The RCA splitter I'm using for analog sucks, have no idea what would happen to SPDIF.  Not to mention the approximate 75ohm impedance spec, though might be less critical w/o BNC and for other reasons.

Is the NAD taking HDMI audio or HDMI I2S?  Two different things entirely.

I think I would try something like this first. For some reason, I could just be paranoid, but I feel like using a splitter with multiple S/Pdif connections would be problematic. This would convert your CDP to optical and avoid all of that.

I might have something like that already in my parts box.  I need to check.  I was trying to avoid that with the thought that it couldn't possibly be good for the SQ considering the trouble I'm going through to take USB to the DAC.   Damn digital is a PITA!

The splitter could end up wrecking the sound quality of BOTH devices. I also have to wonder why you still need the CDP? A good computer setup with the AP+PP should be an EASY win over any mid-fi level transport.

What constitutes a good computer setup in this case?

What constitutes a good computer setup in this case?

An iMac running Amarra or Pure Music and the AP+PP should be extremely capable as a source. The only converters in the same league are the Off-Ramp and possibly the SoTM with the superclock option and the battery supply. Supposedly altogether they are very good, though I've only heard that from one person. That setup playing a CD ripped via XLD should easily beat an average CD player spinning the same disc.

So the suggestions include adding a coax-to-optical device to complement the usb-to-coax device.

Or a vague audio quality issue with a splitter. If the resultant impedance mismatch is bad enough it will be woefully obvious, luckily there's quite a bit of fiddle room which makes such failure unlikely.

I suppose there's always the option of acquiring a digital audio switcher. But before you go too far down the rabbit hole I'd like to reiterate the possibility of getting rid of all ancillary equipment.

I assume the CDP is there mostly as a convenience, in which case the coax to optical solution would seem to solve the problem with little harm. Assuming the computer is taking the "serious" listening role, dumping the AP to go back to what, optical, makes no sense at all. For whatever issues there may be with HDMI, optical is far worse.

The CDP is just a convenience.  Sometimes I just grab a CD spin it.  As long as there is room in my rig area I like the idea of keeping it available.

Thanks for all the ideas.  It all gives me something to think about.  At this point I plan to try a splitter, I've got a couple on the way to try.
