Title: Beyerdynamic DT150 250ohm
Post by: Drakkard on April 24, 2014, 01:36:40 PM
One guy discovered them, and I recently had a chance to borrow it.
And you know, they are damn awesome. I dont like 770-880-990 modern line at all, but this thing is totally different.
Very clear, fast and detailed. Possibly one of the best Beyer's out there. I choose this over T1 any day.
Bass can be overwhelming sometimes, but it is so clear, that it does not affect middle at all. This does not sound like a typical closed can. While soundstage in not wide, its not feel restraint also.
Overall I can describe it as "in you face" energetic sound, in a good way.

note: bass distortion is not accurate, it is caused by environment conditions.

Also, earcups are elongated, and so at certain fit can lose seal. I tried to emulate this on measurement stand and got this:

Will have to give this a try, my friend sold his and regretted it a long while back. They are pretty darn huge headphones though.

Wow. That sounds like one rich/thick sounding headphone... while maintaining air and detail. The CSD looks phenomenal.

Rabbit a.k.a. Ian loves this headphone. It was popular in broadcasting.

Wow. The CSD looks phenomenal.

That's because of the used time scale of the CSD  ;)
You don't see the decay of the actual headphone, all you see is the decay of the software filtering.
Still for the lows it isn't that bad. You can still see some resonances of the headphone peeping through the 'filter wall' on the bottom of the plot around 70Hz and 200Hz, the rest is the decay of the software filter.
Also from 500Hz up the dynamic range is just 24dB.
I recommend to set the CSD so the bottom frequency is 500Hz and the total time scale is around 6ms.
Then you can see what the headphone does.

The headphone is used as a monitor and according to Rabbit (long time owner) it isn't a very 'hifi-ish' headphone and needs to be EQ'ed to sound good for listening to music.
Very good for monitoring individual instruments in a studio.

A sturdy 'workhorse' that can be thrown, sat-on, abused, yanked on etc.

Im not sure where in Arta I can set up this options, but Its possibly close enough -

Today results are a bit worse than yesterday, somehow. Meh.
I can increase bottom value, but want to keep in close to Purrin's set-up. Its still clear from 3kHz at -50db.

I haven't heard these, but I concur that the DT250-250 are really awesome. I have some 250-250 drivers put into closed wood shells and I am running them with stock velour pads. They do sound great means fast, balanced and acceptably resolving, in a way similar to my HD600s, yet the bass is more visceral and tighter, the mids not as forward. It is only the highs that the HD600s do better. Anyway, I think these drivers are gorgeous.

I have been using these as my go to closed headphone for a couple of years now and i agree that they are very underrated. Like mentioned before it's built like a tank and what's also nice is is that if you manage to break something every single part can be replaced afaik. Comfort wise the top of your head might be a bit uncomfortable until you get used to it and the pads need some time as well to form to your head/ears. The DT-100 is supposedly the bass-light version but i don't have a problem with the 150, sure it can be a bit bloated and unrefined at times but the mids and highs are very good imo, especially for the price they are going for(atleast here in europe).

I like the dt150 better when used with the dt100 velour pads vs the stock pleather pads

I've used the dt150 for a long time for work, but not for what I'd say are hi fi reasons.

For a working situation,

a) they are really tough and can safely be sat on.
b) sound is reasonable. Bass heavy and a little dull on the top, but great for playback at loud volume if you're playing along and putting another track down. I hate trying to record tracks at mini volume since you lose all sense of 'live'. They play loud without pain.
c) cable comes off so if you break it no problem. Also, you can leave the screw out so it'll pull off under stress.
d) big space for big ears.
e) everything is modular and can be changed.

It's just not waterproof!!! ;)

For music, home listening, I do prefer the dt250 or dt990 tbh. Sometimes the dt770 which the BBC in the UK seem to like. (Cost)

My dt150s are normally quite heavily eq'd for work and hearing them straight, at home was a surprisingly different experience.
