If you are going to say speaker amps are better for headphones than headphone amps, you really need to say which amps you are comparing directly.  General, ambiguous observations don't really offer any value at all.

e.g. I was told V-8s are faster than V-6s.  However, I drove a V-6 (Nissan GTR) and it smoked the V-8 (Chevy Silverado).

See what I mean?

Plus, modifying the FR via damping factor tells us about a sound signature/balance but nothing about the amp's actual ability.  You can achieve the same affect on pretty much any amp.

There are some excellent speaker amps but they are not usually cheap.  Headphone amps by nature must generally cope with exposing all sorts of issues in closer proximity to the listeners ear via a headphone.  Speaker amps can let more stuff slide as 'issues' more noticeable on headphones would be diffused across a room.  This is not a absolute rule, just a general design consideration based on primary goals like power delivery.

Sports cars are not required to have only two doors, you can try four if you like.  Sometimes a five-door wagon is even better than a four door!  However, no doors are the best choice.

Other than that, there are tradeoffs involved. Tossing a huge resistor then listening with low impedance headphones will give you an extra dose of both Johnson-Nyquist (thermal) noise in addition to any tradeoffs made for speakers.

Modern integrated amps take the internal pre-amp output and throw it to an op-amp for the headout.

I'd dispute that. It's come up before in other forums and one member even went to the trouble of emailing various manufacturers, who for the most part replied that their headphone jacks were connected to the power amp through resistors. I currently have two integrateds, a NAD C326BEE and Cambridge C340A which both use that approach.

My bad. Although I'm not sure multiple gain stages (for speakers) and a 68ohm output z at the headphone jack (e.g. the NAD) is anywhere near ideal.

OK now I'm really really curious about this so I want to put together a box for myself.

Keep seeing these lately where the speaker amp (most of them admittedly high end) blows away well regarded headphone amps. Before I entirely commit to a GS-X I want to try it on a couple speaker amps.

Lol, the sound he's describing is the typical transformer coupled SET sound from the McIntosh 225 (like EC and others), not just hooking it up to a speaker amp.  I've had a box here w/ my Sansui.  If you want what he's talking about for the HD800 stop screwing around w/ solid state.  I believe that Mc goes for 3-4K at various degrees of wear and tear for a 30+ year old piece of kit.  The caps in those tend to need replacement as soon as you get it.

Thing is I don't know what he's hearing so I don't know if I want it or not. A little resistor box won't be expensive or difficult to assemble, no harm in making one.

Definitely, go for it!  I'd love to hear your thoughts on it w/ whatever speaker amp you will be using versus the BHA-1.

"The amount of low end retrieval is incredible since I've acquired this amp."

I call BS on that. He's running a Gungnir. I like the Gungir. However, it is not a low level information extractor.

You'll love it if you like adding a little color to your rig.  IMHO, most of these old amps are not completely transparent, by any means.  That said, I love the sound of my SX-950 (Full recap of course Anal!)... but that's just it, it does have a "sound".  And all that headroom does have a magical effect!

If you're after a highly resolving and neutral rig I don't think this is the route to head down.
