They sell a $500 HDMI cable?

Actually I think it's more than that. The RJ-45 I2S cable that they sell is $469, the 1.5M HDMI I2S cable is $699.

The AP1 to me has always seemed stupid. You get a pointless LCD screen, a lousy volume control, and a "jitter simulator." Aside from that it's functionally identical to the half priced AP2, which with the PP at around $1,000 is a lot more reasonable.

I'm not buying anything that uses such cheap cables as these!   :gross:

BTW, I am getting the OR5 without the $$$ turboclock upgrades, but the less expensive Hynes regulator for the HDMI output. So we'll see if the Empirical box still does it magic. I know the OR5 we reviewed had the turboclocks, but no Hynes regulator for HDMI.

Hopefully the Turbo Clock upgrade won't make too much of a difference, that way everyone saves 700 bucks.  I'm thinking about getting a Hynes PSU for this unit but I'm not sure if would make a difference..

Agreed. I got mine for free.  :)p13

Hm, yes, Leckerton's USB interface is unfortunately not that great. You do get nice (supposedly) 110 dB SNR (beyond my old equipment's capabilities to measure) via the optical or coax SPDIF and a bit more via analog - but would need a good enough source, which is implausible.

You don't need anything that expensive - a very good asynchronous USB interface costs some $200, e.g. M2Tech's or Musical Fidelity's. There are some stupidly expensive devices out there and what you actually need is two good interface chips plus a very stable clock oscillator and run in asynchronous mode. Optionally an extra buffer or some other means of jitter compensation - not that it should get anywhere near bad even without it.

Granted, that is too close to the price of the amp and could've been averted by the use of a nicer USB chip...

Anax and I discussed this (and his impressions of the OR5) before I finalized the order. Sometimes the super-duper clocks may be too much of a good thing. I will probably take 1/2 of a AMB Sigma22 board I have and make an external PS for it. Fishski may be even able to help. Maybe make a few smaller Sigma11 power supplies.
