I agree, a lot of thread worthy topics were discussed in the shoutbox. I would always scroll all the way back to the last thing I'd read and read forward to a me sure I didn't miss anything good. I think it was always meant more as a thread starter/off the wall comments type place rather than a primary location of discussion on the site.
Or maybe it's just a ploy by zdfx to get more people to use the irc channel??? We'll never know... :)p8

Yeah, this is a pretty drastic thing to drop. I'm wondering if Changstar will be reborn as a different site with different underlying tech powering the message board AND, even if the same people are involved, maybe leave behind some of the stigma caused by the HF admins opinions of the board (in the censoring of PMs and posts but also in speaking to vendors). And Marv is a member of the trade now so perhaps he will not be at the helm.
All speculation.
The closing of the shout box has greatly increased posting, though.

I imagine more of a straight-man approach, although still edgy. I get a kick knowing that stiff humorless Germans at Sennheiser erupt into groans and moans whenever the name Changstar is mentioned (which is ironic of course because many here love the HD600/650/800 so much.)

You mean a laptop for server support and content back-ups? How much processing power do you think is needed? How much data do you think you have to handle at the limit? Storage hardware is not too expensive but processing power is a different story.

Simply because I like change. Change prevents things from getting stale. Old habits, patterns, and perceptions are hard to break. Changstar is at an impasse. Sometimes easier to start new with a clean break, taking along lessons learned, than to evolve old.
Changstar had its time and its place and by in large I feel that it's original goals have been accomplished - far exceeding what I had ever expected. The awesome thing is that I can do this because Changstar isn't a golden goose for me.

Ok, to maybe be too serious:
I'm assuming the new site won't be "not that other site" anymore, but is there a way to create something that focuses on moving the hobby forward? Schiit has the kind of best bang for your buck with no needless frills thing going for them. I'm sure Jason and the rest can tell you that it's kept them from doing a bunch of things that a "normal audio" company would do and as a result they are more focused and are one of the more successful audio companies out there.
So maybe it's not a name, but a name sure helps focus.

I'm tending toward anything with merv in it because I love hidden meanings. Now if someone would take the time to do a write-up on why the new site has "Merv" in it, I will immediately register the domain or a similar available domain name.
- What's the story behind Merv? People love good stories.
- How does the story relate to the forum? If you have any ideas shoot.
- I want to go back in time where there was less banter and higher signal/noise ratio on Changstar.
- I like the idea from Tyll about an independent hobbyists society. We are sort of like this but not quite there.
- I want to create standards / templates / qualifiers / process before certain kinds of content can be posted - namely measurements.
- Maintain the edge, but perhaps be a nicer place with less BS and a more formal moderation process. TheGame offered his services and I figure we can keep him a little bit busier. We've intentionally put out a less welcoming front because of server CPU/bandwidth concerns; but any new platform will not have these restrictions.

I vote we follow the AudioQuest measurement standard.
I agree with better aligning ourselves with some standards, and something I have a goal of working towards myself, but I hope we can keep some wiggle room. For example, while I'd be happy to build a somewhat standardized headphone measurement system, I have found my in-ear mic solution to be incredibly informative for at least how I hear things (makes sense, given it's my head and ears). Helps put some context when I write impressions. Would there still be room for that type of crap or no? And/or perhaps include a subforum for dicking around with measurements to separate noise from the standardized, known good stuff? (As a side note, I do want to try my mic on more heads to see what changes it produces...should be interesting.)
Would good to see some knowledge repositories, documentation, instructions, and so on made readily available for new folks, either for just understanding or doing their own, somewhat standardized measurements. What we have currently is scattered all over the place and not always particularly easy to find at that.

Given this site and community's history and reputation, whether certain perceptions are accurate or not, change could be a fresh start and path to have a bigger and more positive impact on the industry and hobby as a whole. And given the common complaints about certain other sites and industry trends regularly discussed here, that may be the desire and goal. Granted, I'm not 100% sure on that or all of the core reasons behind this. Though I do enjoy this place quite a bit as-is and am still wondering if some, most, or all of us would fall back on habits from CS.

I don't have an aversion to change, I actually it embrace it most times. And a new coat of paint would be nice for the site, something that doesn't look like its from the 90s. But I'm not entirely sure that things won't remain mostly the same as far as the content goes, all the same people will be there as are here and the people make the community and decide the tone of the forum...

What about something like Personal Audio? Tyll has used this term and while it might not be sexy I think it's wide coverage (phones and amps but also DAC and IEMs and Bluetooth stuff) and neutrality would work TOWARDS the stated goal of leaving some of the old baggage and reputation behind. The name would make sense to people and they will click the link. We can keep our style of doing things on the board but make people actually want to come check out the site instead of Merv anything- do you really think this place needs any more fodder for people to claim it's a cult of personality around Marv?

I like the idea and hope the new site will keep encouraging the "tell it like it is" transparency towards gear that exists here. This open discussion, combined with measurements is what brings a lot of value to CS. Plus the super awesome people and general discussions as well.

Hopefully the new home will still have measurements archived and provide a similar experience to those of us who mostly lurk around. ;)

Maybe it's just my imagination, but it seems like they put a smaller, non-removable battery in the Note 5. Then they removed the IR blaster and the SD slot. And more or less kept the screen from the Note 4.
But, man, they managed to shave off 5 grams. FIVE WHOLE GRAMS FUCK YA.
If this is reimagined, I don't want to see what their "revolutionary" is.

It's a bigger GS6 with the pen. Disappointing that they went with the double glass design, they should've put a real leather back on it like the LG G4, so it's not just a slightly bigger GS6, which also has a smaller battery than the GS5.

If there's any sort of pop or thud involved, several ciem makers have advised me to disconnect the ciems first. So, there's that.
Regarding the death/rebirth of changstar, I, for one, welcome Marva/purrina. I know it was hard for her to make this transition. You go, girl!

Some say keep em plugged in to avoid shorting the TRS jack. Some say disconnect them first. Depends. Of course, not using a TRS jack at all solves that. ;)

A migration to vBulletin would be awesome. It still pisses me off everyone switched to flashier but less functional and harder to navigate forum software. vBulletin <3.
