Title: My first post on Head-fi
Post by: rhythmdevils on April 28, 2012, 08:48:37 PM
http://www.head-fi.org/t/105266/grado-rs-1-detailed-or-shallow

The RS1 was my second headphone, after getting an HD600.  I didn't really know what I was doing with the terms, but it's funny (or maybe sad) how after 7 years nothing's changed.  I just use more flowery language now.   :P :-\

I'm not sure, I just did an advanced search from random curiosity a while ago and laughed when I saw that it's been 7 years since getting into headphones and I'm still bitching about too much treble!  :p

If you click on your profile and "All Posts" it should take you all the way back.

Here is mine: http://www.head-fi.org/t/6532/sony-walkman-enough-power#post_75593 (http://www.head-fi.org/t/6532/sony-walkman-enough-power#post_75593)

It is funny because all of my questions could now be solved in about a 5 minute google search.  Ah the young days of the interwebz.  I actually remember that Sony wanted like $12 to download the manual in pdf.

i don't think i ever made a thread on head-fi, ever. i know i still post there quite frequently. that's bout it. i never had reason to since all the headphone and audio decisions were my own and all i did in the past was study what was suitable for me and after months of searching i came to the conclusion the 240DF's were.

Had been lurking for about 2.5 years by then....

I think my first post qualifies as lamest first post ever (and shortest)!

What forced me to register and post was a group buy on a Meier Audio Porta Corda amp.

Mine could have been deleted or lost in one of the crashes. I don't remember waiting a year before posting my first posts there. Anyway, Ive been into audio and even headphones since way back in the early 90s and looking at my first posts around 2005 asking random people about which headphone is better than what is what lead me to the road of spending money on lots of crap LOL
Title: Re: My first post on Head-fi
Post by: maverickronin on April 30, 2012, 04:07:32 AM
I guess I never explained why I signed up in the first place.

I was looking for a pair of full size headphones because my Shure SE530s, which were as far as I were concerned perfect with music, just didn't have enough forward projection to work properly with movies and some games.  They weren't terribly convenient to use at home either.  I was looking for reviews, stumbled across head-fi, noticed that CanJam '10 was going to be nearby and signed up for both.

The rest is history...

I got my Rio Karma around then IIRC.  It played FLAC and Vorbis.

I wish it still worked.  :'(

I'd put an giant CF card in it if it still did.  Still the best UI I've even seen in DAP after all these years...

@CEE TEE -- More evidence that Grado is the ultimate gateway. I turned so many people onto headphones with my old pair of 225s.

This was my first post in February 2011: http://www.head-fi.org/t/529144/recommendations-thread-i-e-dont-start-a-new-thread-ask-for-advice-here-please-read-op/1575#post_7283565

Nothing insightful, just asking for recommendations. I ended up getting an Ultrasone HFI-580.

My early posts were somewhat sensible I think. Then, later, I became somewhat of an idiot, got my rear-end kicked and started being somewhat sensible again. At least now I understand it's easy to think you know something when you don't know shit.

I remember what got me on H-Fi.  After being a Shure IEM man for 3-4 years and finally having another cable disintegrate I decided to check out the competition.  Hit up CES and heard the ER4 at the Etymotic booth for the first time.  Realized a whole other world existed beyond Shure.  I think it was the year after the HD800 was released, there was still buzz about it on the floor.  I was the Anti-Senn at the time and firmly in the Sony camp w/ my old beater CD2K.  Prior I spent most of my time focused on Car audio w/ Alpine, Pioneer Premier, Polk, Focal, Diamond Audio, Phoenix Gold, MB Quart, Eclipse.

my first post on HF was in january 2007 (after four years of occasional lurking) a comment about entry-level computer audio and USB: http://www.head-fi.org/t/216591/improving-computer-as-source/30#post_2623089 (http://www.head-fi.org/t/216591/improving-computer-as-source/30#post_2623089), and my first thread-start was a question about the history of the DAP: http://www.head-fi.org/t/259360/who-invented-the-dap (http://www.head-fi.org/t/259360/who-invented-the-dap) in november 2007... the reason I found HF (and about half a dozen other audio forums) in the first place was because when I moved to orange county, I reconnected with an old friend and audiophile, and he sent me links to lots of online resources

