Aquarius Records in the mission in SF is an awesome record store if youre into that.  Mostly CDs.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that the St. Patrick's Day Parade and Festival is happening on the Saturday (16th) that you're in town -- so keep that in mind. You avoid the area, or join in on the fun.

You should set aside one whole day for walking the city. With a little planning to avoid wasted motion (and weather permitting), you can have a boots-on-the-ground experience of one of the US's great cities, including all-day cross-cultural eating and endless spectacular views. More than once you will notice that your breath has been taken by the beauty of a scene playing out below as you crest another hill. And the city itself, on every level from bookstores to beatniks to billionaires, is just plain interesting. Charming. Stimulating.

Can you tell I like San Francisco? I don't live there (I'm about three hours down the coast, near San Luis Obispo), but I have always wished I did and visited dozens of times. Enjoy.

I've patronized Aquarius since I was a freshman in college, mostly online but in person a few times too. The folks who run the place are super awesome and know a lot about music.

I mostly talk about music there. Weird.

Yep -- I agree. It's hard to explore a city by car, because you only go from station to station and miss the good stuff in between. Which is why I suggested getting a bike and exploring, so you can stop at any shop or location that tickles your fancy.

Best place to rent a bike is the Sports Basement in the Presidio (Crissy Field), as they have low rates compared to the tourist bike rentals you see lined down Embarcadero. Heck, you can even borrow my bike for the weekend if you'd like.

Yeah!  I used to go in there and just ask them to recommend stuff similar to albums i like. Their website is great too. The search engine brings up a lot of interesting stuff since it searches their descriptions and reviews which they write for each album. And while the reviews are a little too positive they are way more concise and useful than the pitchfork type which I cant make it theough the first paragraph.

Apologies for not coming back to this thread this week, work ate me up as usual.  Second, damn, this is all SUPER helpful.  Thank you all.  Questhate, you especially.

So I just read through every post and made a interested/not interested list simultaneously.

To answer that first question: I'm curious/interested in a variety of things, so all that was suggested is of interest to me. The only activity I typically side step is clubbing.  And thankfully no one wasted their breath on that.

So...INTERESTED:

Ground level bike riding through the city
Music events (I'll do research, but appreciate recommendations)
Exploring the mission (probably all of it, sounds like a colorful place)
Auditioning fritz speakers if possible (low priority)
Trying the best of a West Coast burger (In & out or st. johns and grill or other recommendation?
Aquarius records - this place sounds fun

STUFF I ALREADY HAVE PLANNED:

I'm having lunch/or grabbing a beer with t-money, no, he's not a rapper.  He's on headcase and use to live in NYC and we've hung out a few times.  If any of you guys want to join, I'd like that.

STUFF I THOUGHT OF: (warning, this may be extremely stupid)

I would love to see the redwoods.  Now, Rise of the Planet of the Apes would have me believe that once you cross the Golden Gate, you're in beautiful redwood country.  Is this true?!?!  How much time do I need to allocate to this?

I was recommended pork buns/vietnamese sandwiches.  A must try?

STUFF I DON'T WANT TO BUT NOT BECAUSE I'M NOT INTERESTED:

Napa valley, I feel (and google maps tells me) that this will take too much time (sounds like a day trip?)

STUFF I DON'T REALLY WANT TO DO:

Get extremely bored (will sidestep most of SJ), eat offals, visit museums, go to Fry's.

Agree with the "must avoid" list. Particularly Napa, etc is too far away. And Fry's, please avoid like the plague. I've been going to Fry's since the first one opened (the Sunnyvale Fry's is in it's third location now) and I'd only recommend stopping by on your fifteenth or sixteenth trip.

With regard to the redwoods, I think Muir Woods (in Mill Valley, so 30 mins north of the city) would be your best bet. I'd plan as early as possible to avoid the crowds so you can experience the redwoods in tranquility.

I work with a bunch of folks who are hooked into the music industry so I'll ask for a list of what's going down next weekend.

You know, that's not far from the truth!  The population of big redwoods does start pretty much after you get over the bridge and it gets thicker and bigger as you head north.

I'd highly recommend taking some time to see some, it's quite impressive.  As recommended, Muir Woods is a decent representation.

Sounds a like a great trip, enjoy!
