NAD RP18 (Mylar version) (each side with different mod)

No idea what was done. All I know is RD sent them to LFF with a bunch of experiments in place (trial and error and learning from things that didn't work).

This has a very different damping scheme than the Kapton version, so differences between the two shown here should be attributed more to the damping differenes than the driver differences.

One side has driver damping, the other has no damping at all, and is basically a raw driver.  Niether side is modded to what I would consider ideal, this was just one thing I tried.

I would recommend hifiman pleathers with the Mylar version, not velours, though this takes one more difference between the two versions out of the equation.  The damped side was done with pleathers and is the only reason the bass is rolling off.  With the right pad/damping these have flat extended bass.

So LFF took these back and did a few quick tweaks on them. (He worked off RD's original mods and suggestions.) I'd say the results are quite excellent. Nice good solid bass. Laid back in the upper mids. Reminiscent of the HE400, but more even keel in the FR and not as bright in the upper treble.

One can see the tuning/tension of the diaphragm (the thin wall at 4k - it's a trait all orthos have). It's fairly high up (4k is very good and I've found a correlation between transient response / articulation of orthos with this) and consistent between the channels. Impressive given the age of these cans.

I wish I could hear these beauties.

I'm falling in love with orthos all over again.