My first post on HF was "YGPM". You see, I had a plan to get myself an end-all rig with my entry into this hobby. With my limited budget, I bought myself a HD650 and built a millett minimax. The same HD650 still sits on my desk, used daily. I think I did pretty well. :)

I had been lurking since '06 but never found the need to post until '09 when I wanted to sell the 701's to pay for some (gasp) ED9's.  Just browsed through my first couple pages and they were almost all music-related, as Head-Fi used to be a pretty good forum for that kind of stuff (now replaced with SH and others.)

My first real headphone was a Sennheiser HD570 or 575 not sure which.  I thought they were awesome at the time, I have no idea what they sound like now though.  My dad gave them to me.  I mostly used them in the darkroom.  Then years later I got an HD600, then I found head-fi, got an RS1 and my dislike of that headphone brought me to posting that thread.

I had some decent IEMs before I had full-sized headphones as an undergrad. One of the mid-tier Shure models I think? Also some awful BOSE in-ears.

My first pair of full-sized 'audiophile' headphones was the Audio-Technica W1000 Sovereign. Then came the D2000 and K701. Sold them all except for the Denons which I planned to Markl Mod (but never did lol). After a few more pairs of mediocre headphones, I got the Stax SR-404 system and was in heaven.

The rest is history.

How funny it is to go back to my first post on HF! I barely remember what gear I had at the time! In retrospect, I find it an honorable first post: http://www.head-fi.org/t/20557/first-impressions-on-the-prehead-hd600-sound#post_229863 .

Interestingly, Marv's first post totally relates to how I felt of my RS2 at the time, I guess my first post at HF was also the end of the ears bloodshed with grado gear, sharp SS amplification along with a nice sizzle of crappy source gear ...

I joined Head-Fi shortly after drinking the flavor of the month Kool-Aid that was the Panasonic RP-HTF600, so my first post was naturally about them. My introduction to the headphone world was the HD202. I was happy with them. Then I heard my friend's Grado SR125is, and I just had to own a Grado. After that, I started lurking the Head-Fi forums and things steamrolled from there.

No, not "very best," I was busy following that Dsnuts guy. For what it's worth, I do still own my Monoprice 8320 IEMs that he was promoting and they get the job done.

That said, I was tricked by tdockweiler. His favorite Koss Pro DJ 100s was my next purchase after the HTF600. I liked them during the honeymoon period, but I quickly soured on them. They were one of the first headphones to get sold out of my collection to a friend who is still happily using them. I paid $40 for them, I sold them for $40. No net loss there.

My first four were passing on information which I had read about the CMOY and Grados - nothing particularly interesting.

My first thread and fifth post, on the other hand, was entitled "DAC Confusion: Specs Vs Subjective Opinion", in which I asked for people to explain how the Benchmark DAC could be bright with a flat FR and minimal distortion, asssuming that there was some metric I was missing or failing to understand. It's all been downhill from there... ;D

On my first post , I was asking if a Xonar stx, would help to improve the sound  from my hd595. I realized that  after getting the xonar stx, my impressions for the hd595 didn't change much, it's just that I  think they are better for ambient music than any other genre.
I was already trying to "improve" the sound with dsp, and now it's almost hysterical with my very big dsp chain in foobar.

Shame I edited my first post - or maybe not...http://www.head-fi.org/t/375397/sony-ex700-filter-mod/15#post_6786787

My first post was gushing about a filter mod for Sony's EX700 IEM's which mostly makes them boomy and veiled, hence I decided to edit my post to prevent further confusion.  My start on head-fi was kind of troubled in that I spent way too much ($500AUD) on an earphone that is generously described as being an acquired taste and defintely not a good newby earphone, but nobody told me that lol.  From there I spend a while as a budget restricted uni student, and was firmly in the audio skeptic camp as it seemed to suite my budget restrictions and lack of exposure to high end audio.  At this point I am probably firmly in the subjective camp with the exception that I value measurements to make sense of what I am hearing.

