear disorder lately and that was just a breath of fresh air.  That being said, I think Jason and Mike Moffat have struck gold with that megacomboburrito filter, that just might make it possible for me to enjoy digital again.  And  I think the little Bifrost/Lyr stack they brought could be a game changer - that kind of sound for under 1K?  wow.
Hey Darin,  :)p3 why did you photoshop out my hair in those pics of me?????  I KNOW I haven't gone THAT bald yet!

I would have brought measuring rig, but honestly, just too much for me to do. I don't think anyone cared enough to do comprehensive listening, just informal sessions. Alex (AZ) maybe did.

I believe the consensus is that my latest production pair was the best sounding. All the pairs were production. Schiit's pair had the most difficult treble - I had to do a TP mod on it, and even then the treble still had that splashy steely timbre. Mr. Speakers Ether was actually better balanced than that pair IMO. I believe Ultrabike/Gilberto felt the same way.

Not sure if I heard them pre or post TP, but I didn't think the Schiit pair was that special. Not 3k special. Treble did have issues. Bass was not what I was expecting. Actually preferred the Ether they had to the HFM, with the Lyr/Bifrost stack.

Wouldn't call it comprehensive listening but I did hear all three from my Yggy/Rag combo at different times of the day. Spent  no more than 5 minutes with each and surroundings were quite noisy. I now try to comment only positively on the sound of other headphones. Marv's set was better balanced, especially mids. Schiit's unit was more exciting on the bottom while ohhgourami's (different pads and all) was more Hi-Fi sounding especially up top and actually reminded me of "Ether".

To add to that did anyone that heard the redacted ^2 and is familiar with r2r dacs feel that there was any d-s sound in it?

Not at all. The treble was a bit disjointed in the morning, but calmed down in the afternoon. About three to four hours. Just leave it on. Overall on the warmer sounding side.

None at all. It's really a special type of sound. That said - I only heard it after it had been on a few hours. Damn good sound.

There should be a redacted and a redacted^2.  Pretty sure LFF and I were listening to a redacted^2. I don't think it is going to break the bank. Also agree with LFF about the sound. And I have owned an R2R Dac for some time.
