That's how you know it's built by a good engineer - most good ones I know are terrible spellers.

You have picked your avatar most judiciously.  That board is barer than a PETA advertisement.

From what I understand the Rendu was designed primarily as a network streamer for S/Pdif, the I2S board and the DAC board are optional add ons.

Jesus does know how to design and build hardware. I don't see the VortexBox server on the site anymore, I wonder if they have discontinued it? Supposedly the Rendu is capable of comparable sound quality.

I'm looking pretty hard at that Rendu. Jesus seems to have a good reputation. The commercial offerings for a network player with a lot of bells and whistles are substantially more $. The Rendu, with the simple approach of ethernet in and S/PDIF out, might be the perfect solution for me.

There are a lot of good posts here that I really appreciate. Thanks!

New set of components from Little Dot I just noticed. Should be priced pretty cheaply, but they look nice this time and the outputs are interesting (AES, I2S, and BNC, but no optical/coaxial). I would wait for reviews first, though, because the first generation of cd player from them was super super sluggish.

This new/soon to be released music file player looks interesting:

I'm straying from the network player Sonore Rendu,  because it needs a PC running to play music.

http://www.sonore.us/index7.html

The Sonore Music Server, with VortexBox Engine, is self sufficient. However, with upgraded power supply, you're looking at about $3250. Supposedly you're better off ripping on your PC with dbpoweramp, so I wouldn't use the drive or DVD capabilities.

The Auraliti L1000 is pretty heavy on the radar right now. I like the idea of no mechanical parts including drive(s) that could pose future problems as well as a separate power supply. The PK100 received pretty decent reviews, so we'll see.

The Rendu just needs some sort of network storage, not necessarily a computer. It can use a NAS without any problem, controls are through your phone.

I thought the L1000 has been around for awhile, and that Bryston based their server on it. The problem with Auraliti is they don't use VortexBox, they use some other flavor of Linux, I'm not entirely sure of what. That means USB compatibility is gonna be iffy. VortexBox has been updated and supports both XMOS and Hiface interfaces which is what most of the USB dacs and converters use.

Sonore also sells the SoTM SMS-1000 server which is $2500 with USB out, or $2700 with USB and coaxial, optical, and AES/EBU digital outputs and runs VortexBox.