Asking about HD570 vs EH2270, both Sennheisers. I ended up with the HD580 for $105 from Newegg! Sold the pair like 8 years later for $150 iirc.

Apparently I had not learned about capital letters, and SMILEYs everywhere!

We're not kumbaya peaceniks here. Compassion is good. Idiot compassion is not. Those afraid of making enemies have no spine*. Troll or flame away as long as you do it in style. But get a sense of things first.

I don't forgive people because only Christ can do that. You can shit on Christ again and again and he will forgive you. Hell, you can even crucify him. I am too flawed to have Christ's power of forgiveness. I can understand though and am perfectly willing to give people a second chance.

If you want back on HF a PM to Amos apologizing and promising to be neutered more "well behaved" should do the trick as long as the beef isn't personal with him.

Hell, that would actually be pretty cool, banning for mediocrity.

A long, verbose whine full of contrition should appeal to Amos sense of arbitrary power and authority.  He's insecure enough to go for it as long as you never question his standards and judgment.  Just don't try to develop a personal connection with him, you'll be wasting your time.  He's already determined your future course of events based on tea leaves and chicken bones.

Oh, and don't presume anything you write over there in plain English will be understood by anyone literate, especially Amos.

reply to Tari Curra banned me. But it should probably be disclosed that after he deleted a message (that Tari called a misuse of the word placebo), I told Curra that I had sent the image to other sites for censorship notice. So if I don't get unbanned for that then I guess...  poo poo poo poo poo

From the little I have seen so far, it's hard to tell with Curra, specially if the force is strong with you. Nothing wrong with offering an apology, but take it easy. I like HF, but obviously there are other things in life more important than HF... like pirates :)p2

Haha, my gateway drug was ye olde Sennheiser HD 497. Lousy headphone by most standards, even then. I've used something far lousier before that, some el-cheapo Technics. Later I have switched to Beyerdynamic DT235 for quite a time.
The first IEM was the usual: Sennheiser CX300, then later, Ultimate Ears super.fi 4. (first BA)

And then it got serious - I've hit Consumer-Fi.

So it's not always Grado. Sometimes it's Sennheiser, especially in Europe.

Oh, I forgot about the first post. It was something about a new IEM after SA6. I didn't get any clear recommendation from that thread and so continued to use SA6 until they broke completely. The next one I think was VSonic GR07, which was right out and fresh before entering the hype machine. (Rightly so, it was good for the price and time.)

(Yeah, the eq was a bit of a bunk, it was way less linear than it suggests, I had a better one made some time later. This was actually the first attempt with Electri-Q.)

Note to self: Never ask for recommendations on Consumer-Fi. Ask pirates instead. Only Joker and Clie-OS seem competent enough recommending something.

Well this was unexpected... My first post on HF wasn't a god damn question.  p:8

Instead of the P"4" the new Samsung M1's are out in Korea for sale. It hasn't been released anywhere else because... they just want their most up to date technology kept to themselves, just like their Anycall and CYON phones from Samsung and LG respectively. The M1 has improved 100fold from the P3, but that can just be my bias. It's much better than the Cowon S9 in my opinion.

And then second post. Of course.

Quote (selected)
I've finally decided to buy a custom molded IEM after saving for months. I'm in the early stages of being an audiophile and have yet to be baptized by the holy music that spills out from each one of these gifts from God.

I listen to Ballad and KPop, but my preference is sad, slow songs. However, I am a Bass addict, although I don't think bass goes along well with ballad.

I currently own Audiotechnica CK10 and I really like it but it isn't comfortable anymore. I tried using triple flangs and I just can't get the right fit. If I laugh, the seal breaks and my sound turns into crap. I've yet to try sony hybrids. Is that worth getting? My right ear hole is slightly larger than my left...

Anywho, back to the JH and UEs.

As of right now, I don't know if I should go for flat/balanced or exaggerated. What do you suggest for the type of songs that I listen to?
I do go out a lot and I appreciate noise isolation because it's usually loud outside and what not; I do hear more bass will help with this problem.

