I've got the Xonar Essence STX. It's pretty much non-functional without the drivers and the available drivers won't cooperate with my OS.

you mean the latest from AsusTek, right?
there might be an updated one that works with newer OSes available at the product support page, ala Creative.

Alternately, the stock CMedia driver might work for the STX. http://www.cmedia.com.tw/en/DownloadCenter_Detail2.aspx -  CMI8788 drivers for most versions of windows. Though unfortunately nothing for linux or mac

^Don't think the stock CM drivers would instally(iirc it had something to do with the pci-express chip used in stx).

Here's an alternative driver package of STX from a third party author -

Hopefully, this would take care of your issues.

I sometimes look at the 'pro-audio' soundcards and midi-boxes. Some of those devices have some nice features...

I'd stay away from the Auzentech cards with Creative's chips in it due to the accompanying driver/app baggage, though they are an improvement over Creative's own cards.

The drivers really aren't that bad. I've had Creative cards before, and the Auzentech drivers seem to be more stripped down (at least on the Bravura). The key is to make sure you do a custom install and leave out Creative's crappy software. If you do that, all it installs is a small control interface for the card.

so simple, yet people often blast Creative for what is easily rectified. headbang

im using a Creative Live Platinum CT4760, and replaced all output capacitors with Nichicon caps, and placed a heatsink on top of the chip for fun xD

i dont now why i replaced them since i mainly use it as a transport to an external dac.

i dont use its driver because windows 7 doesnt support those cards, so i use kx driver for it. i hope kx will release a driver for windows 8 as well.

Sorry, I've been away from the forums for a month, crazy work-life. I have been mainly using the portable Classic-Leckterton set up and an iPad-wireless speaker while I work.

Cans-wise, I've been using my customs 90% of the time and some Shures for gaming for the rest. I'm thinking about dipping back in and checking out some phones rhythmdevils is selling.
