As for ASRC, Benchmark has a FAQ-like white paper @ http://www.benchmarkmedia.com/discuss/feedback/newsletter/2010/05/1/jitter-reduction-using-pll-and-asrc-devices

Then of course there's the properly designed and implemented PLL, jitter's worst enemy.

Great thread (this one, that is). I finally feel like I understand it better myself.

here is a good site with some (IMO accurate) info on it that is quite readable.

http://www.thewelltemperedcomputer.com/

Vincent is leaning a bit to 'the objective side' which may not be everyone's cup of tea... it is mine though.

Things that need to be in order:
power supply
PCB layout
Effective jitter reduction
DAC/upsampling chip(s)
analog filter/output stage

If all these are O.K. the sound will be as well.

One reason why I grabbed a Seasonic X series PSU and Asus P8B WS (almost server) mainboard.
Very stable clocks via USB, esp. USB 3, super clean power supply for those USB DACs.

Also why I supply the Leckerton from a very clean laboratory power supply (because I have one lying about) and actually not use its DAC, instead the SPDIF from a good semi-pro internal soundcard - said soundcard has an almost jitterless SPDIF clock, as measured by my frequency counter - it's slightly (0.0125% @ 48000 Hz) fast though.

Hmmm, so you can speed up the clock?  I wonder if that would make things sound hyper precise but unnatural.
