I do care about the real loudness wars though - public places where the only prerequisite for the music is that it be loud enough to resurrect Liberace.

The worst is when you have insane loudness combined with the lowest quality PA speakers imaginable, plus a place with bad acoustics. It's just a nightmare of loudness and distortion which only makes it that much worse. I've been to places where even with ~20dB of reduction from my plugs, it's STILL too loud or too distorted to stay. Again I think a massive portion of the population will be in for a rude awakening when at age 50 the audiologist tells them they have the hearing of somebody in their 80s, and they threw it all away while drinking and listening to shitty club music.

And I'm pretty I can't hear anything beyond 14khz, also the loudest thing I heard were the top fuel drag racers (those 5000bhp ones) going at it full during testing.

What's the best setting for measuring headphone levels. "A" or "C" weighting?

Fwiw, I have a cheap SPL metre, rigged with a CD spacer at the end to enclose the cup. When taking measurements, I generally use "C", fast response and use contemporary music that is mixed louder than the rest of my library. I measure around 75dB average in busy passages, with short peaks at 78dB. This is with the Mjolnir pretty much fixed at 9 o'clock, and -9dB volume on the M51. This is my rock out for short burst setting. I usually control volume on the NAD and have that at around -12dB most of the time.

Generally C weighting would be used to measure music.

Thanks for posting this Purrin, it's an important subject.

I've got some V-Moda faders, and have had the etys, both work fine.  But if you're serious about it the custom made ones allow you to use interchangeable filters for different amounts of attenuation. Theoretically they're all flat attenuators so you still have the right tonal balance and your speech intelligibility doesn't go to shit like with regular ear plugs. I have some from ACS, but you can get them through Sensaphonics and Etymotic as well.

In a pinch, I do just what Purrin did, I use toilet paper. One square torn in half then wetted fits just right for me.

I always carry V-Moda faders with me in a pill bottle attached to my keys.