Now, I've read UE Reference Monitors are super flat and accurate and I'm leaning towards those, but I did hear JH 13 Pros were pretty flat too, along with crisp mids/highs. Now I see that there's a new amp JH3A being offered as a bundle with the JH13 Pros, and comes to 1650. Are the amps worth it? I was going to get an amp anyways but not really super high ends. But seeing that the amps themselves are over a thousand bucks, I might as well go for the deal.
Now the soundstage... I don't know much about it, but I do like soundstage. Does the JH3A really improve soundstage for the JH13 Pro? Comparison between UE Refs?
Now, as for the exaggerated bass IEMs, I have the choice between JH 16 Pro and UE 18 Pro. In a comparison thread, the UE 18 Pro didn't score very well as opposed to the JH13 and 16. However, I do "prefer" UE because my favorite band has them (forgive me for my retardedness). Do the UE 18 Pro match my type of genre and noise isolation expectation? But then again, there's the JH 13 Pro with JH3A that would outplay the UE 18 Pros... or am I wrong?

Since JH Audio released JH3As, it would be sensible that UE would launch some type of amp too, right? I could wait until then and get those along with the UE Reference monitors (if you guys suggest getting flat over exaggerated for ballad)

Thank you for your time.

Cliffnotes:

-Flat or bass exaggerated for Ballad?
-JH3A worth getting or minimal difference compared to UE Ref?
-Soundstage of JH3A+JH13Pro vs. UE Reference
-Accurate UE Reference monitor  VS.  JH 13 Pro with JH3A Amp?
-JH 16 Pro vs. UE 18 Pro vs. JH13 Pro+JH3A
-More bass = better noise cancellation?

I don't think I've changed much, have I?  poo

I lurked head-fi for more than a year before that though (i.e. I bought the 440s a year earlier or so based on recommendations and reviews I had read there.).

I will always hold the 440/840/940 in high regards!
The 1840s were a bit of a miss, especially in the pricing department, but I liked them.

I wonder if they will come with a new set of CLOSED headphones soon... hmmm...

Ear impression kits... that's an interesting topic for a whole thread here. Shall we start one? I have a bunch of questions and ideas, since none of the audiologists in Warsaw seem capable of very deep and accurate impressions. (One is capable of very deep, but inaccurate in outer ear, one is capable of very accurate, but not that deep. Two others are making junk.)

I've bumped into this thread a couple of times and have tried a couple of times to find my first post on Head-Fi unsucessfully.  I think there may be issues with the database curfuffle that happened a number of years ago.  As I recall I joined about two days after it started. The post was probably just saying "howdy, I'm here" greeting people who had fled from HeadWize.

Also when I click "show posts" on Head-Fi it limits out at 100 pages of posts and my history only goes back to '09. So no joy with that method.

Anyway, if someone knows how to find your first post I'd be curious.

Sony headphones SUCK!

I appears to me that Sony builds headphones mainly to be efficient so that they sound good with gutless portable crap. Even on there pro side they make a lot of portable pro equipment, so they have to make efficient cans. You can't gain efficiency without giving up the damping needed to get headphones to snap into focus when driven well. In the pro world AKG has been the king forever.

For efficient phones they may be okay, but sorry, they don't have a phone that even comes close to being competative sonically in any price level comparison once you drive them with an amp.

Sorry, Sony could do way better. BTW someone asked why we don't carry Sony. It's because we can't commit to the volumes they want; we do black and white literature and sony requires that there product be advertised in color; and you've got to carry a lot ot different models. I think there are a couple of models that are pretty good and would like to carry them. And I think Sony's done some amazing stuff. But all in all it appears to me that they're out to spend money on ads, not on audio quality.

http://www.head-fi.org/t/556292/m-audio-q40-vs-pro700-mk2-quest-for-the-best-bass/15#post_8167722

I have a Q40 with DT770 velour pads, and I've tried the PRO700 mk2. With the original pads, both headphones share similarities in the overemphasized bass. I didn't like either to be honest. With the velours on the Q40 however, the sound signature becomes more neutral and although the bass is still quite prominent, it became less impactful yet much more detailed (as in layers of bass that goes very deep). It felt like a proper studio monitor. I haven't tried changing the pads of the PRO700 MK2, but their sound is so overly colored that you have to want to specifically listen to their "sound" to enjoy them.
