Shure SRH840 Frequency Response and CSD Waterfall Plots

Shure SRH840 Frequency Response and CSD Waterfall Plots.

I know a lot of people like these. They seem to lack some warmth. Some sharp bladed long duration ringing at 5kHz. Usually resonances around 5kHz are benign, they are not horrible here, but notable. The FR balance (no warmth in the upper bass, lower mids) is worse than the ringing. Very antiseptic sounding.

Is it just me or is this one of the cleanest and straightest CSDs here? Sure there are a few minor ridges here and there, and there is a slight low-end emphasis, but it's almost flat all the way through and decay is consistently <1ms all across, in a closed headphone too. Am I missing something here?

Edit: huh apparently the right cup is a bit nastier in terms of ringing, but theoretically a "better matched" pair would be like the left cup on both channels. Also the right cup measurement is even flatter across 500-20000Hz.

Could the residual 'razor of death' be caused by plastic resonance of sorts?

SRH840 is indeed very good. I can't figure out the sharp razor thing. At 5kHz, it's not likely to be audible. It could be an artifact too. It's very unlikely it's an enclosure resonance.

I saw a guy rocking these in the train station yesterday... I was shocked at how large they are.  They seem to fold nicely so might be good for packing into a suitcase, but seem a little on the large side for portable use.

Interesting plots...  did you get a chance to listen to them? :-Z

The 840 sound is nothing fancy. The mids are okay while the bass and highs are so-so. One note-ish :)

I sold my SRH840 after a few months.
Found the clamping force too be on the high side (gave me a headache, not because of the highs).
Would have liked to try them with SRH940 velour pads this may have increased comfort.
a version between the SRH840 and SRH940 I would like to see.
Slightly too much lows on the 840, too little on the 940.
slightly too little highs on the 840 (though you can get used to that), slightly ? too much highs on the 940
The 1440/1840 are closer to the 940.

Agreed.  Wasn't much of a fan but liked it more than the 1440/1840.  Liked my modded M50 better than all three.

Of course I'm not saying they are great, just that the CSDs look close to the "ideal" with regards to flatness and decay. So maybe the "ideal" is not that ideal in the end. Also ofc lots of things like resolution aren't gauge-able from these measures.

Yup. Plots have a very strong correlation with qualities of sound. The correlation is "pretty good" but not 100%. The 840 is a shining (one of the few) example of such an exception. I hear a lot of false detail with these cans, although it is very clean sounding (as the CSD would suggest). The 840 design definitely eliminates a lot of residual junk after the impulse response. But it also eliminates a lot of musical information too.  ;D

As they like to say, let your ears be the judge.
