I had a micro meet with Don when I first got mine and Don noticed some digital glare pretty quickly.  I sort of wanted to defend it but heard it too a short while later.

Doing the internal jumper mod will help, it lowers gain which seems to be one of the main problems.  I was actually going to sell my Mytek (put the Invicta in the work system which I like quite a bit more) but now you guys have gone and ruined my resale value.  I guess I can go to CA and sell there.

By the way, did you guys listen with headphones only or with speakers as well?  I found any of its flaws to not be as pronounced on speakers (both my own and the ones at shows.)

Just looked up the jumper mod, looks like if Quest got a newer version its not an option.

Apparently the Mytek uses the same chip and layout as the X-Sabre (ESS9018 4x2). Interesting that they sound so different.

Digital receiver, ASRC or FIFO buffers, power supply(s), analog output stage, and clock, etc. Heck even the three sets regulators we tried with the BUF3 made it sound very different.

Only with speakers. I did tune the speakers with a little bit more brightness at 7.5k, but the FR still has a downward slope. I would say that it took several minutes for the "digital" glare to creep up on me. (It did seem much better after having been plugged in for two days.) Luis was already obviously annoyed from 2 seconds in.

Jeez...you butchered this DAC/Amp. That's good to know as it was in my list of considerations. More and more, the gods of audio seem to me leading me towards the Invicta.

Not to worry, there is a scheduled butchering of the Invicta sometime next week.  The Mytek isn't bad for a work rig (at least one that's not super resolving, and listening at lowish volume) but there are better DACs for a home rig.  I wouldn't go so far as Luis but maybe I just have a higher threshold for pain.

Thanks for the review! I'm glad you're keeping everything in Spreadsheets; it is really much easier to digest.

I'm secretly hoping the next review includes the phrase "made me throw up a little in my mouth."

Couldn't throw up...the brightness pushed it back in.  :vomit:

Some other options aside from the ones you mentioned are the W4S DAC2 and EE Minimax DAC+

2-3k, There's the Burl B2 Bomber and the Forsell MDAC2 which have been mentioned before. I think both are for pro audio though.

FLAC --> Twisted Pear Audio Buffalo III (Sabre ESS9018) DAC, with dedicated trident shunts on VD, AVCC, DVCC and VDD pins (Sabre analog and digital pins), with an NTD1 IV (Pass BI buffer, tuned for current mode DAC's), with an async USB receiver support > 384mhz PCM/I2S & DSD, I2S is routed through Ian's FIFO reclocker, which separates the data from clock, then reclocks to the optimum frequency for the selected I2S/DSD. The FIFO utilizes an Isolator board that isolates out ALL USB/power noise. Further, the clock board is a precision Si570 dynamic crystal that is spun up to 4x the optimum clock frequency to further reduce jitter down to < 3pps. This clock board is powered separately from a dedicated low noise reg, and leveled by a custom ultra low noise, high PSRR LDO. Singled ended output is provided by a Joe Audio high precision Balanced to SE converter. Last upgrade will be a custom battery pack to power the clock board along with custom shunts. --> Custom Made Cavalli Stacker (Tube) or Custom 50watt (85w peak) per channel balanced headphone amp (SS) ---> Custom Paradox with mini-xlr mod with OGC Rogue 8 Strand Cable.

Hmm, you haven't listed caps & other components in the signal path.  Not thorough enough LFF.

W4S is pretty hyped.  Rather mediocre at best tbh.  XSabre is the better DAC between the two easily.  Hell, get a Gungnir even.
