Indeed, it's shocking how poorly so many audiophile speaker manufacturers set up their rooms. Personally, I suspect they didn't mind their setups being bassy (which seems to be the theme at T.H.E SHOW). Massively elevated bass does wonders to girl+guitar or 3xguitars audiophile music. I loved it when so many reps REFUSED to play Anax's test disc. They were afraid. On the other hand, we were very appreciative of those who didn't mind playing Anax's test disc. It was easy to separate the good from the bad this way without even listening.

Agree.

Severely disappointed by MBL and a few other big name speaker manufacturers. They all play music that would sound good on my busted, mono speaker boombox from from 1983.  facepalm

Yeah MBL sound like boom and sizzle at shows. But hey they sometimes have hot girls working the rooms  :)p1

I usually can't even go near MBL demos, every time I've been to a show, the MBL demo was blasting at about 100dB+. That destroys any ability to listen critically, and I won't even go in the room without earplugs, which kind of defeats the whole damn purpose in the first place.

I knew the state of some show rooms are said, but roughly how many of the exhibitors actually treat their rooms?

Using my NADs and cheapee Edifier monitors, I realize that out of all the parameters, I value mid range transparency and a smooth FR the most. Next would be how reactive the speakers are towards the room. Just a question to ask, what do you guys think of Coaxial speakers?

Just a question to ask, what do you guys think of Coaxial speakers?

Positioning a tweeter at the center of a midrange driver seems like a great idea and there are indeed benefits. However, most midranges are cone shaped, causing them to act as waveguides which causes the soundstage to shrink. Classic KEF problem. Thiel and Vienna have gotten around this problem by using custom flat midrange drivers, and Vienna's in particular works very well. Most of the others I'm not really a huge fan of.

I've been in the MBL room when they allowed people to play music they brought with them.  I've noticed that more the more insistent people are accommodated, and they also tend to be on the crazy side of audiophile.  I sat in the MBL room and had to listen to some terribly recorded crap.  I realize it isn't a newsflash, but a good percentage of show attendees are crazy, deluded, and stupid, or some combination of the three.  I think that the percentage might increase for the reviewers......

Most of the time at shows, I am listening to stuff that is way outside my price range.  Even in the badly setup rooms, I can get a feel for what designs I tend to prefer.  Time alignment seems to make a difference (coaxial are time aligned).  So does having the tweeter and midrange in the same phase (Lipinski being an exception, somehow).

If you do go out and audition speakers, bring a test recording with some pink noise, and a channel test.  I have found bi-wired speakers with the lower range wired in opposite polarities, and left and right reversed when demoing at very reputable stores.

Easy way to drive people out of a room... I ask them to play "Ghosts" from my Albert Ayler CD, then I get the sweet spot chair  :&

But seeing how a speaker handles terribly recorded music is a good test to see how they'll adapt.

I found that to be ridiculously true! I always have a couple of tracks with loads of siblance or grain in the voices to tell the harsh equipment from the non harsh ones apart. To those that managed to get a good experience out of the MBL rooms, how do you think they perform?

From the other thread, copying it over here to continue discussion

Yep, although they often bring their big guns to audio shows which isn't the wisest move. The Orpheus and the Ulysses need big spaces to really work well, not moderate sized hotel rooms with crappy acoustics. The DA-RMa or Athena though should fit in most rooms and sound excellent.

Are they fairly neutral-ish? Mainly interested in Orpheus/Ulysses which on the surface look like a good value. Soft dome tweeter especially looks appealing, ie not a face raping Thiel. Who is their supplier of the mid driver?

I need to put a list together of speakers to hear at this year's RMAF.

As close to absolute neutrality, versatile (can go from bestial black metal to audiophile quality jazz and swing then to breakbeat), extension in both directions, all while trying to stay in a lower-middle class budget.
